Emergency Veterinary & Specialty Services of Roanoke Inc Reviews
EVS took excellent care of my dog, River. They acted quickly to get him the initial care he needed and stayed on top of his care the entire time he was there (four days). I was visiting from out of town when the incident with River happened, and EVS went above and beyond to coordinate an internist for an ultrasound during his stay, which solved the issue of having to travel even further with him for the test. The team was compassionate, answered my many questions, sent me update photos, and it was a tremendous relief to know he was in great hands. My hometown vet told me that EVS was the best hospital River could have been at for his care. I agree!
Apr 23, 2025 · Brooke AOn 6/24/25 at 3 am I brought my elderly dog to this emergency clinic after she began showing serious signs of distress overnight—circling, collapsing, difficulty standing, heavy breathing, and clear discomfort preventing her from lying down. At nearly 16 years old, she had been declining for some time with mobility issues, incontinence, and a greatly reduced appetite and thirst despite our efforts.During the visit, the vet recommended running multiple tests to see “how she was doing.” I explained that we had already done thorough testing in recent years, showing organ function decline and multiple tumors. Despite that, I felt my understanding of her health history was dismissed, with comments suggesting she “could have gotten better.” As her long-term caregiver, I was trying to avoid putting her through unnecessary, stressful procedures in what was clearly a dying state. The vet ultimately concluded her symptoms were due to anxiety and recommended trazodone and melatonin. When I described her pain and the clear progression of end-of-life symptoms I’d seen before in my other pets, my concerns were further dismissed with a comment comparing euthanasia for a suffering animal to putting down an anxious human. No pain relief was offered, and euthanasia was ruled out.I work in the medical field. I completely understand that providers should not perform procedures they find inappropriate. However, I felt my dog’s condition, history, and my observations as her owner were not given the serious consideration they warranted. She endured another 12 hours of clear distress before our regular vet confirmed that humane euthanasia was the best option.I did not feel respected or heard during this visit. I sincerely hope the provider I saw reflects on how they handle these cases in the future so no other family has to watch their pet suffer longer than necessary because their concerns were dismissed.
Jul 02, 2025 · SkyVery grateful that the staff were able to help my cat, but the overall experience was not the greatest. We recently brought my cat in due to urinary blockage and while the staff was very kind, we felt left in the dark. I was amazed that he could not be treated until we payed the $2,000 deposit which we were told could go up depending on additional medications and tests. Our cat was brought in Friday morning, but we did not receive any updates throughout the day about his condition or surgery. We visited him that afternoon and staff was very nice, telling us that he was scheduled for bloodwork that evening. Around 8:00 pm we called for blood test results but were told the doctor was busy. We called back about 9:30 pm and were told the results hadn't come in yet but that he was scheduled for more testing later (?). We called the next day at 9:00 am and 11:00 am but were told both times that the doctor was still busy (this was after we said they could call in the middle of the night). We were very tired of hearing "no news is good news". We called again at 1:30 pm because we had no idea what his status was and finally a doctor picked up and answered our questions. They said he needed to be on the catheter for 36 hours (we had not been told before), so they would be taking the catheter out at 11:00 pm to see if he could go to the bathroom on his own since he had been eating more than expected. Since this meant he could be discharged, I asked the doctor to call us in the middle of the night as soon as he was ready to go and they said they made a note. Come 8:00 am the next day, we had heard nothing so we called back, and sure enough he was ready. I had to pay an additional $300 at pickup, but I am slightly bothered knowing that we had to pay an hourly holding fee for an extra 8 hours knowing he could've been home.At pickup, there was no opportunity to ask the doctor any questions. The staff also forgot to give me the prescription for his food and did not call to let us know it was still at the office (when I went back after being unable to buy food, the form was sitting on the counter).Ultimately, the staff is nice and takes care of animals well, but I would try to look at another hospital's pricing and communication in case of future emergencies.
Jul 02, 2025 · Alyssa MartinezI am so grateful for the amazing staff at this facility, and I truly can't thank them enough for their care and support. While the wait time was longer than expected, I completely understood the situation and the crisis they were handling during my visit. It was a difficult experience seeing other pet owners going through the heartbreak of losing their beloved animals. Despite the challenging circumstances, I deeply appreciate the staff's dedication and compassion. They were incredible in helping my Bear, and I am eternally grateful for their expertise and kindness.
Jun 05, 2025 · Brad ChaseThe staff is knowledgeable and compassionate. One of the vet techs shared with us that she'd had a similar situation with her dog the previous week and that all went well. She also explained what the first steps would be in treating Piper. This went a long way towards easing our anxieties. Their compassion towards their clients and their skilled care are exemplary.
