This address places it firmly within the bustling Astoria neighborhood of Queens, a highly residential and well-connected area of New York City. 31st Street is a significant thoroughfare, making the clinic easily reachable by various modes of transport. For New Yorkers relying on public transportation, the N and W subway lines, with stations along 31st Street, provide convenient access. Additionally, numerous local bus routes serve the area, ensuring that pet owners from across Astoria and neighboring parts of Queens can reach the clinic without significant travel challenges. While street parking can sometimes be a consideration in NYC, the central location likely offers proximity for many local residents, enabling them to walk their pets to the facility during urgent situations. This ease of access is crucial when every minute counts in a pet emergency.
24/7 Emergency and Urgent Care: A primary and crucial service offered by Astoria Animal Emergency is their round-the-clock availability. They are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. This is invaluable for pet owners whose regular veterinary clinics are closed, providing immediate attention for sudden illnesses, injuries, and other urgent health concerns that cannot wait for a scheduled appointment.
Walk-in Appointments Welcome: The clinic operates with a walk-in policy, meaning appointments are not always required for urgent care. This flexibility is a significant benefit for unexpected emergencies, ensuring that pets can be seen promptly without the delay of scheduling. While calling ahead is often recommended to help the staff prepare, the ability to simply walk in is a testament to their commitment to immediate care.
Thorough Examinations and Diagnostics: As highlighted by customer reviews, the veterinarians, particularly Dr. Bukhanova, are known for their "very thorough" exams and explanations. This includes comprehensive assessments of symptoms, such as investigating chronic issues like diarrhea, to get to the bottom of the problem. They are equipped to perform necessary diagnostic tests to accurately determine the cause of illness or injury.
Treatment for Injuries and Infections: The clinic is adept at handling various traumatic injuries and infections. Reviews mention them expertly dealing with an "ear laceration/painful infection," demonstrating their capability in managing acute and painful conditions.
Transparency in Costs: A highly appreciated service feature is their transparency regarding costs. They provide clear explanations of potential expenses and "will ask for your consent before performing tests/procedures." This ensures pet owners are informed and can make decisions without unexpected financial burdens during stressful times.
Compassionate and Gentle Care: The staff and veterinarians, particularly Dr. Bukhanova, are consistently described as "gentle and calm." This approach is vital when dealing with pets in pain or distress, helping to minimize anxiety for the animal and facilitate necessary medical procedures, even for typically uncooperative pets.
Management of Acute Symptoms: They are prepared to address a wide range of acute symptoms such as severe pain, bleeding, and gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea and vomiting, providing immediate interventions to stabilize pets and alleviate discomfort.
24/7 Availability and Walk-in Access: This is arguably the most significant feature of Astoria Animal Emergency. In a city like New York, having a veterinary facility that is open "24/7" and accepts "walk-ins" is an immense relief for pet owners facing unexpected medical situations. This round-the-clock service ensures that help is always available, a critical factor for true emergencies.
Exceptional Veterinary Expertise (Dr. Bukhanova): Dr. Bukhanova is consistently highlighted in customer reviews for her professionalism, thoroughness, and compassionate approach. Her ability to handle challenging cases, such as a cat with a painful ear laceration and chronic diarrhea, with calmness and dedication, demonstrates a high level of medical skill and genuine care. The trust and praise she garners from clients underscore the quality of care provided.
Professional and Responsive Staff: Beyond the veterinarians, the support staff are noted for being "friendly and responsive." This contributes to a positive overall experience, especially when pet owners are under stress. Their ability to manage walk-ins efficiently and ensure timely care is also a key highlight.
Commitment to Transparency: The clinic's policy of being "very transparent about costs" and seeking "consent before performing tests/procedures" is a highly valued feature. This fosters trust and allows pet owners to make informed decisions about their pet's care without financial surprises.
Calm and Gentle Approach: The reviews emphasize the staff’s "gentle and calm" demeanor. This is particularly beneficial for pets who are anxious or in pain, as it helps to de-escalate stressful situations and allows for more effective treatment.
Focus on Emergency and Urgent Care: While they don't provide vaccines (meaning they can't be a pet's sole vet), their specialization in emergency and urgent care means they are highly prepared and optimized for these critical situations. This focus allows them to excel in providing immediate, life-saving, or pain-relieving interventions.

Astoria Animal Emergency Reviews
Dr. Bukhanova and staff were gentle and calm and able to do things to my cat Mooshmoosh that I never though she would tolerate! They dealt with an ear lasceration/painful infection and didn't bat an eye when Mooshmoosh shook blood all over them. They gave me plenty of time for answering questions and then the Dr. wanted to know all about the (cat's) diarrhea I'd mentioened to get to the bottom of it. They really care about animals there. Too bad they don't give vaccines, which means they can't be your only veterinarian.
May 26, 2020 · Eva NavonI brought my kitten in for two visits last week and was highly impressed with the professionalism of this clinic- they take walk-one and are open 24/7. I was seen in a timely manner and the vet Dr. Bakhanova was very through in her exam and explanations, the staff was friendly and responsive. They were also very transparent about costs and will ask for your consent before performing tests/procedures. I highly recommend bringing your pet here if your usual clinic is closed and your pet is having an emergency!
Sep 02, 2020 · Noelle SunI brought my 4.5 year old Ragdoll here when he had been vomiting for 2 days. They ran a blood panel and X-ray on my cat and found that he had acute kidney failure (he ate something he shouldn’t have). They kept my cat for a few days on IV and did an ultrasound and regular blood work. They also allowed visits with him, which was nice. I don’t feel price gouged by them (vets are expensive without pet insurance) and the price of their X-ray and ultrasound was a little cheaper than my regular vet. I appreciate the detailed explanation of the ultrasound results by Dr Serrano and the regular follow ups and detailed explanation on continuous care from Dr Kanwar. My Ragdoll is home and is doing well.
Sep 06, 2020 · S KDr B was really wonderful, informative, and patient when we brought in my grandmother’s cat for a medical emergency. Ultimately we had to put the cat down but she made sure we were sure in our decision and equipped with all the information needed to make such a call on such short notice. I cannot speak about her highly enough.Unfortunately, we felt the vet tech who manned the front of office was extremely cold and rude. The cat was dying in my arms and he took his time gathering the paperwork necessary to be seen by the vet and simply watched us struggle to transfer the cat from my arms to my grandmas to fill out the paperwork as she cannot see. He seemed annoyed when my grandmother pointed out her last name was misspelled on the cremation paperwork and did a few other things that overall made a very stressful and sad situation harder to deal with.I really did appreciate Dr B’s work so I am happy to give a positive review of this facility and return here if i should have an emergency with my own animal but I really hope they learn the importance of bedside manner.
Jun 14, 2020 · EJ HoutonThey were AMAZING! I never write reviews but I will wherever I can about this place. I just got home from bringing in my cat who got her tail smooshed in the door. I am an anxious mess crying (with a mask on it’s even worse) and everyone there from Michele to another lovely girl to the vet Dr. Kanwar I felt so welcomed and nobody was judging. I have had really bad Experiences with vets before and have had a lot of trauma so to be treated so kindly and everyone be so sweet an patient made this terrible ordeal SO MUCH BETTER! Thank you to the staff! I would HIGHLY recommend them to ANYONE! ❤️
