The experience at VCA Brentwood Animal Hospital is defined by a combination of professional features and the personal interactions that take place there. The following highlights are what make this clinic stand out.
Comprehensive and Proactive Care: The hospital's approach, as described in one of the reviews, is to be proactive about potential health risks, particularly in breeds like pugs that are prone to specific issues such as Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) and patellar luxation. While one owner found this approach to be overly aggressive, it reflects a veterinary team that is highly knowledgeable about breed-specific health concerns and is committed to preventing future problems. This forward-thinking strategy can be life-saving.
Experienced and Knowledgeable Staff: The positive review specifically praises Dr. Boyd for being "great at explaining everything." This points to a staff that is not only knowledgeable but also dedicated to communicating clearly and patiently with pet owners, which is a key component of quality care and client trust.
Integrated Services: The ability to receive medical care, boarding, and grooming all at one location is a significant convenience. It simplifies a pet owner’s life and provides a continuous environment for the pet, reducing stress from being shuffled between different facilities. For a pet with special medical needs, having their boarders and groomers aware of their condition is invaluable.
Commitment to Compassionate Care: Despite the mixed review regarding communication style, the positive feedback about the staff being "always so nice" and Dr. Boyd being "great" highlights a core of compassionate care at the hospital. This suggests that while their approach to medical advice may be direct, it is rooted in a genuine concern for the pet's well-being.
Membership in the VCA Network: As a VCA hospital, they have access to an extensive network of specialists and resources. This means they are not an isolated clinic but part of a larger, well-supported system that can provide advanced medical support if a pet's needs ever exceed the services offered on-site.

Choosing a veterinary hospital is a deeply personal decision, and VCA Brentwood Animal Hospital presents a compelling, albeit complex, case. What is worth choosing about this practice is its comprehensive and proactive approach to animal health. While some might be put off by what they perceive as scare tactics or upselling, a more charitable view is that the veterinarians are dedicated to preventing the severe, and often life-threatening, health issues common in certain breeds, such as brachycephalic dogs like pugs. A pug's health is often precarious, with a high propensity for respiratory issues and joint problems. A veterinarian who is not only aware of these risks but is also proactive in discussing them, even when it involves expensive preventative surgery, demonstrates a deep commitment to the pet's long-term health and quality of life. The consistency of positive feedback regarding Dr. Boyd and the friendly staff also speaks to a core of quality care and client satisfaction. For a pet owner in Virginia who wants to be proactive and informed about their pet’s health, especially for a breed with specific needs, this level of comprehensive guidance is invaluable. The convenience of their on-site boarding and grooming services, coupled with the security of being part of the larger VCA network, makes VCA Brentwood Animal Hospital a robust and reliable choice for a wide range of veterinary needs, from routine wellness to preventative surgical options.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Really 2.5 stars! Things started out well, I suppose. We recently got a new puppy. A little female pug. She is, of course, adorable, however, at every visit I noticed Olive, our puppy, would be wiggling away, waiting for love and attention and the vet NEVER gave her any "Hello Love". After attending a few of her puppy vaccination appts, I realized that I was really glad that I was not a first time dog owner and that I'd had a pug before. The doctor there tries to scare you into everything under the sun that could possibly go wrong and kill your dog. From the start, she's been pushing a nasal opening and palate shortening surgery that runs around $4000. "If I don't have it done, she could die any time she is out under anesthesia. It's hard for these dogs to breath coming out of sedation" The next visit, I was told her knee caps could pop out, it's a problem with pugs. But, she couldn't MAKE IT HAPPEN as she manipulated her knees, apparently trying to pop them out!!! WTH?!?! Olive is at a major risk of not being able to be boarded or groomed or blah, blah, blah because I refused a $79 flu shot, which was one of many to come. She almost seemed offended that I didn't want that for her. She cannot spend any longer than it takes to pee/poop outside if it's over 85 degrees, it's just too hot for them and they could overheat and die if out longer than that. I asked if it was okay for her to hang out with me while I watered the garden in the mornings...she approved as long as I watch her very closely.I would be absolutely terrified, if I didn't know what I was doing. Any time I refuse a service or a surgery, I am met with an attitude inferring I am stupid and should really listen to her, she is right and I am wrong. Coincidentally, the last time we were there, my original estimate was around $385. After refusing and discussing alternative solutions, things that weren't even problems yet, I ended up paying $235, and that included ear wash. Really read your estimate they bring into the room before doing anything to your dog. Most of the staff are friendly and dote on Olive. It's very close to my house and very convenient, but, I'm tired of being scared in to trying to have major surgeries and procedures pushed upon me. Pugs, as a breed, survive all the time without nasal passage opening and cutting out the back part of their palate, so "they can breath." And the amount of problems she's reported pugs as having, no one would ever get another one for the prohibitive costs associated with owning one.
June 24 · Kelly O'DThey are always so nice when im there. Ive been going for a few years and have never had any issues. Dr Boyd is always great at explaining everything for me.
August 14 · Douglas ThornAlthough a little pricey, I absolutely recommend vca pet hospital. I couldn't afford everything that my boy needed to have done but they worked with me and my first visit was free except for 10 bucks I paid for a collar. The second visit they gave me free meds for my boy and kept the cost as low as possible. The vet I saw was so nice and I could tell she really thought about what was best for my boy and that she genuinely cared about his well being. His prognosis wasn't looking good at all and I could tell it pained her to tell me so. Unfortunately my boy had cancer and I had to say goodbye to him. Vca sent me a lovely card that everyone signed with their condolences that I'll keep with my boys things. With everything said, I would rather pay a little extra to know my boy was truly taking care of and cared for as if he was one of theirs then to go somewhere else just because it was cheaper. Everyone there was super friendly and when I called I was able to get an appt right away, the same day which was very much needed so I definitely appreciated that. They all were very gentle and caring of my boy in his last days. Thank you vca Brentwood staff for taking such good care of my LoverBoy.
January 14 · Laura RobbinsAlways kind, attentive and caring for all my furry babies. Past and present.Still same great staff and care! There's a shortage on Vets in our area, so you may have to wait a little longer to get an appointment, but this team ifs worth the wait for the care your pet receives.Update, still caring for my sweet baby Coco! Almost 12 years now!! Always a pleasure working with the doctor and staff! Thank you for being there!
April 12 · Marcia PalletteThese folks are an 5 Star establishment all day! When was the last time that your animal yearned to go to the Vet? Tyga loves this team! We just call them the girls… and when he hears that term he lights up and starts moaning for his girls! The doctors are top notch and have great love and care for each individual soul. We went out of town recently and Tyga stayed there for a few days…and Tyga became very ill very quickly. They notified us immediately and gave us all of the options available…it was touch and go the first night but God, the prayers of the saints and Tyga’s Facebook friends from around the world brought him back to a reasonable portion of health! I said all of that to say this, bring your pet here and enjoy their great love for them. The address is 1236 George Washington Highway Chesapeake,Virginia 23323. They open at 8:00 am Monday thru Saturday, and they close at 6:00 pm Monday- Wednesday-Friday, Tuesday and Thursday at 7:00 pm. We will be smiling when we see you there.
