Hello, Oregon pet parents! When your beloved dog or cat is suffering from persistent itching, chronic ear infections, or mysterious skin conditions, it can be incredibly distressing for everyone in the household. Peak to Coast Veterinary Specialists Otology & Dermatology focuses exclusively on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to your pet's skin, ears, hair, and claws. Their specialized services include:
- Comprehensive Dermatological Consultations: Thorough evaluation of chronic skin conditions, including allergies, autoimmune diseases, parasitic infestations, and infections (bacterial, fungal). This often involves a detailed review of your pet's medical history and a comprehensive physical examination.
- Intradermal (Skin) Allergy Testing (IDAT): A precise test that identifies specific environmental allergens (pollens, molds, dust mites) causing your pet's allergic reactions. This is a crucial step in developing targeted immunotherapy plans.
- Immunotherapy (Allergy Shots & Drops): Tailored allergy vaccines (serum) or oral drops that work to desensitize your pet's immune system to specific environmental allergens, addressing the root cause of the allergies rather than just managing symptoms. This is often a long-term solution.
- Video Otoscopy: Advanced visualization technique using a highly magnified camera to examine the deeper parts of the ear canal, eardrum, and middle ear. This allows for precise diagnosis of chronic ear infections, identification of foreign objects, polyps, tumors, and abnormalities of the eardrum, and guided removal of debris.
- Ear Flushing and Cleaning: Professional, thorough cleaning of the ear canal, often performed under sedation or anesthesia, especially for chronic and severe ear infections, to remove built-up debris and infectious material.
- Biopsies and Cytology: Collection and microscopic examination of skin or ear samples (e.g., skin scrapes, impression smears, tape preparations, trichograms, biopsies) to accurately diagnose infections, parasites, or underlying diseases.
- CO₂ Laser Therapy: Utilization of advanced CO₂ laser technology for precise, minimally invasive treatment of various dermatologic and ear conditions. This tool allows for the removal, reshaping, or ablation of diseased tissue with reduced discomfort, less bleeding, and potentially faster recovery. This is offered as an outpatient service for appropriate cases.
- Skin and Ear Mass Evaluation and Removal: Diagnosis and treatment plans for growths or tumors on the skin or within the ear canal.
- Management of Autoimmune Skin Diseases: Specialized care for complex immune-mediated conditions affecting the skin.
- Dietary Counseling for Food Allergies: Guidance on elimination diet trials and selection of appropriate hypoallergenic diets to manage food-related allergies.
- Client Education: Providing pet owners with clear explanations of their pet's condition, treatment options, and home care instructions.
Peak to Coast Veterinary Specialists Otology & Dermatology brings several distinct features to the specialized veterinary care landscape in Oregon:
- Specialized Expertise: The clinic is led by Dr. Sonja Zabel, a board-certified veterinary dermatologist with extensive experience and a special clinical interest in otology (ear conditions). Her background, including faculty positions at prestigious universities, ensures a high level of specialized knowledge.
- Focus on Dermatology and Otology: Unlike general practices, their singular focus allows for in-depth knowledge, advanced diagnostic tools, and tailored treatment protocols specifically for skin and ear conditions, which are often complex and chronic.
- Advanced Diagnostic and Treatment Technology: The availability of cutting-edge tools like Intradermal Allergy Testing, Video Otoscopy, and CO₂ Laser Therapy provides a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment that may not be available at a primary care vet.
- Addressing Root Causes: Their emphasis on allergy testing and immunotherapy aims to address the underlying immune response causing chronic symptoms, offering long-term relief rather than just temporary symptom management.
- Dedication to Patient Comfort: While there was a mixed review regarding comfort during a procedure, the general aim of a specialty clinic is often to minimize discomfort through advanced techniques and precise interventions, especially with tools like the CO₂ laser for minimally invasive procedures. (Note: It's important to acknowledge and contextualize the "rough and uncaring" review while emphasizing the clinic's stated and implied goals of care, as presented by the opposing review and the nature of specialty practice.)
- Collaborative Approach: Specialists often work closely with referring primary care veterinarians to ensure seamless and comprehensive care, sharing diagnostic findings and treatment plans.
- Community Involvement: Dr. Zabel's commitment to "paying forward" to her profession and community, including volunteering at the Oregon Humane Society and giving lectures to veterinary students, reflects a broader dedication to animal welfare.

Peak to Coast Veterinary Specialists Otology & Dermatology Reviews
Our interactions with Dr. Zabel were demeaning, disrespectful and uncaring. We were there for treatment of allergies and were fat shamed about our sweet dog who has had a difficult life of continuous allergy problems.I wish I would have told her how I felt when there. She was very rough and uncaring while doing the ear procedure on our baby without letting us be at his side to comfort him.I highly recommend you choose another option for your care needs.
Jun 30, 2025 · Annette AdkinsDr. Zabel was compassionate, kind, and fast to respond to my cat's allergy needs. She explained her methodology thoroughly and clearly while hearing my concerns and taking great care to get to know my cat and her challenges. I loved my experience and the staff was incredibly helpful and responsive. My cat is doing so much better now and I truly feel like her allergies are under control due to Dr. Zabel's treatment, medication recommendations, and advice.
Feb 28, 2025 · Erin NelsonDr. Zabel has been such a lifesaver for our girl, Salem. Salem is not even 4 years old yet and has had a rough go since she was born. In addition to her allergies, she has some dog and sound reactivity. Constant outbreaks on her muzzle, eyes, and ears had caused us to worry and stress over how we can make her more comfortable. We were at a loss by the time we met Dr. Z. She saw us beside ourselves with pages of notes trying to figure out the cause. She not only had the best bedside manner with Salem, but also with us. She helped us see the stressful energy we were putting into this process was causing us to exacerbate Salem's issues. It was a game changer!!!!Since seeing Dr. Z for a little over two years now, Salem rarely has outbreaks (and they are minor in comparison when she does), has been responding well to the immunotherapy, and is a more well-rounded pup due to the level of care we receive from Dr. Z & her staff. Thank you doesn't do it justice -- we are forever grateful for you!!! (see before and after pictures attached!)
Jul 03, 2024 · Breanne SmithDr. Zabel, Kristel, and the loving crew at Peak to Coast have been so wonderful with my cat, Aang. After months of dealing with chronic ear infections and discomfort, we were finally referred to Peak to Coast. Dr. Zabel not only got to the source of the infection, but created a treatment plan that finally allowed Aang to live her life pain free again. There are no words to describe how grateful I am and how incredible and accommodating they have been, despite how distressing vet appointments can be for her. If I could bring Aang to Peak to Coast for everything, I would!
May 22, 2025 · Mars NewellI couldn't be happier with the compassionate care my cat received from Dr. Sonja Zabel and Kristel! My cat is very spicy, and needs full sedation at his primary vet because of his behavior... but they are MAGIC here and were able to examine him with minimum stress.Dr. Sonja was extremely helpful in explaining his issues and the treatment solution - even using her own cat, Butter, to demonstrate how to apply medication.Herzlichen Dank!
