Banfield Pet Hospital, including its Johnston location, offers several features and highlights that attract pet owners, alongside some common concerns raised by customers:
- Optimum Wellness Plans (OWP): This is a major highlight. Banfield is well-known for its subscription-based wellness plans, which bundle preventive care services (like unlimited office visits, vaccinations, routine diagnostics, and dental cleanings) into monthly payments. These plans aim to make routine pet care more affordable and predictable for pet owners. They claim to save pet owners more than 30% on preventive care.
- National Network and Accessibility: As part of a large national chain, Banfield offers the convenience of accessing pet medical records and services at over 1,000 locations nationwide, which can be beneficial for pet owners who travel or relocate within the U.S.
- Comprehensive Preventative Focus: The emphasis on wellness plans encourages regular check-ups and early detection of health issues, which is crucial for long-term pet health.
- In-House Pharmacy and Diagnostics: The availability of an on-site pharmacy and diagnostic equipment (like X-rays and lab work) allows for quicker access to medications and faster diagnostic results.
- Technology Integration: Banfield offers online access to medical records via their MyBanfield site or app, and for OWP members, virtual visits and 24/7 Vet Chat™ provide convenient remote access to veterinary advice.
- Standardized Protocols: Being a corporate entity, Banfield often has standardized procedures and protocols across its clinics, which can lead to consistent service delivery.
- Concerns Regarding Communication and Service Quality: Customer reviews, including those provided, sometimes highlight issues such as difficulty reaching the clinic by phone, perceived poor communication from staff or veterinarians, and concerns about the value or transparency of wellness plans, particularly when dealing with complex or senior pet health issues. Some reviews also express feeling that the business prioritizes profit over genuine pet care in certain situations.

For locals in Rhode Island, particularly those residing in Johnston and the surrounding communities, Banfield Pet Hospital presents a particular set of considerations when choosing veterinary care. Its main appeal lies in the concept of its Optimum Wellness Plans, which offer a structured and seemingly affordable way to manage the costs of routine preventative care. For pet owners who prioritize predictable monthly payments for vaccinations, wellness exams, and standard diagnostic tests, these plans can be an attractive option, potentially encouraging more regular veterinary visits.
However, it's also clear from public feedback that prospective clients should carefully weigh the benefits against potential challenges, particularly concerning communication and handling of non-routine or complex medical issues. While the consistent access to records across a national network can be a plus for transient pet owners, the personal touch and responsiveness that some local, independent clinics offer might be valued more by others. For Rhode Islanders seeking a veterinary provider, Banfield in Johnston can be a suitable choice for those who are comfortable with a larger corporate model, prioritize fixed monthly payments for preventative care, and are willing to engage proactively to ensure clear communication and detailed treatment plans for their pets' specific needs. Ultimately, making an informed decision involves understanding both the strengths and the common concerns associated with this particular model of veterinary care.

Banfield Pet Hospital Reviews
Nice people but they never answer the phone. My dog was throwing up and I wanted to see if I could come in. They open at 8am and I called 8 times and no answer. I left a message so we will see if they get back to me. I travel a long way to go there and to have no one answer to at least tell me he cannot be seen is unacceptable.
May 27, 2025 · Marc VaillancourtI’ve always had problems with Banfield but since I had been taking my dog there since he was a puppy I continued to give them chances. From extremely poor communication to their horrible traps that they call wellness plans. They claim you signed a contract to try and not let you out of the plan when I never signed or clicked I agree to anything. They jack up prices and then give you a “discount”. More recently I went with my dog who is now a senior and unfortunately found out he has some life threatening issues. I was encouraged to go do more testing to be told basically what they had just told me. I left with cough tablets for him that were useless. If these are qualified vet techs they why was no help given to my dog? The doctor didn’t come out to speak with me when I picked him up. I had to ask for a summary of the visit and info on his condition. No plan, and barely any info and I took my dog home to continue to be uncomfortable and possibly in pain. This is strictly a business. I regret continuing to take my dogs there all these years. I strongly urge anyone thinking of entering a wellness plan with them to avoid it and avoid this pet hospital all together.
Jan 28, 2025 · marissa IasimoneI sincerely appreciate the quick scheduling of appointments. But I now understand why it's so quick.... There's a hesitation to go to this clinic because the veterinarians give solutions to issues but don't actually explain them. They also take the animals to a separate room to examine them and give them vaccinations. Apparently this is a new thing based on their computer systems or something like that. I'm also very hesitant by the fact that they are not sure they feel comfortable microchipping a cat because the needle is so big.... This is kind of concerning and a red flag. But at the same time my animals has gotten the quickest flea treatment from them versus anybody else that I have called in Rhode Island. I'm very confused... The staff is great but the approach to everything is a little concerning.. Even when I read my dogs after visit summary... There isn't much information. It's what was given and that's literally it. As in vaccinations and medication prescribed but there are no details at all, of anything!
