Highlands Animal Health Introduce
For Nebraska pet owners, ensuring the health and happiness of their dogs and cats requires a trusted and capable Animal Hospital. Highlands Animal Health in Lincoln, NE, stands as a locally owned and operated small animal practice committed to providing high quality compassionate care for companion animals. This facility is a comprehensive Veterinarian center, moving beyond simple wellness checks to offer an extensive range of services including advanced diagnostics, surgery, and Emergency Medicine.
The clinic emphasizes building strong, long-lasting relationships with clients, recognizing the critical bond between pets and their families. This philosophy is championed by the current ownership, Dr. Megan Behrens, who purchased the clinic in 2024. Dr. Behrens brings years of experience, including seven years in Critical Care and Emergency Medicine, ensuring that pets receive expert attention, especially in urgent situations. As one satisfied local client states, they love Dr Berhens & the entire staff, highlighting their deep concern for their furbabys health and recommending them to everyone.
However, as with any clinic undergoing a transition, some changes in patient experience may occur. While many customers, like the one quoted above, express happiness, a few others have noted changes since the ownership transition, with one customer expressing concern about the handling of their cat and a change in prescription food protocol. Prospective clients are encouraged to directly communicate their pet's specific needs and sensitivities during their visit, especially regarding handling and Medical Care plans, to ensure continuity and a positive experience under the new leadership.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1- STAY AWAY! This clinic is under new ownership. My cat used to love Dr. Smith, but he is no longer there. The new owners do not care about the well-beings of your animals. During my cat’s last visit she was handled very roughly by the vet and the groomer, and she hid for a day after I brought her home. After I let them know this, they cancelled her prescription food (for no reason) that was previously prescribed. This clinic does not provide the same care as when Dr. Smith was the owner. - We love Dr Berhens & the entire staff! They're always so concerned with our furbabys health. We've had 3 dogs all cared for by them and are always happy when we leave. Would recommend them to everyone. July 11 · Carole Becher
- We started taking our dogs to Highlands Animal Clinic when Dr. Smith was the owner. We had great experiences and excellent care for our dogs. Since the ownership has changed there have been incredibly drastic changes to the standard of care received, unclear communication on service charges and inaccurate patient record keeping resulting in not only double payment for services but also unnecessary, duplicate screens for our dog. When I initially questioned staff on this they were defensive and told me they didn't have record of the duplicate charge even though the invoice copy provided by this office clearly reflected that. After going back and having 3 different people review their records, they then determined that they could see this charge went through but on their patient records "it dropped off for some reason" so to them it reflected it had never been done. They did refund me for one of the services but still charged me for a discounted well exam even though we were just there in February for that same exam, to which we also paid for that service twice. This level of care is completely unacceptable both in patient record keeping and professional, clear communication with clients. We will not be taking our dogs back to this business again as the trust that they will be given the required and accurate care they truly need is gone. I did let them know we would not be back and was told "they were sorry I felt this way" instead of taking accountability for the inaccuracy. I would caution existing clients along with anyone looking to receive services at Highlands Animal Health to be vigilant in reviewing their charges and also pet records to ensure they are only receiving and paying for the services for their animals that they truly need. - This is a terrible place to go to for pets. The company refuses to fulfill prescriptions because they want to make an extra dollar. They sent me a message saying they would approve the prescription, but they have their own in house pharmacy. They were given the request Friday June 13th. They decided July 3rd that they will no longer fulfill the prescription. My dog is now 8 days past when he is supposed to take his medicine. They sent the written prescription by email, knowing pharmacies can not legally use a photocopied prescription. I am not playing into their Ponzi-scheme. They care more about money than they do pets. They are even trying to hide reviews like this with people like Pam giving reviews of here saying they have been going for 8 years, and also giving a review of another vet 3 years ago. Do not trust this vet. July 18 · Philip Kreutzer
- 10/10 recommend. Dr. Behrens was committed to figuring out what was wrong with our kitty and he's doing amazing now. Been a patient for 5+ yrs and would recommend them to anyone! July 10 · hb
