The Village Vet Introduce
For pet owners and producers in Southeast Iowa, finding a veterinary practice that offers both compassionate small animal care and specialized large animal services is a key necessity. The Village Vet in Fairfield, IA, is a dedicated, one-doctor mixed animal practice that aims to be exactly that—a comprehensive, high-quality partner in your animal’s health. Established in 2011 and moving to its current location just one mile east of Fairfield off Highway 34 in 2016, The Village Vet, led by Dr. Michelle Burgmeier, DVM, has built a reputation for bringing excellent medical, surgical, and even alternative veterinary care to rural Iowa.
Dr. Burgmeier, an Iowa State University graduate, brings a wealth of experience to the practice, having worked in both mixed animal settings in rural Iowa and specialized equine/small animal practices in other states. The clinic's core mission is to provide personalized care that focuses on the long-term health of their patients, whether they are a new puppy, a beloved horse, or essential livestock. They strive to offer diverse options, blending traditional veterinary medicine with specialized alternative therapies like Chiropractic Care, an area where Dr. Burgmeier holds specific national certification.
The practice is built on a foundation of professional and personal service. Many clients express appreciation for the personalized attention, with staff often taking the time to explain homecare instructions clearly and follow up after crucial procedures, such as routine spay and neuter surgeries. They aim for every client and patient to feel like part of the clinic’s family, providing a comfortable environment with modern equipment like an in-house lab, surgical suite, and portable diagnostic tools. It is highly recommended that clients communicate clearly with the clinic team regarding expectations, procedures, and pricing to ensure a smooth and consistent experience, as communication breakdowns and unexpected costs have been points of concern for some clients in the past.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We took our little Murphy (a Teddy bear breed) to be neutered. Dr Burgmier and her staff took amazing care of MurphyThe staff called when he was out of surgery and said he did great. Homecare was explained well and he recuperated well. Great experience and we will bring Murphy here for his maintenance.
May 27 · Lori PadgetWe took our healthy, happy Border Collie to this clinic for a routine spay. After the procedure, she was extremely disoriented—so much so that we asked if she could stay overnight for monitoring. Unfortunately, the clinic doesn’t offer that option, so we had no choice but to bring her home. Her condition worsened quickly—she howled, whimpered, and seemed to be in distress or possibly hallucinating. Heartbreakingly, she passed away the very next day. We called the clinic immediately to find out what could have gone wrong but received no response. On top of that, we were quoted one price for the surgery but ended up being charged nearly double. We’re devastated by the loss of our dog and extremely disappointed in the care and communication we received. We will not be returning.
April 06 · Jessie PowersGreat doctors and techs, great atmosphere, great service and excellent price. The compassion, expertise and professionalism here is evident, but it's also a very personal and family-oriented space. Our pets have always gotten top-notch care here.

November 29 · Kelly DuncanMy dogs were seen by the vet Michelle and her helper Grace and they are both professional and very knowledgeable. When I brought my 11 year old Golden Retriever Katie to see Michelle for the first time for a growth that she had she explained every option I had and I appreciated her honesty and her compassion for me and Katie. I am originally from another state where most vet's care about the money!! The Village Vet cared about me and my best friend Katie and as long as The Village Vet is in business, that is where all of my animals will go!!! Thank you to Michelle and Grace for all your help and compassion!!
