The Mid Atlantic Feline Thyroid Center is conveniently located at 201 Grange Hall Rd B, Queenstown, MD 21658, USA. Queenstown is situated on Maryland's Eastern Shore, making MAFTC an accessible destination for cat owners from various parts of Maryland, including areas like Annapolis, Baltimore, and even neighboring states such as Delaware and Virginia, as evidenced by clients willing to drive long distances.
Grange Hall Road provides straightforward access to the facility. While it may require a drive for some, the specialized nature of the clinic's services often makes the journey worthwhile for pet owners seeking the most effective treatment for feline hyperthyroidism. The clinic is designed to be a calm and focused environment, essential for a specialty center. For Maryland locals, having a dedicated facility for feline thyroid treatment within the state significantly reduces the burden of traveling further afield for this critical, specialized care. Its location underscores its role as a regional hub for this particular veterinary expertise.
The Mid Atlantic Feline Thyroid Center specializes exclusively in the diagnosis and treatment of feline hyperthyroidism, with a primary focus on radioactive iodine (I-131) therapy. They are a referral-based center, meaning they typically work in conjunction with a cat's primary veterinarian.
- Radioactive Iodine (I-131) Therapy: This is their core service and the treatment of choice for feline hyperthyroidism.
- Single Injection: Cats receive a small, precisely dosed subcutaneous injection of radioactive iodine. This treatment is curative in approximately 97-99% of cases with a single injection.
- Non-Invasive and No Anesthesia: I-131 therapy avoids the risks associated with surgery and the side effects and daily commitment of oral medication.
- Targeted Treatment: The abnormal thyroid tissue absorbs the radioactive iodine, while healthy thyroid tissue is largely spared, allowing it to function normally.
- Hospitalization: Due to the radioactive nature of the treatment, cats must be hospitalized in a specially licensed facility until their radiation levels fall to safe limits for discharge (typically 3-5 days, though it can vary).
- Pre-treatment Consultation and Evaluation:
- Review of medical records and diagnostic tests from the referring veterinarian.
- Assessment to determine if the cat is a suitable candidate for I-131 therapy, considering factors like overall health, concurrent conditions (e.g., kidney disease), and prior medications.
- Detailed explanation of the procedure, expected outcomes, potential risks, and post-treatment home care instructions for owners.
- Post-treatment Monitoring: While in their care, cats receive daily monitoring by trained staff, including veterinarians and registered veterinary technicians specializing in feline care.
- Discharge Instructions and Follow-up Guidance: Comprehensive guidance for owners on safe handling and waste disposal during the initial period after the cat returns home, and recommendations for follow-up blood work with their primary veterinarian.
- Veterinary Referrals: They work closely with primary veterinarians, accepting referrals and ensuring seamless communication regarding the cat's treatment plan and progress.
The Mid Atlantic Feline Thyroid Center consistently earns effusive praise from clients, highlighting several unique features that make the experience exceptional for both cats and their owners.
- Specialized Feline-Only Expertise: MAFTC is solely dedicated to cats and their thyroid health. They are the "only radioiodine treatment center in the region that is operated by a board certified feline specialist," Dr. Rucinsky. This highly focused expertise means every aspect of the facility and staff is tailored to the unique needs and comfort of cats.
- Curative Treatment (I-131 Therapy): The most significant highlight is their offering of I-131 radioactive iodine therapy, which is often a permanent cure for feline hyperthyroidism, eliminating the need for lifelong daily medication or invasive surgery. Clients express relief and joy at their cats being "cured" and no longer needing daily pills.
- Exceptional Cat Comfort and Environment:
- "Bird TV": Cats enjoy specially curated "Bird TV," which provides stimulating and comforting visual entertainment during their stay.
- Purple Walls and Soothing Music: The facility is designed with calming colors (purple walls) and plays soothing cat music, creating a low-stress environment.
- Feliway Diffusers: Pheromone diffusers are used to further reduce anxiety.
- Comfortable Enclosures: Treatment enclosures have separate areas for resting, eating, and bathroom, mimicking a more natural and comfortable living space.
- "Kitty Cam" Access: A truly standout feature, pet owners have "access to the WAZE camera app" or "kitty cam" to "watch Spooky when he was there" and "anytime I wanted." This provides immense peace of mind and connectivity for owners during their cat's hospitalization, greatly alleviating separation anxiety.
- Outstanding Communication: Clients consistently praise their "fabulous communication." The staff takes "time to explain everything to you and answered all of my questions," and keeps owners "informed and always in the loop," even with daily text updates and photos.
- Highly Compassionate and Caring Staff: Reviewers repeatedly describe the team, including Dawn and Stephanie, as "so helpful," "amazing," and truly caring about "each of their patients." This deep empathy and dedication to feline welfare are palpable and highly valued.
- Cost-Effective for Long-Term: Clients note the "very good price compared to places I’ve been to before for this injection," especially considering it's a potential cure, which avoids the "ongoing expense of pills" and repeat bloodwork.
