Call Ahead Veterinary is conveniently situated at 654 5th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11215, USA. This location places it squarely within the bustling and well-known Park Slope/South Slope area of Brooklyn, a vibrant neighborhood recognized for its residential charm, local businesses, and excellent community amenities. Fifth Avenue itself is a major commercial corridor, making the clinic easily identifiable and accessible.
Accessibility to Call Ahead Veterinary is a key advantage for New York pet owners. For those who prefer to drive, Fifth Avenue offers straightforward routes from various parts of Brooklyn, and while street parking can sometimes be a challenge in busy urban areas, options are typically available in the vicinity. It is always advisable to allow for a few extra minutes to find a suitable parking spot, especially during peak hours. Furthermore, the clinic's location benefits significantly from Brooklyn's robust public transportation network. Several MTA bus lines run directly along 5th Avenue and intersecting streets, providing convenient connections from diverse neighborhoods. Additionally, numerous subway stations are within a reasonable walking distance, including those serving the R and D/N/Q lines, offering broad access from across Brooklyn and even Manhattan. This strong public transit connectivity ensures that pet owners, regardless of their mode of transport, can reach Call Ahead Veterinary with relative ease, which is beneficial for both routine visits and situations requiring prompt attention. The integration of the clinic within a well-established and familiar neighborhood adds to its appeal as a local pet care resource.
Based on the provided customer feedback, Call Ahead Veterinary appears to focus on providing essential and direct veterinary care for common pet ailments. While a comprehensive list of all services is not available, the reviews highlight specific areas of treatment.
- Diagnosis and Treatment of Common Ailments: The clinic successfully diagnosed and treated a 13-year-old Yorkie experiencing bloody stools, leading to a quick resolution of the issue. This indicates their capability in addressing gastrointestinal problems.
- Parasite Screening and Management: The vet performed a check for parasites, confirming their absence in a case of bloody stools. This suggests they conduct basic diagnostic tests for parasitic infections.
- Ocular Health Treatment: For a pet with excessive eye leakage, the vet prescribed eye drops that effectively resolved the issue. This demonstrates their ability to diagnose and treat common eye conditions.
- Injections and Medication Prescriptions: The vet administered an injection for the Yorkie's condition and prescribed eye drops, indicating that they offer medication administration and prescription services.
It is important to note that the clinic appears to operate with a streamlined staff, primarily involving the vet directly in patient care and scheduling, as mentioned in one review. This might suggest a focus on core veterinary services rather than a very broad range of specialized treatments. For detailed information on specific services, it is always best to call the clinic directly.
Call Ahead Veterinary, while offering essential pet care, presents a unique set of features and highlights, as gleaned from customer experiences. These elements shape the clinic's identity and how it serves the Brooklyn pet community.
- Effective Treatment Outcomes: A significant highlight is the successful resolution of specific health issues. For instance, a 13-year-old Yorkie's bloody stools stopped after an injection and her chronic eye leakage improved significantly with prescribed eye drops. This demonstrates the vet's ability to accurately diagnose and provide effective treatment for common pet ailments, leading to tangible improvements in pets' health.
- Direct Veterinarian Interaction: One notable aspect is the direct, hands-on involvement of the veterinarian. As mentioned in a review, it appears to be primarily the vet managing multiple aspects of the practice, including patient scheduling during consultations. While this could be perceived as "old school," it also means direct access to the vet's expertise without intermediary staff for certain functions.
- Personalized Attention: Given the lean operational style, there's an implication of a more personalized approach where the vet handles cases from diagnosis to treatment and follow-up, potentially fostering a closer vet-client relationship for some pet owners.
However, it is crucial to address the areas of concern highlighted in one review, as these are also part of the clinic's operational features:
- Cleanliness and Sterilization Concerns: A significant point of concern raised by a customer involved observations within the "exam" room, specifically mentioning "multiple open containers of bleach and a cup of syringes that may or may not have been previously used," and the absence of a sharps container for disposal. These observations raised questions about the clinic's adherence to modern hygiene and sterilization protocols, leading the client to refuse an injection. This is a critical factor for pet owners considering their options.
- Operational Style: The vet is described as "very old school" and taking "multiple phone calls during my visit to schedule other patients." While this might contribute to the "call ahead" nature of the practice, it could also lead to interruptions during consultations and may not align with expectations for a modern, seamless veterinary visit.
- Limited Staff Presence: The observation that it was "just him and no other staff" suggests a very lean operational model. While this might contribute to potentially lower overhead costs that could translate to more reasonable pricing, it could also impact the speed of service, comprehensive patient handling, and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
These points of feedback present a mixed picture, suggesting that while the veterinarian may be capable of effective medical treatment for certain conditions, the clinic's operational practices and hygiene standards, as perceived by some clients, may not align with everyone's expectations for a modern veterinary facility.

For pet owners in the New York area, particularly those residing in Brooklyn's Park Slope/South Slope vicinity, Call Ahead Veterinary offers a localized option for essential pet care. Its convenient location on 5th Avenue provides straightforward accessibility via both private vehicle and Brooklyn's extensive public transportation network, a significant plus for urban dwellers managing their pets' needs.
When considering this clinic, locals might find its approach suitable if they prioritize direct interaction with the veterinarian and value a more traditional, "old school" style of practice. The positive outcome for a 13-year-old Yorkie, whose issues with bloody stools and eye leakage were successfully resolved, demonstrates the veterinarian's ability to effectively diagnose and treat common ailments. For some pet owners, the focus on direct treatment and potentially more streamlined communication with the single practitioner might be appealing.
However, it is crucial for prospective clients to be aware of the mixed feedback regarding operational procedures and facility observations. Concerns raised about hygiene practices and the vet taking calls during consultations indicate a need for individual assessment and perhaps a direct conversation about these aspects before a visit. For locals who prioritize a highly modern clinic with a larger support staff and stringent, visibly maintained hygiene protocols, it would be prudent to set clear expectations or consider alternative options in the area. Ultimately, Call Ahead Veterinary appears to serve a segment of the local pet-owning community that values direct, results-oriented treatment for specific issues and is comfortable with a more traditional, lean operational style. For others, it might be a place to consider after a thorough inquiry into their specific concerns.

Call Ahead Veterinary Reviews
Took my 13 yr old yorkie here because she was having bloody stools the vet gave her and injection and a few days later her poop was normal no more blood. He also checked her for parasites none either was found. I was also concerned about her eyes they always seemed to leak a lot so he prescribed an eye drop that helped her eyes they are no longer leaking. Thank you so much for your help.
Apr 05, 2025 · Jacqueline DiazI just saw the vet a few minutes ago and was disturbed by what I saw in the “exam” room. I’ve attached pictures so you can see what I’m talking about. The vet seemed nice enough but very old school. As others have mentioned, it was just him and no other staff. He took multiple phone calls during my visit to schedule other patients.I was not happy to see multiple open containers of bleach and a cup of syringes that may or may not have been previously used. I did not see a sharps container for disposal. He wanted to do an injection and I refused due to what I saw. I would recommend seeing another vet in the area.

Jul 05, 2023 · Theresa SiderisThis place should not be open, I took my cat there because there was no place open. A few days ago my cat was acting strange. The vet is very old and you can't understand what he is saying. He told me my cat was fine and had no problems. A few days later I took my cat to another place and his diagnosis was that he was sick and died. I feel so guilty for listening to this old man. Don't take your pets there. The care is cheap but I paid for it with my cat's life.
