The Southwest Barnes Road location is generally well-connected, offering relatively easy access whether you're coming from downtown Portland, the western suburbs, or other parts of the city. The hospital's presence in a well-established commercial area often means ample parking is available, reducing the stress associated with veterinary visits, especially when you have a pet accompanying you.
For local pet owners, accessibility is more than just a matter of driving distance. It also encompasses the ease of scheduling appointments and the general convenience of the facility itself. While individual experiences may vary, a central location like this aims to minimize travel time for pet emergencies or routine visits, making it simpler to integrate pet care into your busy schedule.
Banfield Pet Hospital is known for offering a wide array of veterinary services designed to address the diverse needs of pets at different life stages. Their approach often emphasizes preventive care, aiming to keep pets healthy and detect potential issues early on. Here's a general overview of the services you can typically expect:
- Preventive Care: This is a cornerstone of Banfield's philosophy, often including comprehensive physical examinations, vaccinations tailored to your pet's lifestyle and risk factors, parasite control (fleas, ticks, heartworm), and nutritional counseling. Regular preventive care is vital for maintaining your pet's long-term health and can significantly reduce the likelihood of serious health problems developing.
- Diagnostic Services: When your pet isn't feeling well, accurate diagnosis is the first step towards effective treatment. Banfield typically offers in-house laboratory services for blood tests, urinalysis, and fecal exams, as well as imaging services like X-rays to help veterinarians assess internal conditions.
- Surgical Procedures: While the scope of surgeries may vary by location, many Banfield hospitals provide routine surgical services, including spaying and neutering, as well as some minor soft tissue surgeries. For more complex procedures, they may offer referrals to specialized veterinary surgeons.
- Dental Care: Pet dental health is often overlooked but is crucial for overall well-being. Banfield typically provides dental examinations, cleanings (often requiring anesthesia), and advice on at-home dental care to prevent periodontal disease.
- Puppy and Kitten Plans: These specialized plans are designed to give young pets a healthy start, including initial vaccinations, deworming, and guidance for new pet owners on topics like socialization and training.
- Senior Pet Care: As pets age, their healthcare needs evolve. Banfield often offers specialized care for senior pets, focusing on early detection of age-related conditions like arthritis, kidney disease, and cognitive dysfunction.
- Microchipping: A vital service for pet safety, microchipping provides a permanent form of identification, significantly increasing the chances of being reunited with a lost pet.
Beyond the standard services, Banfield Pet Hospital often highlights certain features that aim to enhance the client and pet experience.
- Optimum Wellness Plans: A key feature of Banfield is its Optimum Wellness Plans (OWPs). These are annual packages that bundle preventive care services at a discounted rate, often including unlimited office visits, vaccinations, routine diagnostic tests, and discounts on other services. For many pet owners, these plans offer a predictable way to budget for their pet's healthcare and encourage regular preventive care.
- Convenient Hours: Many Banfield locations strive to offer extended and weekend hours, recognizing that pet emergencies and routine visits don't always fit into a standard 9-to-5 schedule. While specific hours should always be verified with the Portland location, this general approach aims to provide flexibility for busy pet owners.
- Network of Hospitals: Being part of a larger national network means that patient records can often be accessed at different Banfield locations across the country. This can be particularly beneficial for pet owners who travel frequently or relocate, ensuring continuity of care.
- Focus on Preventive Care: As mentioned, Banfield places a strong emphasis on preventive medicine. This proactive approach aims to catch health issues early, often leading to more effective treatments and better long-term outcomes for pets.

Banfield Pet Hospital Reviews
Unfortunately, I have to leave a bad review. I’ve always obtained the travel documents for my dog in Florida, but this time I had to travel from Oregon. We have traveled internationally with our dog for many years, always requesting the travel permit well in advance as required, and we have paid the fee. After searching many places, in Oregon Benfield was the only one that could give us an appointment. When asking about the prices at two different Benfield locations, we were quoted $89. However, on the day of the appointment, we were told the fee was $415, with no other options available since our flight was in 20 days, so we had to pay.A few days before the trip, I called several times asking about the certificate, as they had never sent it( they promised it )The person who answered had no idea and said we would have to wait until the veterinarian was available to ask.The day before the trip, the form finally arrived. In conclusion:Poor communicationThe physical examination of my dog took less than 10 minutes (and I was charged $115 for the vet’s time).Do not offer international travel document services if you are not well-versed in the process
Jan 31, 2025 · laura naranjoCame here to do drop off my cat for comprehensive and updates on shots. It was simple and the doctors and staff were finished within 2 hours of drop off.
