---VCA Old Canal Animal Hospital, as part of the VCA Animal Hospitals network, typically offers a broad spectrum of veterinary services designed to address various aspects of pet health. While a specific, exhaustive list from this particular branch isn't always publicly itemized in detail, VCA clinics generally provide comprehensive care. Based on standard VCA offerings and common veterinary practices, you can usually expect the following services:
- Preventative and Wellness Care: This is fundamental for maintaining long-term pet health. Services include routine physical examinations, age-appropriate vaccinations (e.g., rabies, distemper, parvovirus), parasite prevention and control (including heartworm, fleas, and ticks), and nutritional counseling to promote a healthy weight and diet.
- Diagnostic Services: To accurately diagnose illnesses and conditions, the hospital likely utilizes various diagnostic tools. This often includes in-house laboratory capabilities for blood work, urinalysis, and fecal exams. Advanced imaging services such as digital radiography (X-rays) and potentially ultrasound are also standard for non-invasive internal assessments.
- Dental Care: Comprehensive dental services are crucial for a pet's overall health. These typically encompass professional dental cleanings, scaling, polishing, dental radiography, and extractions when necessary to address periodontal disease and other oral health issues.
- Surgical Procedures: VCA hospitals commonly perform a range of surgical procedures. This includes routine surgeries like spays and neuters, as well as various soft tissue surgeries (e.g., mass removals, foreign body extractions). Surgical care usually involves pre-surgical blood work, anesthetic monitoring, and post-operative pain management.
- Pain Management: Recognizing the importance of comfort, the hospital likely offers pain management solutions for acute and chronic conditions, including medications and potentially other therapeutic options like therapeutic laser.
- Senior Pet Care: As pets age, their healthcare needs evolve. Specialized senior pet programs focus on managing age-related conditions, monitoring chronic diseases, and promoting quality of life through tailored wellness plans.
- Emergency and Urgent Care: While not a 24/7 emergency center, VCA clinics often accommodate urgent care needs during their regular business hours, providing immediate attention for injuries or sudden illnesses and stabilizing pets for transfer to a specialized emergency hospital if critical overnight care is required.
- Microchipping: This essential service offers permanent identification for pets, significantly increasing the chances of reunification if a pet becomes lost.
- Behavioral Counseling: Guidance on common pet behavioral issues, such as anxiety, aggression, or inappropriate elimination, can be offered to help foster a better relationship between pets and their owners.
- Pharmacy Services: An on-site pharmacy typically allows for convenient dispensing of necessary medications immediately after an appointment.
It is always advisable to contact VCA Old Canal Animal Hospital directly to confirm specific service availability and discuss your pet's individual needs.
---Based on the provided customer reviews, the features and highlights of VCA Old Canal Animal Hospital present a mixed picture, reflecting diverse client experiences. It's important to present these aspects factually, as inventiveness is not permitted.
- Mixed Experiences with Diagnostic Thoroughness and Treatment Recommendations: One review highlights a significant concern regarding a perceived lack of thorough evaluation and an immediate recommendation for euthanasia for a pet with urinary incontinence, without specific diagnosis or attempts at treatment. This contrasts sharply with a subsequent positive experience at another facility where a specific diagnosis was made and effective treatment provided. This suggests a potential inconsistency in the diagnostic approach or the communication of treatment options.
- Emphasis on Pet Advocacy: The critical review underscores a strong theme of pet owners needing to be their pet's advocate, standing up for their pet's right to thorough evaluation and appropriate treatment. This is a crucial takeaway for any potential client of any veterinary practice.
- Welcoming and Supportive Environment (Positive Experience): On the more positive side, another reviewer describes a "Great experience 5/5" during their first visit with a senior cat. They found everyone "welcoming and nice" and appreciated not feeling "judged or pressured with anything." This highlights a positive client-service interaction, particularly valuable for those seeking a new veterinary home.
- Financial Considerations and Transparency: A key positive highlight from the second review is the appreciation for the vet technician's effort to help the client "save money." The reviewer also notes that they "did not notice any difference" in pricing compared to other locations and considered VCA Old Canal Animal Hospital "reasonably priced." This suggests a willingness to discuss financial aspects and potentially offer cost-saving options, which is a significant positive for pet owners managing healthcare expenses.
- Suitability for Senior Pets (Positive Experience): The positive review specifically mentions a "senior cat," indicating that the hospital may be a good option for owners with older pets, as the experience was welcoming and non-judgmental in that context.
