Sandhills Veterinary Hospital provides a comprehensive suite of veterinary services, meticulously designed to meet the diverse health needs of your beloved pets throughout their lives. Their commitment to utilizing advanced medical technology and a profoundly compassionate approach ensures that every animal receives the highest standard of care.
Wellness and Preventive Care: These fundamental services are essential for a long and healthy life for your pet. They include thorough annual wellness exams, customized vaccination protocols (including core and non-core vaccines like DA2Pv, Rabies, Bordetella, Influenza, Leptospirosis, and Lyme for dogs, and FVR-CP and Rabies for cats), and effective parasite control programs (heartworm, flea, and tick prevention). They also offer valuable nutritional counseling and advice on lifestyle changes, particularly for aging pets or those with chronic conditions.
Internal Medicine: The practice uses advanced medical technology, including digital X-ray and ultrasound machines, to diagnose and treat patients suffering from a wide range of internal diseases. This includes cardiology (heart), gastroenterology (digestion), infectious diseases, oncology (cancer), urology, pulmonary (lungs), and hematology (blood) issues. When specialized care is needed, they refer to outside specialists, some of whom may come to their office.
Surgical Services: Their state-of-the-art surgical suite is equipped to handle routine surgeries, such as spays and neuters, as well as complex soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries. A thorough physical exam is always conducted prior to all surgical procedures to ensure patient safety.
Dentistry: Sandhills Veterinary Hospital offers full-service dental care, recognizing its importance for overall health. This includes digital dental X-rays, cleanings, and extractions, performed under anesthesia to ensure your pet's comfort and safety.
Lab Services: They maintain an in-house laboratory for immediate test results, including complete blood count, chemistry panels, hematocrit, urinalysis, intestinal parasite checks, and Feline Leukemia/FIV tests. More complex tests are sent to referral laboratories, ensuring accurate and timely diagnoses.
Pharmacy & Nutrition: An in-house pharmacy stocks commonly prescribed medications and medical supplies, allowing for convenient purchases during visits. They only source medications from reputable manufacturers and carry their recommended brands of flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. An online pharmacy is also available for home delivery of products.
Microchipping: To ensure lost pets can be reunited with their families, microchipping services are available.
Grooming: The hospital also offers pet grooming services, contributing to the overall health and well-being of your animal companions.
Emergency and Urgent Care Referrals: While not a 24/7 emergency facility, they promptly provide referrals to specialized emergency hospitals when critical care is needed, as demonstrated by the rapid referral for Lucy Danger's brain tumor symptoms.
Sandhills Veterinary Hospital's unwavering commitment to exceptional pet care is underscored by several key features that deeply resonate with local pet owners in South Carolina:
Profound Empathy and Compassionate End-of-Life Care: This is arguably their most outstanding highlight. Clients consistently praise their incredible support during the most difficult times. The handwritten sympathy card and the truly moving gesture of donating money in a beloved pet's name to a veterinary school after passing speaks volumes about their "commitment to great care and their empathy for those of us that have lost a fur baby." This level of post-loss support goes far beyond typical veterinary services.
Exceptional Doctors and Staff: Dr. Kari Rosmer, Dr. Gavin Beard, and all the technicians consistently receive "5+ stars" from clients. Their "supreme kindness and consideration" are repeatedly mentioned, reflecting a truly caring and dedicated team that treats pets and their families with respect and genuine affection.
Personalized and Attentive Care: Despite being a busy clinic, clients feel that their "fur babies" receive personalized attention, especially when dealing with chronic conditions like "allergies/ear infections." The doctors and staff demonstrate patience and understanding in complex cases.
Referral to Specialists When Needed: The prompt and effective referral to a specialized ER (C vets) for concerning symptoms, as demonstrated with Lucy Danger, highlights their commitment to ensuring pets receive the best possible care, even if it means referring to outside specialists. This ensures no time is wasted in critical situations.
Locally Owned and Family-Oriented: Opened in 2012 and locally owned by Dr. John Thomas and Stephanie Johnston Thomas, Sandhills Veterinary Hospital operates with a true family-run ethos. This brings a personal touch to the practice, as they understand the profound bond pet owners have with their animals because they are pet owners themselves.
Community Involvement: Beyond direct patient care, Sandhills Veterinary Hospital actively supports various community groups, including SQ Rescue, Guardians of the Night, Harvest Hope food bank, and local schools. They also sponsor assistance dogs for PAALS by providing all their medical care at no cost, showcasing their deep commitment to the broader community.

Sandhills Veterinary Hospital Reviews
Just moved to the area and honestly chose them for location. I had only visited Sandhill twice, once to start service and the second time because Lucy Danger seemed uncomfortable. My 5 year old English Bulldog had some weird, worrying symptoms and Sandhill gave me a referral to C vets to get me in ASAP. I ended up going to their ER even before my scheduled appointment, but sad story made short, our fur baby was diagnosed with a brain tumor and was humanely euthanized to stop her suffering. I was very appreciative of the hand written sympathy card I received after her passing, but a week later, I was really floored when I received notice that they had donated money in Lucy Danger's name to a veterinary school. Sometimes it's the little things that define good healthcare. Most competent vet hospitals can draw blood, take ex-rays and perform routine surgical procedures. But Sandhill actually treated Lucy's family AFTER her passing, and it was such a kind and healing gesture. It says so much about their commitment to great care and their empathy for those of us that have lost a fur baby.

They all took such great care of our two fur babies, dealing with chronic allergies/ear infections as well as end of life care. Our family will never forget the supreme kindness and consideration they each showed every single time we needed their services — especially on one of the hardest days of our life, and even after we moved to extend condolences. thank you for taking such good care of our fur babies and our family.
