For pet owners in New York City, especially those residing on the vibrant Upper West Side, identifying a veterinary center that truly offers comprehensive, compassionate, and expert care for all types of animal companions is paramount. Westside Veterinary Center, a long-standing and highly respected institution at 220 W 83rd St, stands as a beacon of excellence in pet healthcare. Since its establishment in 1985, this center, with key figures like Dr. Mike Marder, Dr. Cantor, and Dr. Emily Chang, has been dedicated to providing top-tier medical, surgical, and dental services not only for dogs and cats but also for the more unique needs of exotic pets, including birds like parakeets. In a city where finding specialized and attentive care can be challenging, Westside Veterinary Center offers a comforting and professional environment where both pets and their human families feel genuinely valued and understood. This article will provide a detailed look into what makes Westside Veterinary Center a preferred choice for New Yorkers seeking the highest standard of care for their beloved animals.
Westside Veterinary Center distinguishes itself as a privately owned and operated practice, fostering a deep commitment to personalized service that often sets it apart from larger corporate chains. This structure ensures that patient care decisions are made by the veterinary professionals directly involved, prioritizing the well-being of the animals above all else. Since 1988, the center has proudly maintained its accreditation with the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), a voluntary achievement that requires adherence to over 900 rigorous standards of veterinary excellence. This dedication to quality, combined with a team described by clients as passionate and caring, ensures that every pet, from a rescued budgie like "Cookie" to a cherished canine companion, receives the utmost attention and compassionate treatment throughout their health journey.
---Westside Veterinary Center is conveniently situated at 220 W 83rd St, New York, NY 10024, USA. This address places it firmly within the heart of Manhattan's Upper West Side, a dynamic and highly sought-after neighborhood. Its location on a major cross-street ensures excellent accessibility for local residents and those from surrounding areas.
Accessibility in New York City is a key consideration for any service, and Westside Veterinary Center’s position offers significant advantages. The clinic is within easy reach of multiple public transportation options, including various subway lines (such as the 1, B, and C trains) and numerous bus routes that crisscross the Upper West Side. This makes it convenient for pet owners who rely on public transit or those who prefer to avoid the complexities of driving and parking in Manhattan. For those arriving by car, while street parking can be challenging, the central location minimizes travel time, and many opt for ride-sharing services for the convenience of drop-off and pick-up. The facility is described as "always 'buzzing' with dogs, cats, etc. and their owners," indicating a well-managed flow of patients, and the friendly staff are committed to making the visit as smooth as possible, helping to alleviate any urban navigation stress for both pets and their owners.
---Westside Veterinary Center provides a comprehensive suite of veterinary services, reflecting its commitment to being a full-service animal hospital capable of addressing a wide array of medical needs for various types of pets. Their expert team handles everything from routine wellness to advanced medical and surgical procedures.
General Wellness and Preventive Care: This foundational service includes thorough annual wellness examinations, a complete range of vaccinations tailored to individual pet needs, and robust parasite prevention programs (covering fleas, ticks, and heartworms). They also offer microchipping for pet identification and detailed nutritional and lifestyle counseling to promote long-term health.
Specialized Exotic Pet Care: A standout service is their expertise in caring for exotic animals. Unlike many general practices, Westside Veterinary Center has veterinarians, like Dr. Cantor, who are highly knowledgeable and experienced in treating birds (including parakeets, as highlighted by a client review), reptiles, amphibians, and various pocket pets. They provide specialized advice on diet, habitat, and species-specific health concerns.
Advanced Diagnostic Services: The center is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic tools, including digital radiography (X-rays), ultrasound, and an extensive in-house laboratory. These capabilities allow for rapid and accurate diagnosis of a wide range of conditions, which is crucial for timely and effective treatment.
Surgical Services: A modern surgical suite enables the team to perform various procedures, from routine spays and neuters to more complex soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries. Patient safety and comfort are prioritized through thorough pre-surgical assessments and vigilant monitoring.
Dental Care: Recognizing the critical role of oral health in overall well-being, Westside Veterinary Center provides comprehensive dental services, including professional cleanings, extractions, and treatment for periodontal disease.
Internal Medicine Expertise: For pets facing complex or chronic health issues, the veterinarians possess deep expertise in internal medicine, allowing for the accurate diagnosis and effective management of a wide array of illnesses.
24-Hour Nursing Care for Hospitalized Patients: A significant advantage for owners of hospitalized pets is the provision of continuous, round-the-clock nursing care. Highly trained veterinary technicians are present 24 hours a day to monitor and comfort recovering animals.
Emergency Services and On-Call Doctor: While not a 24/7 emergency clinic, they handle pet emergencies during operational hours. Crucially, they maintain a doctor on-call for after-hours emergencies, providing guidance and support when critical situations arise.