Feb 12, 2025 · Marie MenesesI never write reviews but my experience with this office has been more than frustrating. The wellness plans are a complete joke. The only reason I even signed up is because for a while that was the only way you could actually get an appointment and/or response from the team. Now they don’t even care… no one answers the phone, you stand in the lobby waiting for someone to come to the front. I had two animals on wellness plans and two who were not - there was definitely a difference in service between the four even though they were dealing with the same owner. I could spend hours listing reasons to avoid this clinic - but for the health and wellbeing of your animals just stay away. There are so many better options available! Oh and by the way - Milo is still deceased - stop emailing about his overdue vaccinations!
Jun 28, 2024 · Heather BeckTook my dog in who has recently sounded congested and sneezing a lot. Also she has bumps on her skin that has been tested and diagnosed as a immune disorder. Dog was at Banfield the whole day - cost was $400.Got nothing for her sneezing and congestion. No diagnosis just told to bring her back if anything changes. I brought her in to prevent her from getting worse. The doctor said they requested records from vet who ran skin test, but hadn't received by the time doctor called me. I asked the doctor if she'd be in tomorrow, she said yes - as I was hoping for some diagnosis, soon. Upon picking up my dog I confirmed the Vet Tech (who gave me a ointment to put on my dog skin) if the Dr. would be in the next day - she said no. I don't understand why the doctor wasn't forthright with providing more of a time line. I'm still worried about my dog and out $400 for a visit that should've been around $150.I've been a customer of Banfield (in different locations) throughout the years with my 6 year old pup. It's not always consistently great service, but my dog has never been sick. So therefore, the service (for vaccinations, flee & tick prevention, teeth cleaning, and standard wellness visits) have sufficed.I typically don't write negative reviews as I don't want to hurt any ones business. However, I really thought I'd feel better (after our visit) as there would be more care shared. I was willing to spend even more money - if that's what it took to make sure my pup was in solid health. Unfortunately, now I just feel like money wasted and that we weren't taken seriously.
Dec 25, 2023 · Joy AlfordAbsolutely the most unprofessional and rude experience I've had with a vet. I scheduled an appointment at 2PM, got a confirmation. Luckily I took a screenshot on my phone. I show up and they tell me I don't have an appointment for 2PM, its 3:30PM. So I pull out my phone and show them the screenshot-- very clearly says 2PM. Well, they tell me that's too bad, whoever put it in their system wrote down 3:30PM, so I don't have an appointment anymore. They said Im "welcome to wait" until they can fit me in. So literally they DOUBLE BOOKED my appointment slot and then changed my appointment time without asking-- no checking to see if that works for me. Just TELLING me they wont take me even AFTER I literally showed them a screenshot to prove that I did have a confirmed appointment at 2PM. So I wait.....and wait....and wait.... over 45 minutes pass and now I can hear the vet through the door starting an appointment with the guy next door to me who got here at 2:30PM. YEP! You'd think once they realized their mistake the least they could do would be to put me next in the queue to be seen...but no-- they planned to let me sit there for 1.5 hours while they saw other people. Even though they knew it was THEIR mistake for double-booking my appointment time. Oh, and it gets worse! Apparently they don't realize how thin their walls are because I could hear the staff talking crap about me through the walls about how I "just showed up 1.5 hours early"-- again, this was AFTER I showed them a screenshot to prove that no, I am not early, I am ON TIME to my 2PM appointment. I ended up walking out because I cannot wait around all day. They never apologized or even admitted to their mistake. They acted like I was in the wrong for showing up to my scheduled appointment that THEY changed without asking me. Absolutely unprofessional and incredibly rude that I could hear them talking poorly of me through the walls for something that was THEIR mistake. I'm still so incredibly angry over this. Now I have to start all over again with finding a vet a booking an appointment like a month out to get my cat seen all because these people are so so incompetent. Zero stars if I could.
