Banfield Pet Hospital Introduce
For pet owners in Minnesota, the health and well-being of our furry family members are of the utmost importance. Navigating veterinary care can sometimes be complex, especially when it comes to balancing quality treatment with affordability. Banfield Pet Hospital in Maplewood has established itself as a well-known name in the Twin Cities metro area, offering a wide array of veterinary services designed to promote proactive, preventative pet care. As a national network of hospitals, Banfield emphasizes a standardized approach to medicine and a focus on wellness plans to help pet owners budget for their pet's essential healthcare needs throughout the year.
The core philosophy of Banfield Pet Hospital is centered around their Optimum Wellness Plans®. These plans are designed to make preventive care—the foundation of a healthy life for any pet—both accessible and affordable. Instead of paying for each service individually, pet owners can enroll in a plan that bundles a variety of services, such as comprehensive exams, vaccinations, and diagnostic tests, into one predictable monthly payment. This approach aims to encourage regular veterinary visits and catch potential health issues early, which can be more effective and less expensive than treating a full-blown illness later on. Banfield's focus on routine health maintenance is what drives their entire model.
Banfield is a large, corporate-owned veterinary hospital. It's important for local pet owners to understand that their experience may be different from a smaller, privately owned clinic. While the corporate structure provides standardized protocols, advanced technology, and the ability to transfer records to over 1,000 locations nationwide, some clients have expressed concerns about communication and feeling like a "number." It is a good practice to research specific locations and read recent reviews to get a sense of the culture and service quality at a particular clinic. The Maplewood location, as part of the larger network, is LGBTQ+ friendly, which shows a commitment to inclusion for all members of the community.
Banfield Pet Hospital is located at 2370 White Bear Ave in Maplewood, MN 55109. The hospital is situated within the local PetSmart, which offers a unique level of convenience for pet owners. This location allows you to combine your veterinary visit with your regular pet supply shopping.
The hospital is committed to providing an accessible experience for all clients. It features a wheelchair-accessible parking lot, which simplifies the process of bringing your pet in for care. Banfield operates on a "by appointment" basis, and they recommend scheduling appointments in advance to ensure a smooth and timely visit.
Banfield Pet Hospital offers a wide array of veterinary services for cats and dogs, with a strong emphasis on the services included in their Optimum Wellness Plans®.
Preventative Care & Wellness: A focus on routine checkups, comprehensive exams, routine vaccinations, and parasite control. Services also include nutrition advice, health certificates, and pet health advice.
Diagnostics & Lab Work: The hospital utilizes digital radiography, ultrasonography, and in-house laboratory services for diagnostic testing, including fecal exams and blood work. They also perform DNA tests for canines to provide insights into breed and health traits.
Dental Care: Services include general dentistry, professional dental cleanings, and oral health assessments, which are often bundled into their wellness plans.
Surgical Services: Banfield offers general surgery, including spays and neuters, and other surgical care. The hospital is equipped with general anesthesia for these procedures.
Other Services: The hospital also provides microchipping, medical grooming, and compassionate end-of-life care. They have an online pharmacy for convenient prescription refills and medication management.
Virtual Petcare: A key feature of their wellness plans is access to 24/7 Pet Chat™, which allows clients to speak with a veterinary professional from home for quick advice and peace of mind.
Banfield's corporate model comes with both benefits and potential drawbacks. It's essential for pet owners to be aware of these features to make an informed decision.
Wellness Plan Model: The Optimum Wellness Plans are a significant feature, offering a predictable monthly cost for a set of preventive services. This can be a great option for pet owners who prefer a budgeting approach to pet healthcare. The plans include unlimited office visits, which can be a substantial benefit for pets with ongoing issues.
Convenience: The location inside PetSmart makes it easy to handle multiple errands at once. The online portal and app provide digital access to medical records, appointments, and virtual chat with veterinary professionals.
Corporate Structure: As a large corporation, Banfield has standardized protocols and procedures. This can ensure a consistent level of care across different locations, but it can also lead to communication challenges and a less personal feel than a family-owned practice. Some clients have reported frustration with communication issues and a feeling of being pushed to purchase extra services.
Emphasis on Sales: Some customers have noted that the clinic's focus on selling additional services and products beyond the wellness plan can make the experience feel transactional rather than collaborative. It is important for pet owners to read all documents carefully and ask questions to understand exactly what is included and what is an additional cost.

