McKillip Animal Hospital in Chicago, IL, offers several features and highlights that are relevant to local pet owners in Illinois. However, recent customer reviews present a mixed perspective, making it important to consider both the intended offerings and the lived experiences of clients.
- Long History of Service: McKillip Animal Hospital states that it has been "Offering the highest quality care to you and your pet since 1920." This long history in the Chicago community suggests a deep-rooted presence and experience in veterinary medicine.
- Comprehensive Range of Services: The hospital provides a wide spectrum of services, including wellness exams, advanced diagnostics (radiology, ultrasound, on-site lab), various surgical procedures (spays, neuters, soft-tissue), dental care, senior pet care, and even specialized exotic pet care and acupuncture. However, it is crucial to address the serious concerns raised in recent customer reviews. These highlight potential issues that prospective clients should be aware of:
- Concerns about Pet Comfort and Well-being: One review describes a highly negative experience where a pet's tumor area was "roughly" cleaned, leading to bleeding and suffering before euthanasia, directly stating, "they do not care." This points to a significant concern regarding the handling of sensitive cases and pet comfort.
- Lack of Follow-Through and Communication Issues: A major complaint involved the failure to provide paw prints as promised after euthanasia and a perceived cover-up regarding a lost condolence card. This suggests a breakdown in administrative follow-through and communication during an "EXTREMELY sensitive time."
- Questionable Medical Decisions and Pressure: Another review details a situation where a cat's bladder stone treatment involved a catheter insertion that an emergency vet later stated "never should have happened," costing $1400. The client felt "pressured into this" and that the hospital neglected to explain the "fatal and timely" nature of their cat's condition, offering a "solution was something no other vet would have done." This raises serious concerns about the quality of medical advice, professional integrity, and transparency in treatment recommendations.
- Perceived Incompetence: The repeated mentions of "incompetence" in reviews, particularly regarding medical advice and administrative duties, indicate a pattern of dissatisfaction for some clients.
These significant negative experiences suggest that while McKillip Animal Hospital offers a wide array of services, the actual delivery of compassionate care, transparent communication, and sound medical judgment has been called into question by some recent clients.

McKillip Animal Hospital, situated at 2867 N Clark St in Chicago's Lakeview East, offers a range of veterinary services that theoretically could make it a convenient option for local pet owners in Illinois. Its long history of operation since 1920 suggests a deep-rooted presence in the community, and its comprehensive service list, including wellness exams, diagnostics, surgery, dental care, senior pet care, and even specialized exotic pet care and acupuncture, means it can address a wide array of pet health needs. The availability of boarding and grooming services further adds to its potential as a one-stop facility for pet owners.
However, recent customer reviews introduce significant caveats that locals in Illinois should carefully consider. Serious concerns have been raised regarding the quality of compassionate care, particularly in sensitive situations like end-of-life care, with direct accusations of rough handling and a lack of genuine concern for pet comfort. Furthermore, issues with administrative follow-through (e.g., paw prints not delivered) and, more critically, highly questionable medical advice and pressure to undergo unnecessary or even harmful procedures have been reported. These experiences, including a situation where an emergency vet contradicted McKillip's recommended treatment, indicate potential inconsistencies in the professional standards and communication transparency. While the hospital aims to provide comprehensive care with modern technology, the strong negative feedback from multiple recent clients suggests that the actual delivery of services may not always align with their stated mission. Therefore, for locals in Illinois, while McKillip Animal Hospital offers a broad array of services, prospective clients are strongly advised to thoroughly research and potentially seek alternative options that consistently demonstrate high levels of compassionate care, clear communication, and reliable medical judgment, especially for critical or sensitive pet health matters.

McKillip Animal Hospital Reviews
DO NOT TAKE YOUR PETS HERE! THEY DO NOT CARE! I had a very positive experience here in 2019, with a completely different doctor. Dr. Hopkins and the team "cleaned" up my cats tumor area, and they did it so roughly that within 24 hours it began bleeding everywhere- and I had to bring her in to be put to sleep a week later. I don't think she would have suffered had they not rough housed her in the process of "cleaning" the wound and shaving an entire sensitive area and opening it up to infection.NOT ONLY THAT, but after she put her to sleep, I asked for the pawprints and she said "Oh don't worry about it, we'll mail everything to you." I just called after 3 weeks of checking my mail, and they said sorry, we don't have the pawprints, and they asked if I received a card, and I said no, and they said, "Oh, it must have gotten lost in the mail." Nothing has gotten lost in the mail for me ever, so it was a way to cover up their incompetence...So, if you care about your pets comfort and well-being and having an office that follows through with what they say they are going to do in an EXTREMELY sensitive time....I would not go here again, and will take my other cat elsewhere.
Jun 23, 2025 · Kim PatrassoEnded up having a catheter put on my cat, because he had bladder stones, and immediately drove to the emergency vet to have it removed. Emergency vet said this never should have happened. Wasted $1400. I was pressured into this and didn’t know what was going on. Unprofessional care. My cat also needed immediate surgery for the stones, which they neglected to tell me how fatal and timely this was — instead their solution was something no other vet would have done.
Jun 10, 2025 · Luke EmichTook my pet for a routine check up. The vet A. Hopkins had ZERO bedside manner and a complete GOD complex. She was more concerned about upselling me treatments for my pet than actually explaining what my pet was experiencing. She acted like I was wasting her time and really I had just a few basic questions for her based on the $800 dollars of treatment she was upselling. The vet clinic itself is OK but Vet Ashley clearly does not care and that has no sense of dealing with people and their pets
Aug 03, 2024 · JM JM JM JM JM JMTook my dog here about three or four times. Reasons ranged from shots to treatment for a respiratory illness that would not go away. For the respiratory illness, They scripted antibiotics that helped for about a week and then when it came back, instead of offering a PCR test they told me to get a MRI on his nose from their radiology partner for over $2k. I insisted on the PCR and after about 15 minutes of back and forth with the vet she finally agreed “to show me [i was] wrong”. Turns out I was right, and it was indeed a bacterial infection that needed more intense antibiotics. That same vet spoke down to me and did not make me feel heard. The front desk staff is nice, but the vet staff is not, and the place is desperately in need of a power wash and fresh coat of paint. I will not be going back here. There are better, cleaner, more compassionate vets in the area who don’t try to hit you with the most expensive test options before doing the basics. Also, when we switched vets, the new vet made a point to let us know how poor the mckillip records were, which truly isn’t surprising. 2 stars just because it’s easy to get in and out without appointments and the front staff is incredibly kind
Jul 22, 2024 · McKenzie CoryI love this place! It operates like an urgent care without the high prices. I love that it’s walk-in only… I’m always able to get my pet seen. I’ve brought my dog in many times - for routine exams/vaccines and also for medical emergencies. They are thorough, efficient, and kind. Dr. Hopkins gives you her full attention and time to make sure you and your pet have all the info you need. I recommend!
