- I’m late on this. But in January of 2020 my dog had an issue with his back right leg. I took him to my vet and they said it might be a sprain. I knew my dog well and was concerned it was something more. Some days he favored it greatly. Other days he didn’t at all. It came on quick. I had a second vet check and same thing…no significant findings to be concerned of, I was told. I usually take the advice I’m given, but I still felt something was off. And I needed answers. After another week of ups and downs, I knew something more needed to be done. So I brought him to Mill Creek Animal Hospital. At first they assured me my initial vet and the second opinion I received probably bear weight and that it’s likely not an issue. But, without question, they said they would take a closer look, aware I was still concerned he needed a closer look. The doctor was kind and examined my dog, took X-rays, and the care was very affordable. Though he came back with a saddened, yet compassionate look on his face. I knew it before he spoke. The outlook wasn’t great. It was bone cancer. He gave me all of my options and could tell I was immediately struggling with the thought of losing my best friend and wanting to hold on. He gave it to me straight though and gave good reasoning why I need to prepare for the worst instead of prolonging it with surgeries that inevitably wouldn’t fix it, and would only reduce his quality of life. I think he could see the initial phase of grief on my face of trying to reconcile what I knew deep down the most likely scenario, but still hoping something could change it. But he gave me the answers that I needed to be ready for the end. More compassionately, he told me that my dog didn’t seem at all unhappy at the moment and was carefree still. He said that my dog would let me know when he’s ready, but that a decision will be needed sooner than later so that he doesn’t suffer. I let him know I understood and agreed.Fast forward about 6-7 weeks, it was the third or fourth day into COVID lockdown. So much uncertainty all around us. My dog wagged his tail that morning, he gave his happy pant with his tongue sticking out and a look of happiness in his eyes to see me. At the same time, I could see he his body was saying it’s getting to be too much just to go in and out of the house. As happy as he was until the end, he showed me he was ready. As you can imagine, trying to find a place at the height of COVID when you weren’t allowed inside buildings, to be by his side as he crossed the rainbow bridge was extremely difficult. But here is why I recommend Mill creek Animal Hospital: Had I listened to my first and second opinions (which I do not blame by the way), I would have been caught off guard at one of the worst moments in recent history and would not have been afforded any time to grieve. Mill Creek listened to me months prior though, and they gave me the answers I needed to prepare early on. Because of that, I was gifted extra time preparing for the end and give Jackson, my favorite dog I’ve ever had, the best encore of his life. And I am forever grateful for that to this day. April 11 · John Maguire
