JT Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital Introduce
For large animal owners, commercial producers, and equine enthusiasts throughout Alabama and the Southeast, access to world-class, specialized veterinary care is absolutely essential. The **JT Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital**, part of the esteemed Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, represents the pinnacle of this care. Located in Auburn, Alabama, this facility is far more than a local veterinary clinic; it is a **nationally and internationally recognized** center providing leading-edge diagnosis and treatment for horses, cattle, goats, sheep, camelids, and other livestock.
This teaching hospital, named in honor of the legendary veterinarian Dr. John Thomas Vaughan, is equipped with some of the most advanced technology available in the nation for large animal medicine. Clients benefit from the combined expertise of **board-certified specialists**, residents (specialists-in-training), and skilled veterinary students, ensuring a team-based, holistic approach to patient health. The hospital's focus areas, including reproduction, surgery, internal medicine, and lameness evaluation, are highly respected in the veterinary world. This high level of specialization makes it an invaluable resource, often serving as a critical referral center for local veterinarians in Alabama when an animal requires a level of advanced intervention beyond standard clinic capabilities.
A key advantage for local users is the hospital’s capacity to handle both routine and severe cases. Whether it's a herd health consultation through their **Ambulatory Services** that come right to your farm, or a life-threatening emergency, the facility is designed for comprehensive care. The hospital features state-of-the-art surgical suites, a fully-functioning Grade A commercial dairy, advanced hospitalization and livestock handling facilities, and even specialized intensive care units, including one for neonates. This infrastructure ensures that even the most critically ill or injured large animals receive the best possible chance for recovery.
However, it is important to note that as an academic and high-level referral center, the hospital operates with different procedures and financial structures than a small, local practice. While one client praised the staff for their amazing care, frequent updates, and success in treating their cow, another review highlights the stringent financial policies, specifically regarding unpaid past balances and the cost of emergency or end-of-life services. The latter account demonstrates that, while the medical care is high-level, owners must be prepared to manage the financial aspects carefully. The hospital explicitly mentions discussing estimates for the cost of care at appointments and accepting insurance for admitted patients, which underscores the importance of clear financial preparation and communication with the billing department. For many producers and owners of valuable animals, the advanced **Critical Care** and **Specialty Services** offered here are worth the cost and procedural requirements, providing the only option for saving a cherished animal.
Appointments are required for non-emergency visits, though the facility is open **24 hours a day, 7 days a week for emergency admission**, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the animals of Alabama.
The address places it within a well-established area of the university’s College of Veterinary Medicine facilities, known for its extensive grounds dedicated to teaching and clinical practice.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1- These guys are amazing. My poor cow got down. I left her with them for a week and they took very good care of her. They called and gave me updates, they even sent me text messages. I highly recommend this vet hospital. It's easy to find, easy to get in and out of. The Dr explained everything to me. August 12 · Francis Herring
- About 3 yrs ago we had our beloved reigning horse put down at our home and then transported to auburn to be cremated. They gave us a projected cost of $250. We got a bill in the mail for $450. I called and disputed the amount. I even called the billing dept and wrote at least a half a dozen times calling to settle the bill they never once reached out to contact me. Today our prized senior horse started going down and became very ill. I called auburn and the refused to see him until the $450 was paid and wanted another $500 plus $600 to humainly put him down and cremate him. I told them that I would pay them the $1100 and would like to discuss the disputed charge of $450. They wouldn’t discuss and refused to see. The horse is in a lot of pain but it’s all about money to them. Don’t let those higher ups and make shift vets fool you. I wouldn’t give them the sweat off my “. “S for letting my horse suffer.
