Extremely disappointed in this practice. I found them petty and unprofessional. I will just state what occurred, and others can judge for themselves. And please note, I say all this as someone who has worked at small animal clinics as a tech/assistant for over 10 years. I understand owner compliance and laws regarding prescribing very well. I have always complied to all recommended testing and exams, and always followed the laws and regulations that all veterinary practices follow. The issue arose after my horse was diagnosed with Cushing's and started on a pill. My horse hated this pill, we tried everything to get him to take it including crushing and giving in apple juice in a syringe. He hated that too, and it was going to lead to issues with not even being able to catch him.Unfortunately if your horse won't take this pill, the only other choice is a compounded form. It may not be as effective, and a medical rationale must be provided by the prescriber to justify why the name brand product is not being used. In our situation it made sense to try it with the rationale of the brand name decreasing patient compliance.EVH agreed (easily) and prescribed the compounded powder.Since we were switching to the compounded powder I price shopped and found it very affordable through Chewy.com. When I sent in this prescription request, they were very reluctant to fill it. They argued that their preferred compounding pharmacy was superior. When I researched qualifications, I found no extra credentials for their pharmacy while Chewy has gold standard additional compounding certification. I pointed that out to the doctor, and she reluctantly approved it. That was the first red flag, but I thought it had been resolved since she did approve it in the end. When that prescription ran out and the renewal request was sent in, they declined it. Nobody from EVH communicated anything to me about it. I only got notice from Chewy that the shipment was canceled. I called to see if we were due for something or if I needed to do anything on my end, and the receptionist looked into it and said, no, should be good to go, send in the request again. So we did. Declined again. Call again. Now I'm told, no, Dr. Randolph won't approve the compounded powder because he doesn't believe it's effective, and the other doctor won't approve it because she doesn't feel she has a valid doctor-patient relationship with my horse anymore since she was on maternity leave when he had his last exam.Keep in mind, yes, Dr. Randolph did his last exam and WE DISCUSSED HIM BEING ON THE COMPOUNDED POWDER AND HIM DOING WELL ON IT AND THAT WAS ALL PERFECTLY FINE WITH DR. RANDOLPH ON THAT DAY THEN AND THERE. But on the day I'm out of medication, suddenly he would only agree to give me more of the pills that had my horse not eating at all and running away from us.He tried to state repeatedly that it's illegal to use the powder. This is simply not true. Again, I'm very familiar with prescribing laws and the changes to laws around compounded medications. You must have a valid medical rationale. Decreased patient compliance on the commercial form (brand name) is a valid medical rationale. As far as the other doctor not wanting to approve because she hadn't seen him in over a year - that is fair enough, although I will say in my 10+ years I have never witnessed that type of behavior in a small animal practice. Doctors often authorize prescriptions for each other's patients, when it is needed. Or it would have been the least they could do (and still *completely* within all laws) for Dr. Randolph to approve it on her behalf since I was supposed to be her client and she had historically ok'd it.I was quite honestly dumbfounded by all of this. I obviously decided I had to leave this clinic since they clearly did not care about my horse, proper communication, or the truth. Dr. Randolph is a grade A asshole, and the other doctor I find to be extremely cowardly. They would not even approve a small amount, to give me time to schedule and fill it elsewhere. - Cindy Kolacz
