Sylva Animal Hospital Reviews
I took my cat for a new patient visit and got his rabies shot. I also had them trim his nails as he is a polydactle and his nails grow in spirals. They were very good with him and he now has a bigger head since they kept telling him how beautiful he is!

Mar 13, 2025 · Lyn Ellen BurkettIf you live in Sylva, Sylva Animal Hospital is a fine place to go for your pet’s yearly checkup and vaccinations. We’ve done so for many years. However, if your pet has an emergency, or is sick, you are far better off going to Junaluska. We’ve learned this too many times over the years. If your dog needs diagnostics to solve a mystery, go elsewhere. We brought our senior dog in who has been dealing with issues for a year. Strange behavior, possibility of panic attacks, and a sudden onset of coughing and hacking. We have five other dogs, and none were sick. Our dogs do not go to the dog park or socialize with other dogs. He had not slept in a couple days, and we spent a week of calling to get the appointment. On every call, it was explained that our dog was not well and we really need him seen. I was at work for the appointment we were finally given, so my wife took him.Knowing we’d waited a week to get in and understanding our dog was not in good shape, they were unprepared to do any real diagnosis. After listing his symptoms, my wife was told “I’ve never seen anything like this.” Unfortunately, the only diagnostics they would do is a blood test, and only that because my wife basically demanded it. We wanted an X-ray, but was told they don’t have time for X-rays today, but that we could bring him in the following week to do so. They then prescribed all the same drugs we’d already been treating him with, to no success. Plus, a prescription for dementia. Not a word about the coughing and hacking. No further tests. What they DID seem to feel was appropriate was to push vaccinations on him, stating he was behind, and they gave him a shot of Valium. That’s it. No suggestions on how to proceed, and apparently the cough was to be ignored.A few hours later when I returned from work, I found our puppy in the worst shape yet. He was panting and pacing and coughing uncontrollably. He would not eat, or accept a snack, and would not sit down and relax, even with what must have been total exhaustion from lack of sleep and the Valium. We watched him suffer and struggle to breathe for a couple hours before the decision was made to put him down.We relied on our vet of 15 years to help our sweet boy, and the best we could get was a vaccine upsell, which very well may have aggravated his condition and increased his misery. We all need to know our own limitations, and the limitations of those we do business with. We are finally coming to accept the limitations at Sylva Animal Hospital. We will continue to bring our dogs to them for simple checkups and shots. But moving forward, we will be taking sick dogs requiring diagnostics to Junaluska.By the way, it’s over a week since we lost our boy, and we still haven’t been called with the results of the blood tests….
Jul 09, 2025 · jeff guelcherThese guys are caring and hard working. They are always here for us when our dogs need help. Our old Jasper had a terrible bout of dog vertigo. He was just miserable and so we're we. SAH got him in right away and gave us nausea medicine and told us how to handle the temporary condition. He is up and active again after 1 week.
Jul 08, 2024 · Blair OgburnTonight I read a letter from the SAH. It was a sympathy card from having to let go of our sweet Stella (German Shepherd). We were not clients, nor was our pup. They welcomed us in our circumstances and helped with what we dreaded. SAH cared for our sweet girl with out knowing her. They were kind and very loving. The card was hand written by three employees including the Dr. I can't tell you how much that means to my wife and I. Thank you so much SAH!