- Recommendation from a Satisfied Customer: Despite the contrasting negative experience, one client highly recommends the place, citing their positive first visit, welcoming staff, and reasonable pricing. This demonstrates that for some clients, the hospital provides a highly satisfactory level of service.
These distinct experiences illustrate that while some clients may encounter challenges, others have very positive interactions, particularly concerning client welcome, financial considerations, and general atmosphere. Potential clients are advised to consider both perspectives and perhaps conduct a preliminary visit or phone consultation to gauge their own comfort level.

Its convenient location on East Main Street makes it easily accessible for residents, simplifying the logistics of pet appointments, whether for routine check-ups or more urgent concerns. The accessibility of a local clinic is a significant advantage, reducing travel time and stress for both pets and their owners.
The provided customer feedback, while varied, offers insights into different aspects of the hospital's suitability. One review highlights a positive experience centered around a welcoming environment, a lack of pressure, and appreciated efforts to help manage costs. This focus on client comfort and transparency regarding expenses can be a strong draw for local pet owners seeking a veterinary partner who understands their needs beyond just medical treatment.

VCA Old Canal Animal Hospital Reviews
I am very upset with today's visit to this place. Without any specific evaluation or diagnosis for my pet, the doctor used a cheap excuse of convenience of euthanasia just because my cat had been going through a urinary incontinence problem for a few weeks, which had previously taken her to an emergency room near this clinic, they had prescribed antibiotics but the problem continued and I decided to take her to this much-talked-about place. The doctor wanted to put my pet down anyway at that moment, it was a bit irrational to want to put my pet down just because she had pee a little over her due to the problem she was going through and with the excuse that she was already advanced in age. How disgusting to see such mediocrity of poorly trained personnel just because my pet smelled a little bad. The saddest thing is that owners may be required to save their pet from a vet. Standing up for your pet is always very important. Well, that's what I did. I took my pet to an emergency room in North Heaven Central Hospital for Veterinary Medicine ER for a second opinion, and it truly demonstrated the excellent training and knowledge of the doctors and staff. They diagnosed the specific cause by performing a sonogram on her, shaved her, and prescribed the appropriate treatment. Within a few hours, she was back home. Your pet can't speak; you are your pet's voice and strength. Never be afraid to follow your instincts and do the right thing. But keeping quiet in these situations is also wrong..
Jul 01, 2025 · LizaGreat experience 5/5. It was our first visit with our senior cat in this location as we were looking to change vet. Everybody was so welcoming and nice . I did not feel judged or pressured with anything. Vet Technician was actually trying to find a ways for us to save money which i appreciated. I know that some complain that they are pricey but I did not notice any difference .I believe they are reasonably priced compare to other locations. Highly recommend this place.
May 23, 2025 · Sylwia CamposDr. Cesana has been our veteranerien for almost 50 years. I hope he never retires. All the members of the staff there are wonderful, too.Sparky still feels the need to hide in my purse. 😺
Jan 15, 2025 · Mary ColangeloI brought my kitten here last month, because the other place I have taken him did not resolve the medical issue he was having. This place may be pricey, but these folks are so nice and kind. All of them are. My baby cat is better. They were helpful in every way. I hope this place continues being the way they are and may they continue to prosper.
Apr 21, 2025 · CeciliaWent to the office today and very disappointed. 2 people walked in and didn't express to us who they were. I had to ask if one of them was the vet. Dr Green saw both our kitties and told us the 6 month old kitten has juvenile gingivitis. When asked what she observed to get the diagnosis, she responded "Well I am a professional." We weren't trying to doubt her but wanted to be educated. When asked about what we can do to manage the diagnosis she responded with no tips or other factors that would cause this juvenile gingervitis. The only thing was to wait until the cat was in pain or not eating to pull all the teeth. After consulting with other vets today we certainly now doubt her competence. Other vets said there can be extensive testing to see if bartonella is a factor or other possibilities besides it being genetics. The other vets said there are various ways to treat the disease with besides waiting for a cat to be in pain and not eat. In addition i mentioned a concerned about feeling hard pebbles around kittens jaw and she didnt ask please show me but instead said that she appreciated the body of the kitten and didnt feel anything. Would of been nice to be asked for me to show her my concerns to evaluate further from what I feel every day.She didn't have our kittens best interest. Will not be going back. Don't trust her judgement.
