Banfield Pet Hospital in Portland is located at 1615 NE 21st Ave, Portland, OR 97232, USA. This address places the clinic in a central and generally accessible part of Northeast Portland. Situated just off NE Sandy Boulevard and near other major thoroughfares, the location offers a degree of convenience for residents across various NE Portland neighborhoods, including those in the Kerns, Laurelhurst, and Hollywood districts. Being in a relatively commercial area, it might be integrated into a shopping center or stand as a standalone facility with its own parking.
For pet owners relying on personal vehicles, the clinic's position on NE 21st Avenue should allow for relatively straightforward access. Proximity to public transit routes, common in this part of Portland, could also provide an alternative for those without cars. However, while the location itself might be convenient, the overall accessibility and ease of a visit can be significantly impacted by operational factors such as waiting times and appointment management, which are important considerations for pet parents in a bustling urban environment like Portland.
Banfield Pet Hospital typically offers a standardized range of veterinary services across its locations, designed to provide comprehensive care for common domestic animals. These services usually include:
- Wellness Exams: Routine physical examinations to monitor a pet's overall health, identify potential issues early, and maintain general well-being.
- Vaccinations: Essential immunizations tailored to a pet's age, lifestyle, and local disease prevalence, crucial for preventative health.
- Preventative Care: Programs often include parasite control (fleas, ticks, heartworm), nutritional counseling, and lifestyle recommendations to promote long-term health. Banfield is well-known for its Optimum Wellness Plans, which package preventative services.
- Diagnostic Services: Capabilities for basic diagnostic tests, such as blood work, urinalysis, and fecal exams, for quick assessment of a pet's health. Imaging services like X-rays are also typically available.
- Spay/Neuter Procedures: Common surgical procedures offered to control pet populations and address certain health and behavioral issues.

- Limited Emergency/Urgent Care: While not a 24/7 emergency clinic, they typically handle urgent cases during business hours and can provide referrals for after-hours emergencies.
Banfield Pet Hospital at this Portland location exhibits a mixed bag of features and highlights, as reflected in client experiences.
- Friendly and Caring Staff: A consistent positive highlight is that the staff members are generally friendly and demonstrate genuine care for the pets. They are noted for treating animals with kindness, which is crucial for reducing pet anxiety during visits.
- Pet Wellness Plans: Banfield's national model often emphasizes its Optimum Wellness Plans, which can be a perceived highlight for some pet owners looking for bundled preventative care and predictable monthly payments for services like routine exams and vaccinations.
- Inconsistent Communication and Scheduling: A significant recurring concern is the struggle with internal communication and scheduling. Clients report instances where the clinic seemed unaware of the reason for a pet's visit upon arrival, requiring multiple explanations. There are also reports of appointments scheduled incorrectly or not appearing on their internal calendar, leading to frustration.
- Lack of Proactive Communication for Necessary Procedures: A notable issue is the lack of proactive communication regarding additional required appointments or tests. Clients reported being informed only upon arrival for a pre-scheduled appointment that a different type of visit was needed first, causing delays and wasted trips.
- Difficulty Reaching the Clinic by Phone: Many clients express frustration with the inability to reach the clinic by phone. Calls reportedly "just ring forever," and voicemails are often not returned, leading to significant communication breakdowns for pet owners trying to get assistance or follow up.
- Extended Wait Times: Even with confirmed appointments, clients frequently experience wait times of 30 minutes or more before their pet is seen by a vet. This unpredictability makes it difficult for pet owners to plan their day and can add to stress.
- Concerns about Vaccine Protocol and Record Review: A particularly alarming incident involved over-vaccination and under-vaccination due to the clinic reportedly not reviewing provided vaccine records. This highlights a critical breakdown in patient safety protocols and communication, leading to potentially dangerous health implications for the pet.
- Perceived Push for Unnecessary Services (Corporate Vet Aspect): While not explicitly stated for this location in the provided reviews, a common sentiment associated with corporate veterinary chains like Banfield can be a perception of pushing for certain services or plans, as opposed to solely needs-based care. The over-vaccination incident, regardless of intent, might feed into such concerns for some pet owners.

