Old Dominion Equine Associates provides a comprehensive array of veterinary services specifically tailored to the unique needs of horses. Their offerings are designed to cover all aspects of equine health, from preventive care and performance optimization to advanced diagnostics and emergency interventions. While it is always recommended to confirm specific service availability directly with the clinic, their high-quality services typically include:
Routine Wellness Exams and Vaccinations: Comprehensive annual or semi-annual physicals, customized vaccination programs to protect against common equine diseases (e.g., Eastern and Western Equine Encephalomyelitis, Tetanus, Rabies, West Nile Virus, Equine Influenza, Rhinopneumonitis), and deworming strategies tailored to individual horses or herd needs.
Pre-Purchase Examinations (PPE): Thorough evaluations of a horse's health, soundness, and suitability for its intended use, as expertly performed by veterinarians like Dr. Mayer. These often include extensive physical exams, lameness evaluations, and diagnostic imaging (X-rays) with rapid consultation turnaround.
Lameness Evaluations: In-depth assessment and diagnosis of lameness issues, utilizing various techniques including physical examinations, flexion tests, nerve blocks, and advanced imaging (radiography, ultrasonography) to pinpoint the source of discomfort and develop effective treatment plans.
Diagnostic Imaging: Advanced on-site and mobile diagnostic capabilities, including digital radiography (X-rays) for bone and joint issues, and ultrasonography for soft tissue injuries (tendons, ligaments), crucial for accurate diagnosis and monitoring of recovery.
Dentistry: Routine dental floats, extractions, and advanced dental procedures to ensure optimal oral health, which significantly impacts a horse's digestion, comfort, and performance.
Reproductive Services: Comprehensive breeding services for mares and stallions, including mare reproductive evaluations, breeding soundness exams, artificial insemination, and pregnancy diagnosis.
Ophthalmology: Diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions, ranging from minor irritations to more serious infections or injuries.
Dermatology: Diagnosis and management of various skin conditions, including allergies, infections, and parasitic infestations.
Preventive and Sports Medicine: Tailored programs for athletic horses focusing on optimizing performance, injury prevention, and rehabilitation, including therapies like joint injections and regenerative medicine (e.g., PRP, IRAP).
Emergency and Urgent Care: Providing crucial on-call services for equine emergencies, such as colics, laminitis, wounds, and acute lameness, ensuring timely intervention when every moment counts.
Geriatric Equine Care: Specialized care plans for older horses, addressing age-related conditions like Cushing's disease, arthritis, and dental issues, with a focus on maintaining comfort and quality of life.

Apr 08, 2024 · Kendall ButterworthDr. Mayer recently completed a PPE for the horse I bought and was very professional and knowledgeable. She gave me a quick turnaround on additional x ray consult I requested last minute. She then squeezed in time a day later to take additional x rays my home vet had requested. 10/10 service working with the front office and Dr. Mayer!! I really appreciated the above and beyond service!
Jun 10, 2023 · Maddie MuellerI would absolutely trust any of the vets at this location to diagnose and treat my horses. It’s very rare to find a practice where each vet is just as personable and capable as the others they work with. I have only ever had wonderful experiences (even when the nature of my call wasn’t so wonderful). The practice makes me feel like each of my horses matter and that each one is important to them. The vets are always kind and knowledgeable. The vet techs are always helpful and prepared. The office is always friendly and well organized. They are prompt with answering calls and emails, which really makes the difference during those difficult and scary times. I have had to call emergency/after hours and not once was I made to feel like a burden - they were happy to help. This is a place filled with people that love what they do. I strongly recommend them whether it’s routine maintenance or something critical. Your horse’s best interest will always be first.
