Probst Veterinary Clinic Introduce
For pet owners in Hillsboro, Montgomery County, and the central Illinois region, finding a veterinary practice with a strong history of service, affordability, and commitment to animal welfare is paramount. **Probst Veterinary Clinic** stands as a long-standing fixture in the community, dedicated to providing compassionate, practical, and economical care for small animals. This established local veterinarian is known for its straightforward approach, focusing on the pet's best interest while maintaining reasonable prices that make high-quality care accessible to the average pet-owning family.
The clinic’s reputation is deeply rooted in its long-term relationship with generations of clients. For many families in Hillsboro, taking their pets to Probst Veterinary Clinic has been a tradition spanning decades. Dr. Probst is often praised by long-time clients for his honesty, for being excellent with pets, and for a commitment to not "milk" clients—a significant factor that establishes trust and loyalty in a local veterinary provider. Customers appreciate that the clinic strives to deliver the best care in the most economical way possible.
While some of the facilities may reflect its long history, particularly the famously compact waiting room and exam areas, many clients have historically accepted these constraints in exchange for the excellent value and compassionate care received. The core of the service remains the genuine concern for the animals and the dedication of the professional team. One client's review, reflecting this multi-generational loyalty, stated: "This is where my entire family takes their pets and has for as long as I can remember. Dr Probst is great with my pets and always has the pets best interest at heart. He is straight forward and won't try to milk you like other vets around. His prices are the best around."
However, the practice has experienced shifts over the years, leading to mixed feedback regarding efficiency and comfort. Clients planning a visit should be aware that the clinic operates with an **Appointment required** or **Appointments recommended** policy, but due to the high volume and popularity, especially during peak times like Saturdays, waiting times can sometimes be extended. Prospective clients should contact the office directly to understand their current scheduling practices and availability, particularly if their pet requires extensive diagnostic work or specialty services that may be referred elsewhere.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1- This is where my entire family takes their pets and has for as long as I can remember. Dr Probst is great with my pets and always has the pets best interest at heart. He is straight forward and won't try to milk you like other vets around. His prices are the best around. Had the loss of pets over the many years and Dr Probst always handles them accordingly and is understanding. He truly cares about the animals and clients. May 19 · Rikelle Taylor
- i've been seeing Dr. Probst for over 20 years and with many dogs. For the first 15 you knew what you were getting. An acceptable, though limited, Vet that was more affordable than most. From the treatments to the medications prescribed his prices were significantly less. And, yes, it wasn't the most comfortable Vet's office. A normal sized building but right when you walk through the front door you're greeted with a ridiculously small waiting room. It is about 12'x8' with a row of steel chairs. Meanwhile the reception area is twice as large. It has this huge wrap-around counter that's twice the square feet of the waiting area. Actually resembles a bar. There is an entire room off to the side that's stocked with shelves full of animal feeds that is twice as big as the customer seating area (I can't tell you why), and other areas that I'VE NEVER UNDERSTOOD WHY THEY COULDN'T CONVERT INTO A LARGER MORE COMFORTABLE WAITING ROOM. The exam room itself is not much bigger than a closet. With the Doc, assistant, patient, and patient's mom in this room you can barely move it's so tight. Again, i was always able to "live" with the constraints because of the price. You surely get what you pay for.So for the first 15 years it was the above. Doc Probst was fine but more than once recommended us taking our pet to different Vet's if they needed even the most menial of treatment. Anything that required more than a stethoscope he couldn't provide treatment for. Xray's, forget about it. But, again, I accepted and knew "it is what it is".Then the last 5 years. For whatever reason they decided to start scheduling mass appointments. Go in on a Saturday and you were sitting knee-to-knee with other people and their pets. Just packed and nearly claustrophobic. Sometimes you have to wait an hour in these close uncomfortable conditions. Pets barking/hissing at each other. Just a mess. And the receptionists, and sometimes there are 4 or 5 floating around in that big reception area, do not have very good customer skills. They sit back there and chit-chat about all kinds of different things while taking up space that could be used to make their customers more comfortable, at least, while they wait for way to long to see the Vet. You ask them a question and they get all pretentious with you because they likely took a couple "Animal Care" classes and feel they are the expert. And they come across exactly as I suspect they are, overstaffed hangers-on (perhaps interns, I dunno) with bad attitudes.Since they started this zany mass appointment thing I truly believe Dr. Probst (who used to have integrity and some bit of compassion) has started taking all sorts of shortcuts. Dog went in for an ear infection, Probst couldn't get a good look in the dog's ear (guess he was having back problems and wouldn't move off a stool he was sitting on) so he didn't do any lab work (no swab) and just prescribed a generic ear medication for mites and we found out from our NEW veterinarian that she has a bacterial infection which requires a completely different medication. Not only did Probst charge $80 for a medication, it was the wrong medication. No doubt his new "let's book as many as we can, give 5 minutes exams, tack on some meds whether they need them or not, and get 'em out the door" philosophy. That's too bad because I used to have a lot of trust and respect for Probst Veterinary Clinic.Anyway, the prices now are pretty much in line with the modern day Veterinarian so we've moved on to a modern-day Veterinarian with a comfortable office and friendly staff. Won't look back. August 28 · Daring Lee
- Thank you for taking excellent care of Coco when I brought her in to be put down on 5/31/25. Y'alls compassion was incredible. I can't say how much we appreciated it. May 31 · Mike Bertolis
- They are always great. Never a problem and very reasonable prices for the average Joe. My Gemma Jean got her shots and nails done. December 18 · Chris Schehl
- This clinic is the one you want to visit when your furry friends need a loving touch! If you’re anything like we are in our house; that speaks volumes. Every single paw has been taken care of diligently and with extreme care by the staff… and it’s good to stock up on treats while you’re there! Best of all, they are great for the wallet. This is an important tip… excellent and over the top care at extremely affordable fees. Easy to get an appointment to be seen; with the ease on your budget makes this vet clinic easily a five star place to take your pets! December 03 · Angela Meilink
