★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I'm sad to have to write this. The vet visits I've had in the 2 years we've been with this clinic were ok. The docs were very nice, and my pets responded well with them. For any potential patients who are attracted to having a wellness plan, it's much more worthwile to just pay up front despite how expensive it is. The Care Club membership is money down the drain and a lot of unnecessary frustration. I used to go to Banfield and have an Optimum Wellness Plan, and if you've ever had any issues or dealt with them they are actually stellar in comparison-- and this says a lot.My most recent experience left me baffled. I scheduled an appointment online which only gives you the ability to write a couple sentences, and I was expecting a call back to iron things out and get it properly scheduled since this occurred over the weekend. This was scheduled after a chat with an online vet tech. Your online chats get put in to your pet's documentation, and my concern was for something minor but more preventative to check-- I just wanted to get it on the schedule so I wouldn't forget. The call back I received was advice to take my pet to the ER. My pet is not experiencing an emergency, and as much as I care for these sweet babies (like my own human children), if there was something really wrong, I wouldn't hesitate. In fact, the first thing I checked when we moved to the area was the closest pet ER.I asked why would the current on-duty vet suggest I take my pet to the ER when there are no obvious behavioral or breathing symptoms and it was explained to me that they need to do x-rays and make a determination what the issue might be. I asked if this was something they don't offer at this location anymore, which when I selected VCA Redwood I thought they could. They said they did but only on surgery days. I asked which days were surgery days, and didn't receive an answer since they aren't regular. Please make note of this as well, and be prepared that these services are very limited in availability, and they can't schedule future appointments for diagnostic imaging without speaking with the vet performing surgeries directly, they get asked whenever they're on-site next. With Care Club and this VCA location, the website clearly states they are an Advanced Care (x-ray, endoscopy, soft tissue surgeries) location and hospital. You can imagine my frustration when I was referred out to another facility (an ER) to get the same services at 2-3 times the cost of what I have been paying for already included with my membership. So in summary, I just had been referred out to the ER for a non-emergency, taking the time away from other pets that are having emergencies. A referral made without a preliminary visit or even a call back from a technician. In addition, getting billed monthly for services you won't get most of, and the ones you do, they'll still charge you for the same services within the year at "billed at full cost" if you decide to cancel despite how much you've already paid in to it.The receptionist heavy sighed on the phone as well, and didn't hide her snark either. Not very professional, and when you're dealing with the care of someone you love dearly, and some injustice-- it makes matters a lot worse. Take note of this VCA Redwood and do better.I made the decision to switch my pets care to another clinic and care that simply makes more sense, and that I can trust. For that peace of mind and ease especially during these times, it's well worth paying extra for.
June 02 · Naomi HMy pets have received good care from Drs. DeBroeck, LeHockey, and Hui; but there is a newer vet in the practice that I have had two concerning interactions with and, as a result, will no longer bring my pets here. As succinctly as possible: I have been bringing my pets here since I’ve lived in the area for the past 5 years. I brought my cat in almost two weeks ago because I noticed her skin was very irritated in spots and she just seemed uncomfortable. She had also lost a little weight. I spoke to the vet, he recommended treatment for her irritated skin and suggested blood work for the weight loss as I was concerned about diabetes or feline hyperthyroidism. Her blood work came back and, because the vet we usually see was out, another vet called me with the results. In that conversation, I was never told whether or not she had diabetes or feline hyperthyroidism, but I was asked a bunch of questions about her behavior and what/how much she ate, and then was told that her blood test results showed elevated white blood cells, neutrophils, monocytes, and eosinophils and this likely meant she had feline leukemia. I was stunned. She went on to say that I would need to bring my cat back for more blood tests so I made an appointment to do so. I wasn't able to get her back in for a tech appointment for a blood draw for almost a week. She also told me if the follow up blood test was negative, she would need further testing, such as imaging. I got off the phone, devastated, but at the same time, something about this conversation did not sit right with