Dr. Widener has been my primary vet since about 2010 when my adventure with rescuing roosters began with a young hen that had been scalped by an opossum ended up in my care, and every vet I called refused to help her. My Medical Terminology teacher at SPSCC suggested Dr. Widener as her own primary vet for many years.Together, we were able to save the hen, and I've been taking my boys to him ever since. He's been an extremely valuable resource as I've learned how to best care for these wonderful creatures. I'm currently caring for a 2.5 year old boy with a thrush infection; almost a month ago, he was thrashing on the ground, unable to breathe. Today, I can't even tell where the infection was! Many years ago, I had a precious boy who became my service animal (alerted to panic attacks and seizures, then forced me to pay attention to him until I was in a safe state of mind), and when I came home one day, I found him with a deep puncture wound in his breast. Dr. Widener helped guide me through care as he developed a massive necrotic shell over his breast and around a leg. We were able to safely remove all the necrotic tissue, and he lived many more years with no noticeable damage (his feathers grew back, though there was some scarring under them).Together, we've saved many barnyard birds that I've been told by others have no hope for survival or recovery. We even provided end-of-life care to my most recent loss as he struggled through testicular cancer until he was able to "tell" me he was ready to go. Dr. Widener was compassionate as I processed the fact that after six years together, my boy was onto his next journey.I've recommended this veterinary hospital to many people I've met, and several have been able to follow-up that they've been grateful for the care their pets received, and on some occasions, he's able to offer sliding-scale payments, especially if you let him know you're low-income.Dr. Widener treats a very wide variety of species, and is a viable option for avian medicine in the South Sound region. I would strongly recommend anyone in the area with exotics or birds to consider this vet. And the regular cats and dogs, of course, but my personal experience has been working with Galliformes and Columbiaformes.Photo attached: My two current boys on a walk through the woods with me (Buddy = larger, speckly | Robin = smaller, solid colours) - Jeremiah Sullivan
