★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1My family and I had started to notice a dead animal smell in our home. At first, we thought it was a mouse that died in our vents, and after a few days, we realized it was our cat! I called my vet, and I was told to drop my cat off, and the vet would try to squeeze him in inbetween appointments. Several hours later, I received a call from the vet, and she told me that my cat was in so much pain, was hissing and trying to bite when being examined, and she was certain the smell was coming out of his mouth. She said that meant he had some sort of necrotic ulcerations in his digestive system or mouth. Because he is 17, she said she did not want to sedate him to do further testing, and she told me I needed to put him down within 24 hours. She said his abdomen was full of fluid and he was malnourished and emaciated. I rushed to pick up my cat, scheduled at home euthanasia for the next day, and my family and I decided we’d give him the best day of his life. When we got home, my cat hopped out of his carrier to get a snack. He, then, went out to the front porch, ate some catnip from the garden and took a nap. When he came inside, he sat on my lap as I cried, and as I pet him, I noticed something sticky on his tail. Long story short, he had these growths on his tail from which I was certain the smell was coming. I called my vet, and she assured me that was not the case and that the types of growths he has do not smell. I told her I was 100% certain they were causing the smell, but she refused to listen and told me I needed to put him down because of the fluid in his abdomen.I googled pet urgent care clinics, as I wanted a second opinion. Pet Wellness Clinics popped up, and I called the general number. The receptionist I spoke with was so kind, encouraged a second opinion, and she was able to get my cat an appointment at Springmill Pet Wellness Clinic the very next day. I cancelled my cat’s euthanasia appointment, but my family and I still were fairly certain we’d have to put my cat down in the next day or two.The following day, my cat and I arrived at the clinic. What I first noticed was how clean it was and how it didn’t have an odor. Our normal vet building always smells like dogs. The vet techs greeted me and whisked my cat and me to a room. They had me get him out of his carrier and they loved on him as they weighed him and got our story. He didn’t hiss at them or try to bite. When they informed me they would be taking him to the back for the exam, I showed them how he likes to be carried (like a football with legs dangling), and they did just that.Ten minutes later, Dr. Dechand came in. I was expecting the worst, but he said that the growths on my cat’s tail were causing the smell, that it often happens with these types of growths when the hair gets matted on top, and that he shaved my cats tail so the growths could dry up. He, also, said he could give my cat an antibiotic shot to help clear up the infection since one of the growths was oozing. I asked about fluid in my cat’s abdomen, and he said there was none. I mentioned that I was told my cat was malnourished and emaciated, and he told me that my cat weights 12lbs. and is far from emaciated and that he is just an old cat. I asked about quality of life, and he said as long as my cat is eating, drinking, using his litter box and behaving normally, he’s fine. The techs brought my cat back, and they said he did great, and so we headed home.Within HOURS, the dead animal smell went away. And over the past 3 weeks, my cat’s infected growth has scabbed over. He is perfectly fine. He eats, drinks, goes on old cat adventures, jumps on couches, beds and countertops, and begs for pets.Dr. Dechand and his team saved him, as I would have put him down had I not received a second opinion. I am so grateful for everyone at Springmill Pet Wellness Clinic. I know my old cat won’t last a lot longer, but I’m going to keep him around until he’s no longer enjoying his life. And, I will definitely be making Springmill my cat’s vet going forward.
August 06 · Maggie L.Two members of my family have taken their pets to this clinic, and both had concerning experiences. The focus seemed more on selling memberships and collecting fees than on providing quality veterinary care. When adverse reactions and legitimate health concerns were raised, they were dismissed rather than addressed. The lack of compassion and prioritization of profit over pet well-being is unacceptable, and I cannot recommend this clinic. I will never be willing to take my cat or any other future pets here.
August 21 · gabi dukeHands down the best experience I have had at a vet. I don't go often but I showed up 10 minutes early and was out of there with a treated cat in 25 minutes! Staff was super friendly and loving toward all the pets!
