Dr. Schwartz is unnecessarily arrogant and brush on her first phone conversation. Based on her behavior towards me in our first conversation I decided against her as our behaviorist for our dog. As a mental health professional I know that she cannot adequately assess behavior when she does not have insight into her own.Aside from this main reason to not use her, she apparently sits on Zoom during meetings , let's you do all the work while she watches, gives you the reason why your dog behaves the way he does, and asks for $1,050 for 2 involved dogs she may not even see acting aggressive at that moment.Avoid this "behaviorist". - Patricia Folman

Dr. Stefanie Schwartz Introduce

For pet owners in California, dealing with a beloved animal’s behavioral problems can be one of the most challenging and heartbreaking experiences. Issues like aggression, severe anxiety, and destructive habits can strain the bond between a pet and its family, often leading to frustration and difficult decisions. In the community of Aliso Viejo, one professional offers a specialized approach to these complex issues: Dr. Stefanie Schwartz. As a board-certified veterinary behaviorist, she operates in a niche field that is the veterinary equivalent of human psychiatry. Her practice is dedicated to diagnosing and treating a wide range of behavioral disorders, aiming to help pets and their owners find a path toward a more harmonious life together.

Dr. Schwartz's services are distinct from those of a typical veterinarian or dog trainer. While general vets handle basic health and trainers focus on obedience, a veterinary behaviorist addresses the underlying medical and psychological causes of behavioral issues. This can include anything from separation anxiety and aggression to compulsive disorders and fear-based behaviors. Her approach often involves a combination of behavioral modification techniques, environmental enrichment, and, when necessary, medication. The goal is to create a tailored treatment plan that is humane and effective, with the ultimate aim of improving the pet's quality of life and strengthening the bond with their family. She also offers services such as pet selection, which can help new owners choose an animal with a temperament that is a good fit for their lifestyle, as well as providing guidance on house training and obedience.

However, potential clients should be aware that the professional experience with Dr. Schwartz can be mixed. As a specialized consultant, her services and methods may not align with everyone's expectations. Some past clients have expressed concern about her communication style and her recommended treatment plans, particularly her focus on certain methods over others. It is crucial for anyone considering her services to be prepared for a very specific, and potentially unconventional, approach. For this reason, it is highly recommended to have a clear understanding of your pet's needs and to openly communicate your expectations during initial consultations. Her practice is also geared towards addressing deep-seated behavioral issues, which is a different scope than what a general veterinary office might handle.

Dr. Stefanie Schwartz is located at 26895 Aliso Creek Rd, Aliso Viejo, CA 92656. While this is a listed address, it is important to note that her primary service model is based on scheduled appointments, which may include house calls. This offers a great deal of convenience, as it allows pets to be evaluated in their own home, where they are typically more comfortable and their true behaviors are more likely to be observed. This is a significant advantage, especially for pets with severe anxiety or fear of car travel. The service is structured to be accessible, with a wheelchair-accessible car park, entrance, and toilet, ensuring a welcoming environment for all visitors who may need to come to her physical location or for those she visits.

Services Offered:

  • Behavior Consults: In-depth consultations to diagnose and develop treatment plans for complex behavioral problems in dogs and cats.
  • House Calls: Providing convenient and stress-free veterinary services and behavioral evaluations in the comfort of your home.
  • Primary Care: Basic health care, including inoculations and deworming, for existing clients.
  • Diagnostic Tests: Conducting lab tests and other diagnostic work to rule out underlying medical causes for behavioral issues.

Features / Highlights:

  • Specialized Expertise: Dr. Schwartz is a board-certified veterinary behaviorist, which is a rare and highly specialized credential, making her one of the few professionals qualified to address complex behavioral issues from a medical perspective.
  • In-Home Service: Offering house calls allows for a more accurate assessment of a pet's behavior in their natural environment and reduces stress for the animal.
  • Holistic Approach: The practice considers a combination of behavioral modification, medical intervention, and environmental changes.
  • Tailored Treatment Plans: Services are customized to the individual needs of each pet and their family.

What is worth choosing:

For California residents, particularly in the Aliso Viejo and Orange County areas, choosing Dr. Stefanie Schwartz for veterinary behavioral services is a decision to seek specialized, expert care for complex pet issues. Her board-certified status is a key differentiator, as there are only a limited number of such specialists in the world. This level of qualification means she has undergone extensive training to understand the intersection of animal behavior, veterinary medicine, and psychology. Her ability to provide house calls is a major advantage for pets with significant anxiety or mobility issues, as it allows for a true-to-life assessment of their behavior without the added stress of a clinic visit. This can be the difference between a successful diagnosis and treatment and a visit that yields no real insights.

It is crucial for potential clients to recognize that a behavioral vet is not a traditional obedience trainer. Their work is often more involved and may require a significant commitment from the pet owner to see results. The experience with Dr. Schwartz can be polarizing, as some find her methods and communication to be direct, which may not align with everyone's expectations. It's vital to have a clear understanding of the services provided and to be an active and communicative partner in your pet's treatment plan. However, for pet owners who have exhausted other options with trainers and general vets and are looking for a highly specialized, medically informed approach to deeply ingrained behavioral problems, a consultation with a certified professional like Dr. Schwartz is an essential step. Her expertise in diagnosing and treating the root cause of these issues provides a valuable resource for those who are committed to helping their pet live a better, happier life.
