Local AnesthesiaHome » Pet Services » Local AnesthesiaIf your pet is having a minor surgical or diagnostic procedure performed, we sometimes use a local anesthetic to help control pain. For example, when we perform a biopsy (in which a small portion of tissue is surgically removed so it can be examined), we often use a local anesthetic. Local anesthetics cause a loss of sensation in the area where the procedure is being performed. We sometimes use a sedative and/or anxiolytic (anti-anxiety medication) in combination with the local anesthetic to keep pets calm during a procedure.

- Medical Assessment
To ensure a proper diagnosis, we often need to examine your pet. We begin a medical assessment by looking at your pet’s eyes, ears, and skin and checking his or her cardiovascular, neurological, gastrointestinal, and skeletal systems for any abnormalities. We will perform blood and/or urine tests as necessary to check your pet’s kidneys, liver, pancreas, and endocrine system, including the thyroid and adrenal glands. Based on your pet’s condition, we may recommend further diagnostic tests, such as radiography (x-rays), endoscopy (internal scoping), ultrasound, or biopsy. If you’re concerned that something may be wrong with your pet, please call us to schedule a medical assessment. Depending on the symptoms, we may ask you to bring in your pet right away.

- Pain Management and Control
We know the issue of pet pain management is of great concern to pet owners today. As in human medicine, we have a variety of medications available to manage your pet’s pain both before and after surgery and in the event of trauma. We would be pleased to discuss the options available to you and your pet under any of the above circumstances.
- Parasite Testing
- Patient Monitoring
We monitor our patients closely to keep them as safe as possible during procedures that require general anesthesia. A veterinary technician will continually assess your pet’s heart and respiratory rate, blood pressure, and other vital signs to help prevent any anesthetic risk. Please feel free to ask us about our patient monitoring protocol or any concerns you might have about your pet’s procedure. We’d be happy to discuss these matters in more detail.

- Radiology (X-rays)
When we need to figure out what’s wrong with your pet, we routinely use x-rays to help identify the cause of the problem, rule out possible problems, or provide a list of possible causes. We may also use x-rays during a wellness exam to diagnose potential problems before they become serious. X-rays provide valuable information about a pet’s bones, gastrointestinal tract (stomach, intestines, colon), respiratory tract (lungs), heart, and genitourinary system (bladder, prostate). We use radiology alone or in conjunction with other diagnostic tools. Interpretation of radiographs requires great skill on the part of the veterinarian.

- Senior Pet Wellness
Senior status varies depending on your pet’s breed and size. Smaller dogs tend to live longer than larger dogs, and cats generally live longer than dogs. We can help you determine what life stage your pet is in.Before your dog or cat reaches senior status, we recommend that you bring your pet in for a baseline exam and diagnostic workup. This will give us a record of what’s normal for your pet so we can keep track of any changes. In most cases, we suggest this checkup for when your dog turns 7 years of age or your cat turns 8 years of age. Thereafter, your senior pet will benefit from more frequent veterinary exams and diagnostic testing.
- Spay Or Neuter
- Spaying
Spaying your pet has many benefits. The procedure, which prevents female animals from becoming pregnant and reproducing, can help your dog or cat live a longer, healthier life. Spaying will not change your pet’s personality. By spaying your female pet, you’re protecting her against potentially deadly diseases, including bacterial infections, reproductive tract diseases, and several types of cancer. You also won’t have to worry about her going into heat. This means avoiding the mess that often accompanies the heat cycle in female dogs and the pacing and crying that happens with female cats. In addition, spaying your pet will help control the dog and cat overpopulation problem, keeping more animals out of shelters.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We had the best experience here getting my dog, Sammy, ready for international travel. The whole team went above and beyond to make the process stress-free. They didn’t just fill out forms, the front desk team (Sarah) even contacted the Mongolian Embassy to make sure everything was correct. That level of care is so rare!Sammy was really anxious, and the staff were so patient and kind with her. I left feeling confident and supported. Traveling with pets can be overwhelming, but this clinic made it so much easier. I’m so grateful for their help and would recommend them 100% to anyone needing international health certificates or just compassionate care for their pets.
August 22 · Tammy GanaaThe vets and the staff here are outstanding. We have been coming here for about 14 years. We’ve come for regular visits as well as emergencies. We are not just a number here. Everyone shows interest/concern. Veterinary care is expensive and I know people shop around for affordable care. I believe the prices here are comparable to other clinics. Once or twice we visited other clinics to either save money or because of an emergency and I will tell you that saving money is not worth the care or concern of an outstanding clinic like Eastside Veterinary Associates. The other clinic we visited was recommended but we were sorry we went (this was years ago). They tried to add services and they were not as thorough. They were also not as clean. All of the vets at Eastside are great and I am not picky about which one I book an appointment with. Dana and Sarah at the front are incredibly helpful. We have worked with Dana since day 1 and she is one of the reasons we fell in love with this place. I trust them and never feel like they are trying to upsell me. Six stars for Eastside!
July 15 · Ellen SneiderConvenient location and helpful staff. The Dr and tech were so good to my 2 cats. They were really helpful in ensuring my skittish cat was treated properly. Everyone was kind and helpful. The only reason I didn’t give them 5 stars is the parking lot is tight so I just park on the street. This vet treats dogs and cats. The barking outside our treatment room was scary for my cats. I hold my cat carriers close when I am in the waiting room in case a dog comes in.
June 20 · DM DavisVery caring and knowledgeable. From reception, technicians and doctors the listen and keep up on my pet’s needs. Dr Mahmood and her team are great!
June 12 · Wade WalkerI have been bringing my older cat here for years and last year added another cat to my little family who has been seen here as well.I'm an exotics/ER LVT for 10 years myself but I don't want to be the tech for my own cats. I get too anxious. The whole team here takes such good care of my cats and are so knowledgeable. It puts my mind at ease and helps with my own anxiety to know they are in good, knowledgeable and experienced hands.Dr Allodi and the whole team are so wonderful taking care of my older cat Jet who has dental issues. My younger cat Puffin came to me as a stray with a few issues and needed a surgery on a broken leg when I got her. Dr Allodi gave me some really good exercises to help strengthen her leg after her surgery. My girls will continue to be seen here as long as they are open. Thank you everyone at Eastside Vet Associates for all of your wonderful care and compassion 💙💙💙
