VCA Atwood Animal Hospital offers several features and highlights that are important for Rhode Island pet owners to consider when choosing a veterinary provider. While client experiences can vary, common positive aspects and areas for consideration are apparent from public feedback.
- Comprehensive Range of Services: The hospital's ability to provide everything from routine check-ups and vaccinations to advanced diagnostics, surgery, and dental care means that many pet health needs can be met under one roof. This continuity of care can be a significant convenience for pet owners.
- Experienced and Dedicated Care Team: One review highlights a "very good care team for 7 years now," with clients taking multiple pets (cats and dogs) there, suggesting consistent satisfaction over time. This indicates a stable and reliable veterinary staff.
- Affiliation with VCA Animal Hospitals: Being part of the VCA network provides access to extensive medical resources, knowledge bases, and a network of specialty hospitals for advanced care, which can be a considerable advantage for complex cases.
- Online Pet Management (myVCA): The availability of the myVCA portal for booking appointments, managing prescriptions, and accessing live chat is a modern convenience that many pet owners appreciate for streamlining pet healthcare management.
Important Considerations Based on Feedback:
- Communication and Pricing Clarity: One detailed review points to significant issues with communication regarding pricing, particularly for technician visits, and a perceived blame-shifting between staff members. This suggests that clients should seek explicit price confirmations for all services prior to their visit and clarify what constitutes a "tech visit" versus a full veterinary examination.
- Doctor-Client Relationship and Trust: The same negative review expresses a perception of judgment and "talking crap about decisions" regarding a pet's surgery choice. This highlights the importance of open and non-judgmental communication between veterinarians and clients, especially when owners are making difficult or alternative healthcare decisions. While one positive review praises the "great" team, this negative feedback indicates that communication styles and client-doctor rapport can vary and should be assessed by individual owners.
- Patient Volume and Personalized Attention: As part of a larger corporate network, some VCA hospitals may experience high patient volume. While efficiency can be a benefit, potential challenges in personalized communication or perceived hurriedness, as suggested by one review, can occur.
- Pricing Transparency: The comment about being sent to collections and a perceived dismissive attitude ("well you don’t do anything else with us soo") implies potential issues with billing practices and client relationship management if disagreements arise, underscoring the importance of clear financial discussions upfront.

For pet owners in Cranston, Rhode Island, and the surrounding areas, VCA Atwood Animal Hospital presents itself as a comprehensive and accessible option for veterinary care. Its suitability for locals stems from its wide range of services, its connection to the extensive VCA network, and its convenient location. For many Rhode Islanders, the ability to address most of their pet's health needs – from routine check-ups and vaccinations to more complex surgeries and dental care – all under one roof is a significant advantage, streamlining their pet's healthcare journey.
The positive testimonial, "They are great! I take my 2 cats and 1 dog there, and it has been a very good care team for 7 years now," reflects a stable and satisfying relationship many clients have with the hospital. This suggests that for consistent, long-term care, VCA Atwood can be a reliable partner. The benefits of being part of the VCA family, including access to a broad knowledge base and potential referrals to specialized VCA hospitals, provide an added layer of assurance for managing more challenging or advanced medical conditions. Furthermore, the modern conveniences offered through the myVCA portal, such as online appointment booking and prescription refills, cater to the busy schedules of many Rhode Island residents.
However, as with any service provider, it's prudent for local pet owners to engage proactively in their pet's care. While one negative review highlights potential issues with pricing clarity and communication, particularly around differing opinions on treatment plans, this underscores the importance of transparent discussions. Rhode Island pet owners are encouraged to ask detailed questions about costs for all services, confirm the nature of each visit (e.g., tech appointment vs. vet exam), and openly communicate their preferences or concerns. By being informed advocates for their pets, locals can ensure a positive and effective partnership with VCA Atwood Animal Hospital.
In conclusion, for those seeking a broad spectrum of veterinary services backed by a large professional network and offering modern conveniences, VCA Atwood Animal Hospital in Cranston remains a viable and valuable option for maintaining the health and well-being of their beloved animal companions in Rhode Island.

May 12, 2025 · María José Guevara OrtúzarTook my male dog to this place for a check up and rabies shot made an appointment with the tech to get my female dog rabies shots. She told us it was going to be the price of a rabies shot as a tech visit we get there today and it’s triple the price and the doctor decides to talk crap about decisions on our male dog. The same girl who told us just a vet tech visit is putting the blame on another girl. Crazy how this places lies to you. When we told them we were having the dogs surgery from someone different then what this Dr wanted us to go to she did not like that and started talking bad about another Dr NOT GOD IN MY EYES. when we said your tech told us the price Dr said sorry about that we’ll send it to collections. Her (Dr) said well you don’t do anything else with us soo. Our dog isn’t due for check up till next month crazy, what do they want us to go for nothing and get lied too sad.
Mar 11, 2025 · Lucky13RacingDr. Monteiro was amazing. She took the time to personally call me, walk through my dog’s difficult situation, and offer thoughtful support. She was compassionate, knowledgeable, and genuinely kind. That said, the front desk staff made the experience really frustrating. When I called with questions about supportive care for my dog’s (who’s an established patient there) brain tumor, they brushed me off and told me to call a different hospital. No empathy, no effort to help, just quite dismissive. Thankfully the doctor herself was incredible and completely changed how I felt. But the front desk dropped the ball hard.
Jun 19, 2025 · Ash LoadholtMy dog went here his entire life, 14 years. I noticed a huge change in service and care after they became a chain. They do not care much about the pets and cared more about profit. I called numerous times for sick visits and they told me they could not take my dog for over a month. I ended up at Ocean state (which apparently owns Atwood) in order to get my dog the care he needed several times. My dog was on special food at times for stomach issues, and the secretary would fight me over getting his prescription food (Karen) when I needed it because he hasn’t been for his “routine check ups”. I had to call back and speak to a doctor and explain that because Atwood would not see him, I had to go to Ocean state where he got blood work and full exams.Atwood would call to check in after receiving details from Ocean State afterwards. No follow-ups or further steps, just checked in to make sure he was “okay”. Lastly, December 2024, I took my dog to be examined after having multiple seizures. They charged me hundreds of dollars and said he is fine. He passed away the next day. If I was to get another dog I would not take him/her here. Please find another vet that is not a chain and truly cares about the animals.
Apr 02, 2025 · Andrea DumicanWe’ve entrusted our dogs to this practice for nearly 13 years, but what once felt like a compassionate, community-driven clinic has deteriorated into a corporatized shell of its former self. Since VCA took over, the level of care has nosedived. Emergency appointments? Good luck. You’re looking at wait times of weeks!Standards have plummeted. Prices, meanwhile, have skyrocketed beyond reason, with every interaction dripping in profit-driven motives. The front desk, the techs, the vets—it’s clear the directive is upsell, upsell, upsell. I feel more like I’m being pitched at a trade show rather than receiving care for a beloved family member. What’s possibly most telling is the revolving door of staff. Some of the most talented, compassionate techs and vets we’ve come to know over the years have left. The turnover is staggering and speaks volumes about what’s happening behind the scenes. A place that once felt warm and steady is now cold, unfamiliar, and unstable. It breaks my wife and me to know that in our dog’s final years, we’ll have to uproot her, leave what should have been a safe and familiar place, and scramble to find a new vet who still remembers that care comes before profit.VCA, this is shameful. Do better. Pets—and the people who love them—deserve far more than this.
