---Jan's Tropical Fish primarily serves as a retail outlet for aquatic pets and related supplies. Based on general operations of similar specialized pet stores and available customer insights, their services and offerings typically include:
Live Fish Sales: The core offering includes a variety of tropical and freshwater fish species for purchase. Customers can expect to find common as well as some more expensive and exotic varieties, catering to different levels of interest and experience in the hobby.
Aquatic Plants: To help create natural and thriving environments within tanks, Jan's Tropical Fish provides a selection of live aquatic plants. These are crucial for tank aesthetics, water quality, and providing hiding places for fish.
Aquarium Supplies: They stock essential equipment for setting up and maintaining fish tanks. This typically includes filters, heaters, lighting systems, air pumps, and various types of substrate (gravel, sand).
Tank Decorations and Hardscape: Customers can find a range of decorative items, such as driftwood pieces, rocks, ornaments, and artificial plants, to enhance the visual appeal and provide environmental enrichment for their fish.
Fish Food and Treatments: A selection of fish foods catering to different dietary needs and species, as well as water conditioners and treatments for common fish ailments, are typically available.
Basic Aquatic Advice: Like most specialized pet stores, staff may offer general advice on fish compatibility, tank cycling, and basic care. However, the depth of this service can vary.
Based on the provided information, Jan's Tropical Fish presents several points that customers might consider when evaluating their experience, reflecting both the intended offerings and areas noted for improvement.
Variety of Species: A notable feature is the store's reported variety, carrying "an expensive variety of tropical and fresh fish species." This suggests a commitment to offering a broad selection, potentially including unique or harder-to-find fish for dedicated hobbyists. This can be a significant draw for those looking to expand beyond common species.
Long-Standing Presence: The review indicating customers have been "going here for years" suggests a long-standing presence in the community. This longevity often implies a certain level of familiarity and trust built over time with returning customers. For some, supporting a long-established local business is a positive in itself.
Availability of Hardscape and Plants: The explicit mention of driftwood pieces and plants as part of a purchase indicates that the store provides key elements for aquascaping, allowing customers to fully design and furnish their tanks. This comprehensive offering of live inhabitants and decor is convenient for setting up a new aquarium or refreshing an existing one.
Areas for Potential Improvement: Customer feedback highlights critical areas that, if addressed, could significantly enhance the store's appeal. These include concerns about:
Customer Service and Communication: Reports of staff cutting off customers and a refusal to acknowledge potential issues or offer satisfactory resolutions (e.g., refunds or replacements for deceased fish) point to a need for improved customer interaction and conflict resolution.
Store Environment and Maintenance: Observations regarding a "smell like there were filtration problems," dead fish on the floor, and dead shrimp in tanks suggest potential issues with overall store cleanliness, tank hygiene, and animal welfare.
Accessibility and Organization: The difficulty navigating aisles due to "obstacles like step ladders and buckets" indicates a need for better organization and accessibility, especially for customers with mobility aids.

Jan's Tropical Fish Reviews
Been going here for years. Never had a problem till the other day. Me and my fiance purchased 12 fish, 5 shrimp, a couple of driftwood pieces, and plants. Spent $220 for everything. Had our tank all set up for 2 days fully filtered at home . Everything was fine til the next morning. Every single fish was dead. Never have we had that many fish die on us. We called and they told us to bring a sample of the tank water, we did and nothing was wrong with it. As ne and my fiance were trying to discuss with the main guy our situation and what could we do to move forward he kept cutting us off not wanting to hear anything that wasn't from his own mouth. Told us he lost 5 fish of his own fish as well because he rushed and put the fish in the tank too early (he seen it as his mistake was our same mistake, when it wasn't). When trying to tell him we had this tank filtered for 2 days he just wouldn't listen. He refused our refund and he refused to replace the fish.He was only willing to give us a discount on our next purchase. Even petsmart has a refund policy for fish. This place is very unprofessional and ripped us off $180 dollars worth of fish. Very unhappy with how they treat their loyal costumers.
Mar 19, 2025 · Natasha CantuI wish I could rave about this store, but something has changed since we last visited. Although they carry an expensive variety of tropical and fresh fish species, the store itself smelled like there were filtration problems throughout the store, and my daughter even stepped on a small long fish that was already laying dead on the floor. Most of their colorful shrimp varieties were dead in the tanks. I would still shop here if things improved. Oh, and navigating the aisles is almost impossible for me sometimes as I use a walker and there are always obstacles like step ladders and buckets in each aisle preventing me from viewing the fish. Needs improvement!

Mar 26, 2025 · Laura CassityThe fish place to go! The plants don’t have snails (unlike other places I’ve been locally…), they have knowledgeable good advice on what fish to get and how to care for them. Also so convenient to just buy a jug and get 5gallons of clean water for my fish!
