Damascus Equine Associates provides a comprehensive array of specialized veterinary services tailored specifically for horses. Their services encompass preventative care, advanced diagnostics, treatment, and emergency support, reflecting a commitment to the full spectrum of equine health needs.
Services offered include:
- Preventative Medicine: This is a cornerstone of equine health, including tailored vaccination and deworming programs specific to each horse's needs and local disease prevalence. They also offer routine dental examinations and floating to address sharp enamel points and other dental abnormalities.
- Emergency Medicine: Few things are as concerning as an equine emergency. Damascus Equine Associates provides emergency coverage, offering critical care for acute illnesses (such as colic, respiratory issues), injuries (like severe lameness, wounds, bleeding, or swelling), and other urgent conditions.
- Sports Medicine: For equine athletes and performance horses, specialized sports medicine focuses on optimizing performance, diagnosing and treating lameness, and managing musculoskeletal issues. This includes detailed lameness evaluations and advanced therapies.

They offer Digital Radiography (X-rays) for skeletal evaluations, Digital Ultrasonography for detailed soft tissue imaging, and Endoscopy for live video representation of internal organs. These capabilities are available both in their clinic and via their fully equipped ambulatory trucks.
- Alternative Therapies: In addition to traditional medicine, they offer a range of alternative therapies such as Acupuncture, which is based on traditional Chinese theory to address pain by stimulating energy flow, and Mesotherapy and Prolotherapy, which involve injections to stimulate healing.
- Dentistry: Regular dental care is crucial for horses. They perform dental examinations and procedures, noting and addressing abnormalities like malocclusions, hooks, uneven or missing teeth. Most dental work can be performed on standing, sedated horses at the farm or in the clinic.
- Pre-Purchase Examinations: Comprehensive evaluations of prospective horses, which can include radiographs, ultrasound, blood work, and drug screens, to provide buyers with a thorough assessment of a horse's health and soundness.
- Internal Medicine: Diagnosis and treatment of various internal conditions, which may include gastrointestinal evaluations (Gastroscopy, Abdominal Ultrasonography), ophthalmic evaluations (ocular ultrasonography), neurologic evaluations, and respiratory evaluations (thoracic radiography, thoracocentesis).
- Podiatry: Specialized care focusing on hoof health, a critical component of equine soundness ("No foot, no horse").
- Geriatric Medicine: Tailored care plans for older horses, addressing age-related health challenges and promoting their comfort and well-being in their later years.
- Standing Surgical Procedures: The clinic is equipped to perform certain surgical procedures on standing, sedated horses.
Damascus Equine Associates, while facing some mixed feedback, offers several key features and highlights that are particularly relevant to horse owners in Maryland.

This specialization ensures that veterinarians are highly knowledgeable about equine-specific conditions, treatments, and behaviors, which is a significant advantage for horse owners.
- Ambulatory and Clinic Services: They offer both on-farm (ambulatory) visits and in-clinic services. This flexibility is crucial for horse owners, allowing for routine care at the horse's location and more in-depth diagnostics or procedures at the equipped clinic. Their trucks are well-equipped with mobile diagnostic capabilities (dental, radiography, ultrasonography).
- Advanced Diagnostic Capabilities: The clinic offers advanced imaging modalities including Digital Radiography, Digital Ultrasonography, and Endoscopy, both in-clinic and on farm. These tools are vital for accurate diagnosis of complex conditions, particularly lameness and internal issues.
- Range of Therapeutic Options: Beyond conventional medicine, they provide alternative therapies such as acupuncture, mesotherapy, and prolotherapy, offering a broader spectrum of treatment options for various equine conditions.
- Experienced Veterinarians (General Expertise): While individual experiences may vary, the practice has a history dating back to 1979 and includes veterinarians like Dr. Peter Radue, who has been practicing since 1978. Damascus Equine Associates Reviews
I’ve met both the Radue father and son now. Both are arrogant and condescending. “Why didn’t you do this? You shld have done that. You should have had one of us out last night.” Yet I sent them many pictures of the abscess the night it happened.Radue didn’t find the culprit. More antibiotics and his next step was hospitalization. So I called my large animal vet. He came out. Dug out a 1.5” wooden splinter from her heel bulb and now she’s finally doing better and recovering well. Radue had no time cut away necrotic tissue and look for the source of the abscess.Would these men speak to a male farmer in such a manner? If they did, they wouldn’t have any business.
Dec 25, 2024 · Melissa JaneThey took great care of my horse over many years. And when she got to the end time, Dr. Welker, and Dr. Yerkes were honest with me. Also, I cannot say enough good things about Jenny, who coordinated everything extremely professionally.
