Grand Prix Equine is an ambulatory veterinary practice, meaning their services are primarily provided directly where your horses reside. While their administrative address is 143 Mt Pleasant Rd, Newtown, CT 06470, USA, their commitment to on-farm care significantly enhances accessibility for horse owners across Connecticut and even into parts of New York and Florida for specialized services. This ambulatory model means that their veterinarians come to you, arriving in fully stocked vehicles that function as mobile equine clinics. These units are equipped with everything necessary to perform advanced diagnostics, treatments, and even minor surgeries right at your farm or stable. This eliminates the stress and logistical challenges of transporting a potentially ill or injured horse to a clinic, offering unparalleled convenience and reducing stress for both the horse and owner. While their official address is in Newtown, their doctors are strategically located throughout Connecticut (including Bridgewater, Madison, Easton, and Granby) to provide extensive coverage for routine and emergency services within their designated geographical limits. For lameness and purchase exams, they travel even further, to areas like Massachusetts and parts of Florida, demonstrating their widespread reach for specialized needs.
Grand Prix Equine offers a comprehensive and highly specialized range of veterinary services, focusing on maintaining optimal health and performance in horses across various disciplines. As an ambulatory practice, most of these services are delivered directly on your farm or stable, utilizing their fully equipped mobile units. Their extensive service list includes:
- Preventative Care and Wellness: This includes yearly wellness exams, customized vaccination programs, routine bloodwork, comprehensive parasitology (deworming strategies), and yearly Coggins tests. They also offer nutrition consultations and geriatric care tailored to the aging horse.
- Lameness Exams and Diagnostics: A core specialization, thorough lameness exams begin with musculoskeletal assessments and gait analysis (in-hand or under tack). They utilize advanced diagnostics like Equinosis inertial sensors, flexion tests, and hoof testers. On-farm diagnostics include digital radiography (X-rays) and ultrasound exams to precisely locate the source of lameness.
- Advanced Treatments: Once lameness is identified, they offer a variety of cutting-edge treatments, including intra-articular injections, regenerative medicine therapies (such as PRP - Platelet Rich Plasma, A2M - Alpha-2 Macroglobulin, Prostride), Shockwave Therapy, Laser Therapy, and Mesotherapy.
- Chiropractic Care: Provided by specialists like Dr. Nicole, addressing neck and back pain/stiffness, difficult bending, weakness on one side, difficult lead changes, changes in performance, loss of topline, and improving general comfort for all horses, including geriatrics.
- Acupuncture: Offered by veterinarians trained in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) and Acupuncture (e.g., Dr. Luvie Abell), used for neck and back pain, lameness, nerve damage, anxiety, geriatric care, and internal medicine issues like gastrointestinal problems and asthma.
- Pre-Purchase Examinations: Comprehensive exams to assess the health and soundness of a prospective equine partner, including thorough clinical examinations, gait analysis with inertial sensors, and flexion tests. Elective radiographs, ultrasound, and bloodwork are often performed at the buyer's request to mitigate risk.
- Dentistry: Routine and advanced dental care to ensure optimal oral health, which is crucial for overall equine well-being and performance.
- Endoscopy: On-farm endoscopy for diagnosing conditions such as gastric ulcers, upper airway obstructions ("roaring"), soft palate displacement, nasal discharge/nosebleeds, and guttural pouch infections.
- Minor Surgery: Capable of performing minor surgical procedures on the farm, often on standing, sedated horses to avoid general anesthesia, including laceration repair, mass removal, cryotherapy, and castrations. Major surgeries requiring advanced facilities are referred to local equine hospitals.
- Emergency Medicine: Provide 24/7 emergency service to their full-service clients (horses seen annually for wellness exams and rabies vaccination), addressing common emergencies like colic, non-weight-bearing lameness, wounds, fevers, eye problems, choke, and nail-in-hoof situations.

I don’t have the words to express my gratitude. She worked closely with my trainer Jackie… he’s in a fantastic place now. Happy boy. Dec 13, 2024 · Heidi HutnerScheduled a visit with Dr. Rothacker in May 2024. My new horse was exhibiting some lameness and I wanted to have him evaluated to see if we could get to the cause. The GPE team was fast to schedule my appointment and incredibly prompt. They were conscientious of additional costs and verified with me before doing or repeating any exams by our general veterinarian. They took the time to work with me and my horse and answered all of my questions. I am happy to report that since implementing their recommendations my horse has been greatly improved. The lameness exam is by no means cheap but definitely helpful in protecting your investment.
