This place offered my senior Tommy the best care ever! I have never seen my boy so calm and accepting as he was of Dr. Shultus. My boy is usually sedated in order to treat... not here! Tommy was so calm...and I am one very happy customer. The price was amazing and everyone was so friendly. I can't say how relieved I am. While there I booked an appt., for my Maggie! Such a wonderful, lovely experience. Thank you, Diamond Hill! ❤️❤️❤️I am forever bringing my fur babies to you. 🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛ - Sharon Lester

Location and Accessibility

Diamond Hill Animal Hospital is conveniently located at 1400 Main St, Lynchburg, VA 24504, USA. Situated on Main Street, a primary thoroughfare in Lynchburg, the hospital is easily accessible for residents throughout the city and surrounding areas in Virginia, including communities in Campbell County and Amherst County. Its central location ensures that pet owners have straightforward access to quality veterinary care when they need it most.

As an established animal hospital, Diamond Hill Animal Hospital typically offers ample parking, facilitating easy arrivals and departures for pets and their owners. Their operating hours are generally Monday through Friday from 7:45 AM to 5:15 PM, and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, with Sundays closed. These hours, including a convenient Saturday morning option, aim to accommodate the busy schedules of Virginia pet parents. However, it's worth noting that while they do schedule appointments, some client feedback suggests that wait times can sometimes extend past appointment times, which is a factor for pet owners to consider when planning their visit.

Services Offered

Diamond Hill Animal Hospital provides a comprehensive array of veterinary services, covering a wide spectrum of health needs for companion animals, primarily dogs and cats. Their offerings are designed to support pets through all stages of life, from preventative care to advanced diagnostics and surgical procedures.

  • Wellness and Preventative Care: Including thorough physical examinations, tailored vaccination protocols to protect against common diseases, heartworm and parasite testing and prevention, and general health assessments.
  • Dental Care: Comprehensive dental services to promote oral health, often including professional cleanings, digital dental X-rays, and extractions when necessary.
  • General Surgery: Performing various soft tissue surgical procedures, such as spays, neuters, mass removals, and other common operations, with a focus on patient safety, pain management, and post-operative care.
  • Diagnostic Services: Utilizing various diagnostic tools to aid in accurate and timely diagnoses, which typically include in-house laboratory services (for blood work, urinalysis, fecal exams), and possibly imaging like X-rays.
  • Pain Management: Developing plans to manage both acute and chronic pain, ensuring comfort for pets recovering from injury, surgery, or living with ongoing conditions, particularly important for senior pets.
  • Senior Pet Care: Specialized attention for aging pets, addressing age-related conditions, mobility issues, and maintaining quality of life, as highlighted by a client's positive experience with their senior dog.
  • Behavioral Counseling: Offering advice and strategies for managing common behavioral issues, often identifying if they stem from underlying medical conditions.

Features / Highlights

Diamond Hill Animal Hospital garners positive attention from the Lynchburg community for several key features and approaches to veterinary care:

  • Exceptional Calming Approach, Especially for Anxious Pets: A significant highlight is their ability to calm even typically anxious or sedated pets. One client reported their senior dog, Tommy, who usually required sedation, was "so calm and accepting of Dr. Shultus" and even "dozed" during the visit. This indicates a very patient, gentle, and potentially "Fear Free" approach to handling, which is invaluable for both pets and owners.
  • Compassionate and Friendly Staff: Clients consistently praise the staff, including vet techs and veterinarians (like Dr. Shultus), for being "friendly," "lovely," and providing wonderful care.
  • Fair and Transparent Pricing: Pet owners appreciate the "amazing" prices and the way they were offered "treatment options so we could pick what was best for our dog," indicating a commitment to affordability and client autonomy in decision-making. Prices on medications are also noted as good.
  • Dedicated to Pet Comfort: The clinic's consideration for pets' reactionary fears and efforts to make them comfortable (e.g., a dog falling asleep) demonstrate a deep understanding of animal behavior and well-being during veterinary visits.
  • Commitment to Client Relationships: The repeat business and strong recommendations, with clients stating they are "forever bringing my fur babies to you," speak to the strong bonds and trust built with pet owners.

However, some areas that future clients in Virginia might want to be prepared for, based on feedback, include:

  • Potential for Long Wait Times: A recurring concern is the "norm" of waiting 45 minutes or more past the appointment time. While this might be typical for busy animal hospitals, it is a point of frustration for some clients who expect timeliness, suggesting it might function more like a walk-in clinic in practice regarding wait expectations.
  • Inconsistent Staff Experience: One review mentioned a "rude" male vet tech, suggesting that while the majority of staff are highly praised, individual experiences can vary.
  • Medication Dispensing Check: A specific instance of a 6-dose pack containing only 3 doses highlights the importance of clients double-checking medication counts upon receipt.