August 17 · Chet StanleyBeware of Jim Dechand. DO NOT COME HERE IF HE IS YOUR ASSIGNED VET. Super unprofessional vet who does not care to explain his thoughts or findings with you. He rushes you in and out of the room. Unless you ask specific questions, he does not provide you with anything. My dog had an unknown injury where he had pain jumping up on furniture and would cry from pain when jumping up with his front leg(s)… Jim basically said here is some dog ibuprofen 2x a day for 5 days and have him rest. Didn’t specify what he thought was going on and generally seemed to not care. I was in the consult room for less than 10mins and Jim spent less than 2 minutes in the room. He felt annd evaluated only one of my dog’s arms very briefly and wasn’t going to check the other arm until I asked. I said hey what about his left arm , he said oh I thought he was limping a bit on the right his left seemed fine. Didn’t communicate anything. But there is so many muscles, bones, joins, connective parts of their body that he didn’t care to look at or evaluate. I have since taken my dog to a new vet elsewhere where he has had a full body evaluation where they checked his arms, legs, joints, elbows, spine, neck and all the areas that bend flex and could be injured. The new vet was extremely thorough and was able to identify the area where he likely has a pinched and pulled muscle. Jim prescribed Carprofen 10 tablets which cost me $37. My new vet gave me a full 28 pill bottle of the SAME medication and SAME dose and it cost $31. So not only is the care here inferior but they are literally ripping off their customers with medicine prices. Lastly, I had asked him to check my dog’s ear as I though there might be an infection, he had been itching it and there was a slight smell. He looked and said perfectly fine. The new vet identified a bit of build up and redness in the right ear only and was able to prescribe the proper antibiotics to treat him. I’m EXTREMELY disappointed and dissatisfied with the care my pet received from Dr Jim Dechand and will not ever be returning here. Future customers beware, they underperform, rush you in and out, miss things in their evaluation, and over charge their patients. BEWARE.
August 30 · Alexander BuckleyI don’t usually leave negative reviews, but I feel it’s important to share my experience so other pet parents know what to expect. This clinic pressure sold me a membership, dismissed my account of my puppy's adverse reaction to meds, and refused to provide a safer alternative. Now they're demanding $400 to cancel the membership.Steer clear! At my very first visit, I was signed up for a monthly membership—even after I explained I might be relocating soon. That already felt more like a sales pitch than genuine care. The real problem came with the medication included in the plan. I was given Simparica Trio for my 5 lb. toy poodle. I understand that most dogs do not react to this medication, but I specifically waited 1–2 months to give it to her because I had researched potential side effects and knew other poodle owners whose dogs had reacted badly. Unfortunately, when I finally tried it, my worries came true. Within 1–2 hours of her very first dose, she developed severe diarrhea that lasted 5–6 days. She had never had diarrhea before in her life—not even puppy stools—and suddenly she was waking up 3–4 times a night in pain needing to go outside. When I reported this, the vet dismissed it, suggesting it was “just puppy stools” or that she had eaten something. That doesn’t explain five straight days of nighttime pain and diarrhea. I even paid $104 for a fecal exam to prove it wasn’t a parasite. When the results came back negative, I knew it had to be the Simparica Trio—nothing else had been introduced into her system. The clinic’s reasoning was that because her reaction lasted longer than 1–2 days, they didn’t believe it was from the medication. To me, that logic is unreasonable—people with sensitive stomachs or medication reactions can have symptoms that last much longer, so why wouldn’t the same be possible for a small dog?On top of this, I was told I either had to keep giving her the medication that made her sick or pay $400 to cancel my membership in order to access a safer alternative. So to be clear:• A prescribed medication made my dog very sick.• I paid for testing that ruled out other causes.• The vet still dismissed the symptoms and refused to consider the medication.• I was denied access to a safer alternative under my plan.• I was told I must pay $400 to cancel a membership that is now unsafe for my pet. This feels exploitative, dismissive, and not in the best interest of my dog’s health. I hope the clinic reconsiders its policies and takes adverse reactions more seriously.