Westside Veterinary Center distinguishes itself through several key features and highlights that firmly establish its reputation as a leading veterinary practice in New York City, particularly on the Upper West Side.
Exceptional Expertise in Exotic Pet Care: A prominent highlight is their specialized knowledge and compassionate care for exotic animals. As noted by a grateful client, finding affordable and attentive care for parakeets (like "Cookie") can be incredibly difficult in NYC. Westside Veterinary Center, with veterinarians like Dr. Cantor, fills this crucial gap, providing dedicated and expert attention for birds, reptiles, and other less common pets, making them a rare and invaluable resource.
Highly Skilled and Empathetic Veterinarians: The clinic boasts a team of veterinarians, including Dr. Emily Chang, who are consistently praised for their expertise, kindness, and ability to accurately and quickly diagnose complex conditions. One client's experience of a two-year misdiagnosis being resolved highlights the diagnostic acumen and dedication of the veterinary staff, bringing "active, alert" and "engaging personality" back to a suffering dog.
Caring, Well-Organized, and Friendly Staff: The positive impact of the front desk staff, technicians, and assistants is frequently mentioned. Clients consistently describe them as "kind and helpful on the phone and in person," and "caring, well-organized and friendly." This cohesive and supportive team ensures a smooth and welcoming experience from the moment a client contacts the center.
Comprehensive Services Under One Roof: The "array of services available at Westside, including care for exotic pets, boarding, emergency services, etc.," is a major draw. This comprehensive approach means pet owners can fulfill most, if not all, of their pet's needs at a single, trusted location, simplifying pet care management.
Commitment to Client Education and Support: Dr. Cantor's "instrumental" role in educating new parakeet owners and guiding them through the learning process exemplifies the clinic's dedication to partnering with pet parents. They provide attention to detail and kindness that extends beyond medical treatment to holistic support for the owner.
AAHA Accreditation: Their long-standing accreditation with the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) since 1988 signifies a voluntary commitment to the highest standards of veterinary excellence, covering over 900 areas of practice. This provides significant peace of mind for pet owners seeking top-tier care.

Westside Veterinary Center Reviews
I am so thankful for Westside Veterinary Center. Very few places care for parakeets and the one or two Avian places are ridiculously expensive and expected money upfront before I even brought my beautiful budgie "Cookie" in for her first wellness check when I rescued her after she was abandoned in an apartment for 6 days with hardly any food or water. So grateful that Dr. Cantor was able to see her fairly quickly and didn't charge me a fortune to do so. She is very kind, caring and professional. The facility is clean and is always "buzzing" with dogs, cats, etc. and their owners. The staff is always kind and helpful on the phone and in person. I've had Cookie for a little over two years and am still learning how to care for her because I always had dogs in my life. Dr. Cantor has been extremely instrumental in helping me and somewhat educating me about caring for my parakeet. I can't imagine going anywhere else and getting the attention to detail and kindness that my sweet bird and I have received.
May 01, 2025 · Gayle SommersWe recently switched to Westside Veterinary Center and are very pleased with our choice. Dr. Emily Chang is absolutely wonderful with our two dogs. She also accurately and quickly diagnosed a health condition which our previous vet clinic had been unable to diagnose for nearly two years (and which sadly resulted in needless suffering for our dog and thousands of dollars in fruitless expenses for us). Thanks to Dr. Chang and the team at Westside, we have our dog back. He is active, alert, and his engaging personality has re-emerged. We're extremely grateful. I'd also like to mention and thank the caring, well-organized and friendly front desk staff and technicians/assistants. We also appreciate the array of services available at Westside, including care for exotic pets, boarding, emergency services, etc. We highly recommend them!
Jun 15, 2025 · Kelly InmanWe’ve been coming here for a decade plus now for both my dog and cat and have always had a great experience with Dr. Rutherford. Someone in the neighborhood recommended her when I lived here and we have seen her ever since. She is always so gentle with our pets, our cat is never scared. Our appointments never feel rushed and she always takes time to answer any questions and explain things thoroughly. The front desk staff and everyone who picks up the phone are always polite and helpful. It’s very easy to schedule here.I have occasionally used another vet in a different neighborhood, and it has been nowhere near as good of an experience.
Mar 22, 2025 · Olivia LinWhile out of town my dog started to have a limp in his walk. I immediately contacted my vet at WSV and after arriving home on a Wednesday they saw me the very next day and performed the necessary surgery to repair Max’s torn ACL. He’s now recovering and am assured he should be fine. This is a level of care that keeps me a very happy dog dad and client of WSV. Thanks to all for your help.
May 07, 2025 · Rory PottruckAlways accommodating when making an appointment. Very caring environment and always happy when we leave! Thank you everyone! From the front desk to the doctors( Kantor and Rutherford) my dog always receives top notch care.