For pet owners in Portland, Oregon, particularly those in the Northeast neighborhoods, choosing Banfield Pet Hospital on NE 21st Ave requires careful consideration of both its potential benefits and reported challenges. While the staff is consistently praised for their friendly demeanor and genuine care for pets, which is a crucial aspect of any veterinary visit, clients have frequently highlighted significant operational issues. These include persistent problems with appointment scheduling, a perceived lack of proactive communication regarding necessary procedures, and significant difficulties in reaching the clinic by phone, with calls often going unanswered and voicemails unreturned. The documented instance of incorrect vaccination due to a failure to review records is a serious concern that pet owners should be aware of.
Ultimately, while the accessibility of the location in NE Portland might be convenient, the recurring frustrations with logistical inefficiencies and communication breakdowns could impact a pet owner's "mental well-being," as one reviewer candidly stated. For locals prioritizing a seamless experience, consistent communication, and absolute certainty in their pet's medical record management, it may be prudent to exercise extra vigilance or explore alternative veterinary options. While the caring interaction with pets themselves is a positive, the operational aspects suggest that pet parents considering this Banfield location should be prepared to over-communicate and meticulously confirm every detail of their pet's care.

Banfield Pet Hospital Reviews
The only good thing I have to say about this Banfield location is that the staff is friendly and treat pets with care. That being said it always felt like they didn't know why pets were being seen until they had you in the medical rooms. I had to explain multiple times why a pet was being seen. On top of that we had MULTIPLE appointments that were scheduled incorrectly or scheduled with me but never added to their schedule. We had appointments that were scheduled months in advance and only when in office would staff mention that a pet need a different type of appointment before their medical care could be done. Why was no one able to check the schedule and call us to let us know that would be able to perform the medical need? There were many times where no one will answer phones, just rings forever and when we could connect to voicemail no one would call back. When you did make it in office and your appointment shows up on their calendar they will make you wait 30+ minutes to actually see a vet. Making it extremely hard to plan ahead for how long you'll be in office.Very frustrating when so many issues arise when you are just trying to make sure your pet gets their medical needs met. I would not recommend this office to anyone, take your service to a less chaotic vet office for your own mental well-being.
Mar 31, 2025 · R ZI brought my dog here today to get his vaccinations updated. I sent in his shot record the day before, called to confirm they received it, and then upon dropping off my dog, I also confirmed they had his record I sent in. When I picked my dog back up, the tech stated he would prepare my dogs rabies certificate - I paused - my dog didn’t need rabies vaccine as he was on a three year. I immediately stated - “what are you talking about? His rabies is good through 2026?” - come to find out THEY DIDN'T EVEN REVIEW THE RECORD I SENT THEM. In addition to overvaccinating my dog for something he didn’t need, they didn’t give him what he actually needed. They egregiously over vaccinated and under vaccinated my dog, entirely omitting his record they were sent. They never called to talk to me about what he would be receiving, they just assumed and treated without communication at all. This is APPALLING and extremely dangerous. This is malpractice. This is unacceptable. I will be contacting corporate about this. Pet parents, beware and ensure you do everything you can to over communicate.
May 17, 2025 · AmyNo way I’m giving to give this location 5 stars.Took my cat there a few months ago because she had a uti and left her there for the day. Got a call later saying she hadn’t gone yet and they insisted I bring her every day until they could get a sample. Argued with them until they agreed to give antiobiotics.Other issues including constantly being on hold and lately they’ve schedule has been weird. Seems like they’re closed at least once a week without notice or closing an hour for lunch.
Jun 08, 2025 · Alex BrameDr. Weitzel and her assistant were patient and kind. They were short-staffed but still gave me lots of time for questions and made me feel very comfortable. I know my cat Clooney was in good care.
May 05, 2025 · Audra JonesBEST VET VISIT EVER!!! I wish I could give 10 stars. Celeste the Vet Tech was amazing, patient, sweet and explained everything. My Chihuahua is very nervous and defensive but they handled her perfectly. There was a big snafu in the system which she patiently and apologetically took care of.Dr Huntington is the best Veterinarian I’ve ever seen. The explanations she gave were informative with no pressure or judgement on any services.I did have a previous non-helpful visit at another location. Dr Huntington was empathetic and apologetic about that happening.Belle says yip yip yelp lick ❤️ translated to: thank you for keeping me healthy.
