Veterinary Oncology Services Introduce
Receiving a cancer diagnosis for your beloved dog or cat can be a devastating and overwhelming experience. The emotional toll is immense, and the need to find the best possible care becomes an immediate and pressing priority. Unlike general practice veterinarians, a veterinary oncologist specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of animal cancer, providing a level of expertise and access to advanced therapies that can make a world of difference in your pet's prognosis and quality of life. For pet owners in New York City, finding a trusted and specialized clinic is the first and most critical step.
This article is a comprehensive overview of Veterinary Oncology Services, a premier specialty clinic located in Long Island City, Queens. This practice is dedicated exclusively to the treatment of animal cancer, offering a beacon of hope for families facing a difficult diagnosis. The clinic is well-known for its team of experts who provide compassionate and knowledgeable care, focusing on modern treatment plans that prioritize both the pet's longevity and their overall well-being. By specializing in this complex field, they can offer a depth of knowledge and a range of options that are often unavailable at general veterinary hospitals.
The core of this practice is its leader, Dr. Joseph Impellizeri, a board-certified veterinary oncologist. Dr. Impellizeri is a distinguished graduate of Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine and a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Oncology). He is a pioneering figure in the field, credited with being among the first to document and treat feline hyperthyroidism with radioiodine. His expertise extends to advanced cancer therapies, including targeted electrochemotherapy and gene-electro-transfer, for which he is a recognized international lecturer and author. His passion for improving patient outcomes is evident in his active pursuit of better treatment options. This level of expertise and a focus on cutting-edge research and treatment is what sets Veterinary Oncology Services apart.
The experiences of clients speak to the high level of care and compassion provided by the clinic. One owner of a three-year-old dog named Serena, diagnosed with a grade 3 mammary carcinoma, was in a state of panic when other clinics were fully booked for weeks. They were "extremely grateful" to find an appointment at Veterinary Oncology Services within just a few days. During the consultation, they were impressed by Dr. Impellizeri and his team's clear and patient explanation of the diagnosis and treatment plan, which also included transparent pricing. The owner was particularly touched to see how their anxious dog grew to be "calm and at ease" with the gentle staff. Another client, who brought their Rottweiler, Titan, for melanoma treatment, spoke of feeling immediate "warmth and care" from Dr. Impellizeri and his nurse, Beth. They noted that these advanced treatments were helping their dog fight the disease while "our dog has been his happy, playful, healthy self." These testimonials underscore the clinic’s dual commitment to medical excellence and to maintaining the pet's quality of life during a difficult time.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1My 3 year old dog, Serena, got diagnose with grade 3 mammary carcinoma in September 2024. Panicked by the news, I reached out to every oncologist within the Tri-state area. All the clinics were fully booked and didn't have openings for many weeks ahead. I was so devastated and didn't know what to do until I found veterinary oncology services. I was able to book an appointment within the next few days of me calling! For that alone, I was extremely grateful. During the consultation Dr.Impellizeri and Elisa were both very clear and patient in explaining Serena's diagnosis. They answered all my questions and had a clear medical plan with pricing so my partner and I knew what the financial overview would be for the treatment.Serena is a very anxious dog and often gets scared during vet visits. Within the 5th month of taking her to get treatment we were surprised to see how calm and at ease Serena was. We can see how patient all the staff was with her and how gentle they were with her care. Serena has finished her treatment plan and we are so thankful to have gotten good news. We are forever grateful for everyone on the team!! The work you all do is truly invaluable, thank you!
March 25 · Nadia CampoverdeI have had the most wonderful experience at Veterinary Oncology Services. From the moment I met Dr. Impellizeri and his nurse Beth, I felt the warmth and care and knew my beautiful handsome Rottweiler Titan would be in the best of care. These advanced treatments have been helping Titan fight melanoma and the best part is, our dog has been his happy, playful, healthy self. The staff has all been so loving to Titan and makes us feel that every single visit. Everyone should have this available to help their fur babies stay with us as long as they can. ❤️🐾Thank you again, and our family will be forever grateful for your support, love, and care for Titan.
August 12 · Celeste ShapiroWe were absolutely heartbroken and devastated when our dog Venice was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and were told on average, we would have less than a year, even with amputation and chemo. I immediately started searching for someone who could offer us more, and Dr Impellizeri gave us hope.We are so happy with the care our dog Venice has received from Dr. Impellizeri over the past few months. From the very beginning, he has always taken the time to thoroughly explain every step and option in her treatment plan, along with the reasoning behind his recommendations. That kind of communication and transparency has made such a difference in how confident and supported we’ve felt throughout this process. After discussing all the options, we chose to move forward with the HER2 vaccine, telomerase immunotherapy, and Gilvetmab, along with targeted electrochemotherapy (ECT) for local control. We made this decision because we truly believe Dr. I is one of the best in the field, and he gave us hope—not just for more time with our girl, but for more quality time. His approach offered a path beyond the standard route of amputation and chemo alone, and we’re incredibly grateful for that.Beth has also been absolutely wonderful—so responsive and always willing to take the time to check in and ease any anxieties we’ve had along the way. Her support means a lot. Cali at the front desk and the other staff in the back are consistently friendly and professional—they always come out to greet Venice with a smile and a gentle touch, which she loves. We truly feel like we’re in the best hands with Dr. Impellizeri and his team.
August 06 · Nikki TorrettaOur ~10 year old morkie, Brody, was diagnosed with thyroid carcinoma in January 2021. His tumor was removed by his primary vet and we were then referred to Dr. Impellizeri who got us in almost immediately the following month to begin his chemotherapy treatment. Brody was treated with 6 rounds of chemotherapy and continues on maintenance medication under Dr. I's care.Dr. I could not have been more thorough in explaining Brody's diagnosis, treatment options, and what the treatment process would look like. Chief Nurse Elisa continues to be in regular contact with us and continues to coordinate Brody's care across all of his medical professionals at practices outside of Oncology Vet. The Oncology Vet team goes beyond the scope of oncology and even supported us through referring Brody to an internal medicine professional for suspicions of Cushing's Disease which he has since been diagnosed with.We have traveled near and far to continue Brody's care under the Oncology Vet team and he continues to thrive in remission at now 14 years old. We would not have Brody with us and in his current health without the help of Dr. Impellizeri and Chief Nurse Elisa. From treating his cancer, to suspecting and helping us get the right care for his Cushing's Disease, as well as always being available for medical care coordination, their care for Brody is truly more than we could have ever imagined when we began this process. Their attention to detail, thoroughness towards Brody's care, and overall compassion continue to surpass any medical support I have experienced thus far in the human world of medicine. They truly understand that Brody is far more to us than just a pet, he is our everything. We are eternally grateful for everything Dr. I and Elisa have done and continue to do for Brody. We can't wait to see them for his next follow up in June 2025. Below is a photo of Brody at his last check up with the team in Summer of 2023 for reference of how cute he is and how happy he was for his appointment!
May 22 · Alyssa LobertiI’m writing this review for oncology services administered to my puppy Wolfgang.Veterinary Oncology Services of Long Island City are amazing!!! Dr. Impellizeri, Beth, Callie and the other team members go above and beyond not just taking care of your fur baby but they make you feel like family. I just felt like everything was going to be OK after leaving his office. My mom and I felt they were not in this profession for the money, but for the true love of animals. Dr. Impellizeri puts the fur babies needs and feelings first, and it shows! We cannot begin to say how wonderful, patient, kind, professional, and caring Dr. Impellizeri and his team are. I know my fur baby is in good hands. I am so grateful to God for his care and expertise. I would recommend his services to anyone!!
