Its location near major thoroughfares and accessible public transport routes makes it a practical destination for pet owners traveling from various parts of Portland and the wider Oregon region.
Accessibility is particularly critical when dealing with a pet that has a heart condition, as stress and prolonged travel can exacerbate their symptoms. The NE 42nd Ave location aims to minimize such challenges, offering straightforward navigation and typically providing adequate parking. CVCA Cardiac Care for Pets is entirely dedicated to veterinary cardiology, meaning their services are highly focused and specialized. They offer a comprehensive range of diagnostics and treatments specifically for heart and circulatory system conditions in dogs and cats.
- Comprehensive Cardiac Consultations: Every visit begins with a thorough evaluation of your pet's cardiac health, including a detailed history, physical examination, and discussion of symptoms.
- Echocardiography (Cardiac Ultrasound): This is a cornerstone diagnostic tool. Board-certified cardiologists perform and interpret echocardiograms, which provide real-time, detailed images of your pet's heart structure and function, allowing for precise diagnosis of conditions like valve disorders, heart murmurs, and structural defects. This non-invasive procedure is crucial for determining the specific type and severity of heart disease.
- Electrocardiography (ECG/EKG): Used to assess the electrical activity of the heart, an ECG helps diagnose arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) and can provide clues about heart enlargement or other cardiac issues.
- Radiography (X-rays): Chest X-rays are often used to evaluate the size and shape of the heart and lungs, and to detect fluid accumulation in the lungs (pulmonary edema) which is a sign of congestive heart failure.
- Blood Pressure Measurement: Blood pressure is routinely measured to assess for hypertension, which can affect heart health, particularly in older pets.
- Holter Monitoring: For pets with intermittent arrhythmias or fainting spells, a Holter monitor (a portable ECG device) can be used to record heart activity over an extended period (24-48 hours) while the pet is at home, providing valuable diagnostic information that might be missed during a short clinic visit.
- Medical Management of Heart Disease: Based on diagnostic findings, cardiologists develop individualized treatment plans, primarily involving medications to manage various cardiac conditions such as congestive heart failure, dilated cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and arrhythmias. The goal is to improve the pet's quality of life and slow disease progression.
- Congenital Heart Disease Management: Diagnosis and ongoing management of heart conditions that pets are born with. While some congenital defects may require surgical intervention, many are managed medically.
- Pericardiocentesis: A procedure to remove fluid that has accumulated around the heart, which can impair its function and lead to serious symptoms.
- Collaboration with Primary Veterinarians: CVCA works very closely with your family veterinarian, providing detailed reports and communicating regularly to ensure a cohesive and continuous care plan for your pet.

They are lauded for their kindness, clear communication, and efforts to ensure both pet and owner comfort during what can be a very stressful time. The "bright colored bandanna for achievements" for pets, as mentioned by a client, illustrates their dedication to positive patient experiences.
- Collaboration with Referring Veterinarians: CVCA emphasizes a collaborative model, working closely with primary care veterinarians. This ensures a holistic approach to your pet's health, with specialists managing the cardiac condition and keeping your regular vet fully informed for overall care.

CVCA Cardiac Care for Pets Reviews
I absolutely love Dr Allen and all the team over at CVCA Portland! They have been seeing my 6yo pup Maude for CVD for three years now. Luckily, our girl Maude is happy and healthy with the treatment and care they give her! I cannot recommend them enough. Each time they give her a little bright colored bandanna for her achievements, she pounces out so proudly wearing it. Each person there is so kind, and has helped us every step of the way.
Apr 25, 2025 · Chelsea EstelleI am a veterinarian in Vancouver, Washington.. I highly recommend all the cardiologists at CVCA to my clients. They are gentle and practice feline-friendly handling. They fed my cat, Walter, his treats during the exam and always strive to maintain his emotional comfort. I also respect and admire the skills and professionalism exhibited by ALL the team members during my visits. I am probably not the "easiest" client to manage because as veterinarian I know too much for my own good. But the staff treat me with all the quiet, comforting regard they extend to all their clients and their companions. So, if your dog or cat needs a cardiologist, this is the team to help you.
Jun 27, 2025 · Carrie BurhennI took our dog in for an echocardiogram today and Dr. Allen and the team at CVCA were wonderful. Dr. Allen was very friendly, had great things to say about our sweet girl, and made sure to clearly explain the results of her exam with me. Our dog is very reactive to other animals and the staff worked with me to get her in and out of the exam room and lobby without any issues, which I greatly appreciate! They even gave her a cute bandana with calming pheromones to help her relax.
Apr 08, 2025 · Amanda GleasonThey took care of my cat’s dilated cardiomyopathy and prescribed the perfect doses of medication that have given my cat a new lease on life. I can’t thank them enough. They are incredibly knowledgeable, thorough, and professional. Worth every penny for a beloved family member.
Apr 18, 2025 · Patty RamirezDr. Allen and her team really blew me away today. They were able to get my cat in same-day for respiratory distress related to CHF, and handled him with a lot of care. Dr. Allen took her time to provide an in depth explanation of their findings, diagnoses, and treatment options. The knowledge helped to give me a sense of control in a chaotic time. She answered all of my questions, was sincerely empathetic and is clearly passionate about the work she does (and which she does damn well). I appreciated her pragmatism and prioritization of pet wellbeing/quality of life. 11/10 vet, would walk across hot coals for this woman, would highly recommend to anyone whose furbaby has cardiological needs!