- Fear Free Certified Professionals: Their staff are "Fear Free™ certified" professionals, ensuring that handling and care minimize stress and anxiety for cats during their visit.

Mid Atlantic Feline Thyroid Center Reviews
MAFTC treated my cat Spooky last week and I loved this place! Everyone I dealt with was so helpful and the process went so smoothly. You can tell everyone there loves cats of course! The price was very good compared to places I’ve been to before for this injection, yet, this was by far the best out of all these places. I wish I found you earlier!I loved the setup for Spooky. I know he enjoyed his “Bird TV” and you couldn’t find a better animal lover than Dawn, who took great care of him during his stay. I especially loved having access to the WAZE camera app so I could watch Spooky when he was there. A big shout out to Steph who coordinated all this! I met Dr. R who was very nice! Thank you all!
Mar 20, 2025 · Rhonda FonteWonderful experience with Mid Atlantic Feline Thyroid Center. They took very good care of my Amber girl. They were amazing from start to finish. Their communication is fabulous. They truly care about each of their patients. They take time to explain everything to you and answered all of my questions. The care they put into taking care of the kitties is phenomenal. I got to watch my kitty on the kitty cam anytime I wanted. I drove 2 hours to take my kitty here and would do it again. I highly recommend them if your cat needs this treatment. Stephanie and Dawn are wonderful.
Jun 26, 2025 · Kristine AI’ll happily write an excellent review for the Mid Atlantic Feline Thyroid Center. I couldn’t have been happier with my 13 year old boy Biscuit’s stay, the facility, and the exceptional care he and I received throughout the process. He is back home after receiving his I131 treatment, and he is a happy camper. He was diagnosed as hyperthyroid last month after noticeably losing significant weight for no apparent reason. Biscuit is a nervous cat who is hard to handle at the vet, and I was extra nervous leaving him for the required multiple day boarding and radiation monitoring. The staff took their time listening to my concerns and planning every detail of his stay. I felt very prepared and at ease in advance of our journey to the Eastern Shore and his stay (many thanks to Stephanie!). I received real-time updates throughout the day from his vet tech (shout out to Dawn!), and I could check in on him via video camera any time I wanted. The staff’s thoughtfulness, attentiveness, support, and care that they provided was outstanding (beginning from the very first initial introductory phone call, which was so thorough, easy to understand, and informative). Biscuit was completely back to himself when I picked him up post-treatment, and in fact, he already looks perkier and full of vitality. I eagerly await news of his thyroid levels progress in the next few months, and we expect a full cure! My deepest thanks and appreciation.
Jun 15, 2025 · Michele MutschlerOur cat Riley was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. After some preliminary research, we decided that radioiodine treatment was the best option. A facility in Catonsville was in close proximity to our home, but after speaking with the individual responsible for scheduling and explaining the process, we decided to look elsewhere.Based on the reviews, I contacted the Mid Atlantic Feline Thyroid Center and had the pleasure of speaking with Client Services Manager Stephanie Reed. Stephanie was patient, kind, and supportive throughout the process. She took the time to thoroughly explain the procedure, sent emails with detailed instructions, and was always positive and upbeat. After Riley was home, Stephanie called to check on his progress, further explain the posttreatment requirements, and answer any questions. She was amazing. On the day of the procedure we met Riley's caregiver Dawn. Dawn put our mind at ease by thoroughly explaining the treatment. She also told us what would be required to ensure everyone's safety after he was released. Dawn sent a detailed email explaining what he had discussed, and forwarded daily text messages to update us as to Riley's progress. She also sent a link to a camera, so we could view (and speak to) Riley remotely. Dawn's care and compassion for cats was evident. We knew Riley was in kind and capable hands. She did an outstanding job!Although the cost was a secondary concern, MAFTC was hundreds of dollars less expensive than the Catonsville facility. The entire staff at MAFTC is amazing! If you have a cat requiring treatment for hyperthyroidism, they are well worth the drive.
Jun 22, 2025 · Brian HI brought my 14-year-old Bengal, Loki, to Mid Atlantic Feline Thyroid Center (MAFTC) for I-131 treatment after he was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. I didn’t want his remaining years to be dependent on twice-daily medication. My research led me to this treatment option, and MAFTC stood out as one of—if not the—best in the region. For perspective, we drove nearly 4.5 hours from Pennsylvania.I liked the idea of taking my buddy somewhere where this specific treatment is their specialty, not just a procedure they happen to offer (as was the case with most closer options). I appreciated how proactive they were in obtaining the necessary test results from my local vet, as well as accommodating us with a later drop-off time, knowing we were traveling from out of state. The daily updates from Dawn were excellent, and it was comforting to be able to check in on him via the cameras from time to time. Steph was also very thorough in explaining the entire process—what to do before drop-off and what to expect after pick-up.One month post-procedure, Loki’s bloodwork shows his levels are back within the normal range. Overall, I couldn’t be happier with the entire experience. Thank you!