When choosing a veterinary hospital in Maplewood, what is worth choosing about Banfield Pet Hospital is its comprehensive and structured approach to preventative care. The Optimum Wellness Plans can be a valuable tool for pet owners looking for a predictable and affordable way to manage their pet's health. The unlimited office visits included in the plans can save money over time, especially for a new puppy or a pet with chronic health issues that require frequent monitoring. The convenience of a location inside PetSmart and the availability of virtual care through their app are also significant benefits for busy Minnesota families. It is important, however, for local users to understand the model of Banfield. Some online reviews raise concerns about communication and the focus on upselling services not covered by the wellness plan, particularly for dental extractions and other non-routine procedures. For a pet owner who is diligent about asking questions and wants a structured plan for their pet's wellness, Banfield offers a valuable service. For those who prioritize a long-term, highly personal relationship with a single vet, it may be worth considering their specific needs and reviewing all the plan details with care.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1In the end of July 2023, I had taken my dog to Banfield pet hospital in maplewood for a routine checkup and vet appt. During this time they offered to shave areas of my dog as he’s prone to hair matting, which I was initially thankful for; in retrospect, this decision has spiraled into an almost year long skin infection and irritation. The shaving they performed was botched and hacked up my dogs skin, resulting in the creation of a skin infection which has now lead into months long skin irritation and discomfort. Banfield failed to take responsibility for their actions and from there refused to appropriately treat and care for my dog unless we brought him back to their facility, which I was uncomfortable doing. We asked multiple rounds of questions regarding my pets care over the phone with assurance they would call back and assist which never occurred, even after repeated follow up.I sent the below photos to show proof of their “care” to which there was no acknowledgement of their actions. Since then his skin is incredibly infected and now his fur is falling out.Overall incredibly displeased and disappointed in the care given to my pet and I would warn others to consider another veterinarian or Banfield location.
February 27 · Sydney HansfordEveryone was pleasant. I got the optimum wellness plus plan which should've included most of the basics for my dog for the year. I got it because it was affordable. I believe it would've included the majority of her healthcare maintenance for the year however, when we brought her in for her dental week after I had her initial physical and yearly vaccinations, I was given a two page sheet to read and decide if I wanted her to have extra things done. From what I understood my dogs's cleaning was included, and all the necessary lab work was included in her plan. I was told the doctor would call me later which has been my experience in the past with other vets. I knew extractions would be extra.I was called around 4 o'clock to come pick my dog up and was told her cleaning was done but I would need to bring her back soon to have three extractions. That would cost an extra $1,000 to $1200. that would require putting her under anesthesia again that would require putting her under anesthesia again and making her optimum wellness plan totally unaffordable and much more expensive. The doctor said she ran out of time.
May 15 · Deb ConleyToday was the 2nd cancelation last minute. Today the reason was "the provider can't see pets"... super frustrating. I took the afternoon off and they call 4 hours before our appointment. Not professional at all!
August 04 · Sara TigueBrooke at the front desk was super friendly and treated me and my puppy like friends while also being super informative and helpful!Dr. Kaplan was super informative and made sure all of my questions were answered and gave me all the information I needed to make sure I was taking the right steps in my puppies care and helped me understand when to get my puppy spayed.Aliccia the doctors assistant (I think) was awesome! Cared for me and my puppy and walked me through the wellness plan as well as other options and what’s all included in her care, as well as getting me some reading materials on the options I get with my plan. Also she wrote my puppies name on her bag and just made the whole visit so great !!
March 25 · Rebekah AndersonGreat customer service from staff!!!I signed up for the monthly wellness plan. I were super disappointed that it took FOUR weeks for me to see my cats dental x-ray pictures. Also, when doing the dental cleaning and there's more work to be done. Email the customer the bill right away and then explain to them over the phone what's going on. When you call me and told me it's going to cost $600 to pull a cat side tooth. That's more than a human tooth being pulled. I should have been able to see the bill right away and why it cost so much. I shouldn't be left with the choice of pay $800 today for teeth pulling and x-rays or come back later and pay $1,200. I denied to pull the tooth that day because I wanted to see the bill and the x-rays. I'll come back and do other services.
