- Routine Wellness and Preventative Care: This includes regular check-ups, physical examinations, and tailored vaccination protocols to keep pets healthy and prevent common diseases.
- Diagnostic Services: Utilizing various tools to accurately diagnose conditions, such as in-house laboratory testing (blood work, urinalysis, fecal exams), and possibly digital radiography (X-rays).
- Medical Treatment for Illnesses and Injuries: Comprehensive care for pets suffering from acute or chronic conditions, including prescribing medications, managing infections, and addressing various ailments.
- Surgical Procedures: Performing common soft-tissue surgeries such as spaying, neutering, mass removals, and other necessary operations.
- Dental Care: Professional dental cleanings, extractions, and other oral health services to prevent periodontal disease and maintain overall health.
- Pain Management: Developing strategies and prescribing medications to manage acute and chronic pain conditions in pets, enhancing their comfort and quality of life.
- Microchipping: Providing microchip implantation services for permanent identification, which is crucial for reuniting lost pets with their owners.
- Nutritional and Behavioral Counseling: Offering guidance on appropriate diets, weight management, and addressing common behavioral issues.
- Pharmacy Services: Dispensing necessary medications and supplements.
- Grooming Services: While some reviews mention grooming, it's important to clarify if this location offers full-service grooming or if this was a past service or specific to certain veterinarians. The clinic's primary focus would be on veterinary medical care.
- Emergency Care (during operating hours): While not a 24/7 emergency hospital, they would typically handle urgent medical needs during their business hours and provide referrals for after-hours emergencies.
Veterinary Care Group - Astoria, and its predecessor Broadway Animal Clinic, have been highlighted by customers for several key features and distinguishing qualities that make it a notable option for pet owners in New York.
- Knowledgeable and Thoughtful Staff: A consistent theme from positive reviews emphasizes the intelligence and thoughtfulness of the entire staff. They are recognized for their expertise and for providing thorough explanations, ensuring pet owners are well-informed about their pet's health and treatment options.
- Friendly and Caring Environment: The clinic fosters a friendly and caring atmosphere. Staff are described as welcoming and genuinely invested in the well-being of the pets and their owners, contributing to a positive experience.
- Ability to Handle Challenging Pet Behavior: A significant highlight is their success with pets who have had negative past vet experiences. One customer noted their dog, previously traumatized, was able to undergo examination and receive medicine without distress after visiting this clinic multiple times. This demonstrates a patient, gentle, and effective approach to handling nervous or fearful animals.
- Focus on Necessary Treatment: Positive feedback suggests a responsible approach to diagnostics and treatment, not immediately recommending "lots of expensive tests" but rather opting for effective, less invasive solutions when appropriate (e.g., antibiotics for a fever). This can be a major relief for pet owners concerned about costs.
- Compassionate Bedside Manner: The skillful handling of nervous pets and the generally kind "bedside manner" of the veterinarians are appreciated, reducing stress for both the animal and the owner.
However, it is crucial to acknowledge that some past reviews (predating its operation under Veterinary Care Group) describe very negative experiences, particularly concerning grooming services, sedation, and general care, with accusations of a "horrible dirty place," neglect, and staff who "don't care about pets of any kind." These contrasting reviews highlight the importance of current management and practices under Veterinary Care Group to consistently deliver the positive experiences described by other clients.

My dog had a terrible vet experience somewhere else, and since then, he won’t let any vet, or even some friends and strangers, examine him or pet him. We have now been here three times. The third time, my dog acted as he did before: he allowed examination, allowed medicine, and wasn’t traumatized. The entire staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and caring. I have been to five vets in Astoria, and a number of vets all over the city throughout my pet-owning experience, and the intelligence and thoughtfulness that this office has is truly hard to come by.
Nov 02, 2018 · Marlena N.Took my dog to get groomed and have a sedative because shes sensitive when it comes to the machines and scissors. My baby girl cryed for 4 hours straight, while the assistants were telling the vet to place another sedative to keep her quiet. She couldnt stop shaking for the entire week and kept hiding from us, lost appetite, she was scared and didnt know who to trust anymore. They truly dont care about pets of any kind. Horrible dirty place, horrible vets, there cats gave my freaking baby girl fleas!!! Dont bring your dog here! Dont recommend. If i had the option to give this place a zero star rating i would! Never coming back here and sticking with Blue Pearl from Forest Hills.
Aug 23, 2018 · Chelsea GutierrezVery unsatisfied with this vet. I took my puppy because she had diarrhea, they made it sound like she was having a deadly virus. They were not prepared, and did not have the appropriate test to diagnose my puppy. When they tried to manually get a stool sample, they hurt her even more, ended up bleeding afterwards. They did not tell me that they were giving her a sedative, and the effects that it would have on her. When I got a phone call with the results, they just said "is negative" with no explanation of what they checked nor asked if my puppy was better. Horrible service. Never again I'm taking either one of my pets to that place.
Nov 08, 2016 · barbara pereyraDo not bring your dog here to be groomed. We bought our 11 month old cockapoo in for a bath and puppy cut. 4 plus hours later we went to go pick him up and they shaved him down to his skin! After giving them specific instructions they failed to execute it. The dog was a ski-dish when we left so who knows what was done to him when he was there. I will never be going back and I suggest you don't either
Mar 13, 2016 · Emma CumminsThis place over charges you and wants you to pay everything upfront before they help your pet. I took my dog there for a UTI. Dr. Petel wanted to run so many tests which would have cost me more than $1000 for just a UTI without knowing the results from the urinalysis first. Also the antibiotics alone was $70When the results did come back he told me my dog needs to go on a "special diet" but wouldnt tell me what it was just special diet and that my dog might have diabetes so i needed a complete bloodwork. He didnt even check her weight only estimated in his head and did a half ass heart check with his stethescope.Went to another vet and they checked on spot with a touch of blood no diabetes!