me. If the blood test was negative, why would she need more, expensive, testing? I wasn’t doubting that my cat could have had feline leukemia - of course it’s possible. I got her from a rescue that rescues a lot of feral colony kittens and I don't know if they tested her for FIV/FeLV; but I recalled that this same vet told me a year and a half ago, when my cat had an ear infection and her head was tilted to one side, that she likely had a brain tumor and that’s what was causing her head to tilt and she would need an MRI. I declined that at the time, opting to treat the ear infection with antibiotics and make a follow up appointment if her head wouldn’t stop tilting. (It did)I called another vet and explained what was going on with my cat, what I was told, and that I essentially wanted a second opinion. I was able to get her in with the new vet, and gratefully received an almost immediate result that my cat was both FIV and FeLV negative. She had also put some weight back on and her white blood cell counts, which were more indicative of inflammation or an infection, NOT cancer; were trending downward after treating the cause of her skin irritation.I felt, for the second time with this particular vet, that I was intentionally being given a worse case scenario up front to play on my fears in order to throw me off and be willing to pay a lot of money for very expensive, unnecessary testing. I understand and appreciate wanting pet parents to be prepared in case the worst is actually true, but to jump directly to something life threatening as the first possibility is pretty low and just feels like a money grab. VCA's fees are also exorbitant; my cat’s exam and blood work at the new vet were almost half of what I was quoted at VCA Redwood for just the FIV/FeLV blood test.
June 05 · Mary StringhamHave a new pup (Niko) and this place has been great so far for his vaccinations! The staff is awesome, friendly and very informative. They provide all the vet plans with no pressure to subscribe which I appreciate and lay it out if it would make sense for you which I appreciated! Dr. Hui (she's AWESOME and super smart) has been treating Niko with his shots and vaccines, and has been great with my concerns and questions I have as a new pup owner. Highly recommend and Niko loves coming here! (I kid you not, he's in a great mood after leaving here which is strange for a pup getting shots...speaks for the place!)
September 12 · Tom MThe staff at VCA Redwood are phenomenal. They provided excellent care over the last year after we moved to the area and helped us keep our boy in good spirits before he started having sudden health issues in February. When treating Art, they laid out all of the options as well as the likely outcomes and/or risks of each.We ultimately decided to euthanize him given what we did know, and the risks involved with the procedures. However, they provided a very humane and gentle service and I will forever be grateful and appreciative of the care and respect they gave Art.Thank you so much for helping us care for our boy 💛
February 25 · Angela LightA week ago we sadly had to put our dog, Angel, down. This was the most difficult thing our family has ever had to do. Her family was there for the procedure, including the vet that took care of her most of her life, Jim Lahocky. If your vet sheds a tear for the last minutes of your dogs life, he or she truly is a phenomenal vet. Jim was there for most of Angels life, they became close, and Jim's "bedside" manner always comforted Angel, through cancer treatments, ear infections, and the little things we found ourselves visiting Redwood for, which were many. Jim gets right down in there at your pets level and makes them feel comfortable. You can talk to Jim, and even though Angel had the corner market on their friendship, I felt Jim was a friend too, and that relationship helped us give Angel the care she needed. When I didn't want to face the fact that Angel had led a good life and was ready to pass, it was Jim who I took counsel of when I needed a more level head. Our dogs health was always our families top priority and if there were any questions, I always new Jim had the knowledge to steer us in the right direction. All of the vets at Redwood are amazing. I recall one of the vets, Maria Baker, having to have her dog put down and it happened to be around the same time as Angel was diagnosed with Cancer. Maria eventually had to put her dog down, and she gave us insight into what we would have to eventually face should the disease take its course in our dogs life. All of them are amazing... if you question your current vet, consider Redwood. I can't help but mention the front desk here also. Through the years they were always professional and always found a way to get you in as quickly as they could. What made them go beyond the call of duty was the day we had to put Angel down we noticed that a few of them actually cried. Those are people who care. The Redwood family was our family. Supportive, loving, and in the end, the best place to have our beloved Angel cared for. Thank you all everything you have done.
