CVCA Cardiac Care For Pets specializes exclusively in veterinary cardiology, offering a focused and comprehensive range of services for diagnosing and treating heart conditions in dogs and cats. Their team of board-certified veterinary cardiologists utilizes advanced diagnostic tools and therapies to provide the highest standard of care. Key services typically offered include:
Initial Consultations: Comprehensive evaluations including a physical exam, blood pressure measurement, and an in-depth discussion of the pet's medical history and current symptoms.
Echocardiography (Cardiac Ultrasound): This is a core diagnostic tool. It is a non-invasive procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the heart's structure and function. It allows cardiologists to assess heart size, wall thickness, pumping efficiency, valve function, and blood flow through the heart, helping diagnose conditions like congestive heart failure, heart murmurs, and cardiomyopathy. They are known for performing these tests gently, sometimes allowing owners to be present to soothe anxious pets.
Electrocardiography (ECG/EKG): Non-invasive measurement of the electrical activity of the heart to diagnose arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) and other electrical abnormalities.
Holter Monitoring: 24-hour ambulatory ECG monitoring to detect intermittent arrhythmias that may not be present during a brief clinic visit.
Thoracic Radiography (Chest X-rays): Used to evaluate heart size and shape, assess the lungs for fluid accumulation (indicating congestive heart failure), and examine the surrounding structures.
Blood Pressure Evaluation: Routine measurement of blood pressure, as hypertension (high blood pressure) can be related to or worsen heart disease.
Congenital Heart Defect Diagnosis and Management: Identification and planning for heart conditions present at birth.
Management of Acquired Heart Diseases: Including degenerative valve disease, dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), and other forms of heart muscle disease.
Medical Management of Congestive Heart Failure (CHF): Tailored medication regimens to manage symptoms, improve heart function, and enhance quality of life for pets with CHF.
Pericardial Disease Management: Diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the sac surrounding the heart.
Cardiac Tumors: Diagnosis and involvement in treatment planning for cardiac masses.
Interventional Cardiology Procedures: In some cases, they may perform or facilitate minimally invasive procedures such as balloon valvuloplasty to open narrowed heart valves, or pacemaker implantation for pets with abnormally slow heart rates.
Ongoing Consultation and Collaboration: Working closely with the pet's primary care veterinarian to ensure a seamless and comprehensive approach to cardiac care.
24/7 Phone Consultations: Cardiologists are often available by phone around the clock for emergency and primary care veterinarians, demonstrating their commitment to supporting ongoing patient care.
CVCA Cardiac Care For Pets consistently receives high praise from pet owners in Virginia for several standout features and highlights:
Board-Certified Cardiology Expertise: The clinic boasts a team of highly qualified, board-certified veterinary cardiologists, including Dr. Emily Westphal, Dr. Jess Weidman, and Dr. Ryan Peiffer. Patient-Centered Environment: CVCA understands that vet visits can be stressful. They offer features like "kitty rooms" where cats can roam instead of being confined to a carrier, and routinely allow anxious pet parents to be present during procedures like echocardiograms to soothe their pets. This focus on comfort greatly reduces anxiety for both animals and their owners.
Gentle and Patient Approach: Reviewers commend the cardiologists, such as Dr. Turner, for their gentleness and patience, especially with pets that may be uncooperative or anxious during examinations or procedures like echocardiograms. This skill ensures accurate results while prioritizing the pet's comfort.
Advanced Diagnostic Equipment: They utilize top-of-the-line echocardiography equipment (such as Philips Pediatric Echocardiography Units) and other advanced diagnostic tools, ensuring precise measurements and the best possible outcomes for pets with heart disease.
Seamless Collaboration with Primary Vets: CVCA is dedicated to working in partnership with the pet's primary care veterinarian, sending detailed reports and keeping them in the loop, often on the same day of the appointment. This ensures continuity of care.
High Recommendation Rate: Over 99% of CVCA families would recommend them, demonstrating widespread satisfaction and trust in their services.
Availability for Urgent Cases: They prioritize urgent cases, often getting pets in for consultations and diagnostics very quickly, which is vital for conditions like congestive heart failure.

CVCA Cardiac Care For Pets Reviews
Our cat had sudden onset congestive heart failure and was stabilized by our local vet, but he needed to see a cardiologist immediately. CVCA Cardiac Care for Pets and Dr. Weidman were absolutely phenomenal! They got us in the next day and were so kind!! Everything was very well explained and thanks to them we now have a lot of hope for our sweet boy. There was even a kitty room where our boy could walk around instead of having to sit in his carrier the whole time! I recommend CVCA Cardiac Care for Pets to anyone (any pet!) who has cardiac needs!
May 03, 2025 · Amy NolteOur soon to be 17 years old kitty PJ came to CVCA for an echocardiogram. He's a very gentle and easy going guy but we wanted to be with him to sooth him during the procedure as much as possible. CVCA routinely allows anxious pet parents to be with their babies. We can't say enough good things about his cardiologist Dr. Turner and her assistant Lynn. Like most cats PJ was not anxious to lie still on his side and wanted to squirm during the echo but Dr. Turner was very gentle and patient throughout. Everyone was so kind and understanding. Thank you all for accomplishing the test that revealed our boy's heart is in pretty good shape for a senior gentleman.
May 13, 2025 · Craig McGruderCVCA is top-notch in the care, treatment, and testing of their patients. The staff is upbeat, friendly, and ready to assist clients in any way possible. Dr. Emily Westphal is an excellent cardiologist. We are extremely fortunate to have her care for our Major!
May 14, 2025 · Kathryn RiddickMy pup has had a heck of a time trying to get a diagnosis, CVCA was quick to schedule us. Their staff is phenomenal and very friendly! We were greeted as if we had been patients there for years, Olivia & Dr.Turner took the best care of my girl.
