Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
For pet owners throughout New Jersey, particularly those in Rutherford and the broader Bergen County area, VCA Rutherford Animal Hospital offers a comprehensive and multifaceted option for their veterinary care needs. Its AAHA accreditation signifies a commitment to high standards across numerous aspects of veterinary practice, providing a strong baseline of quality for local users. The hospital's extensive list of services, covering everything from advanced dental and orthopedic surgery to cardiology, oncology, boarding, grooming, and even alternative medicine, means that most pet health requirements can be addressed under one roof, offering unparalleled convenience. The positive account of Dr. Sing's early detection of a heart murmur and the subsequent proactive care leading to a pet's continued thriving demonstrates the potential for excellent, life-extending medical outcomes. Furthermore, the practice's routine "next-day check-ins after emergent visits" reflects a commendable level of ongoing patient concern and dedication. However, it is crucial for local users to consider the significant contrasting experience detailed in another review. The account of a pet owner feeling "overwhelmed with fear" and met with "rushed, emotionally disconnected, and completely dismissive" care, culminating in a lack of "guidance or support" during a critical and ultimately heartbreaking situation, highlights serious concerns regarding communication, empathy, and consistent care quality across the practice. While some experiences are clearly positive and demonstrate high-level medical care, the severe negative feedback suggests that the consistency of compassionate client interaction and urgent care responsiveness may vary. For New Jersey residents, VCA Rutherford Animal Hospital presents a wide array of services and advanced medical capabilities, which can be highly beneficial for routine and complex cases alike. However, it is essential to weigh these extensive offerings against the reported inconsistencies in compassionate care and communication, especially during highly sensitive and critical situations, to determine if it aligns with their personal expectations for their pet's veterinary journey.

VCA Rutherford Animal Hospital Reviews
We have been coming to Rutherford Animal Hospital for almost 12 years. They have always taken amazing care of my little fur babies for routine exams and emergencies alike. They even check in next day to ensure that they are ok after emergent visits and with 3, we have a lot of these! 2 years ago, Dr. Sing identified a murmur in my then 10 year old pup. She got her in for all of the necessary tests almost immediately which gave us a speedy diagnosis and allowed us to start meds right away. Because of early detection and proactive care, my Zoey (who based on statistics should be in full blown CHF at this point) is thriving! The staff is always patient and pleasant and we will never go anywhere else!!!
Jun 10, 2025 · Deb BrouIf I could leave zero stars, I would.I brought my cat Sasha in because she was breathing heavily and I knew something was wrong. From the beginning, I was overwhelmed with fear, and instead of support or reassurance, I was met with care that was rushed, emotionally disconnected, and completely dismissive. Before any testing was even done, the vet told me it sounded like heart failure. That kind of statement, given without evidence, sent me into panic and left me thinking I might lose my cat that day. After they ran X-rays and bloodwork, the story shifted to “most likely asthma.” They prescribed prednisone and clavamox, said she seemed stable enough to go home, and told me we could revisit the idea of an inhaler after the doctor returned from vacation. That alone felt careless. If you believed she needed it, why would you hold off for a vacation?I followed the treatment plan, but by Saturday Sasha had stopped eating, drinking, and moving. I rushed her to an emergency vet, who stabilized her, gave her additional medication, and kept her in an oxygen chamber. On Sunday, she still wasn’t improving. By Monday morning, I called this office again, desperate for help. I was seen by a different doctor. She didn’t properly introduce herself, barely made eye contact, and showed no compassion. I was crying in the room trying to explain what had been going on, and she simply told me there was nothing more they could do. She gave me a referral and dismissed me completely. No real explanation, no effort, no urgency, no emotional support.Later that same day, I brought Sasha to Eclipse in Whippany, the facility they referred me to. I want to be clear that the only good thing this vet did in this entire experience was give me that referral. Eclipse took Sasha in as a critical patient immediately. Within minutes, they reviewed the exact same records this office had and explained everything clearly and compassionately. They told me Sasha had severe, irreversible lung scarring from chronic asthma. They helped me understand that no treatment would fix it, and that euthanasia would be the kindest and most humane option. I was finally told the truth, with care and empathy, and given the space to make that heartbreaking decision without being rushed.Eclipse gave Sasha the peaceful, loving sendoff she deserved. They made her last moments warm, quiet, and full of dignity. I will never forget the way they honored her life. But I will also never forget how this practice failed us. Sasha spent her final days struggling, and I spent them confused and scared because I was never given the guidance or support I needed. Your team had multiple chances to act with care and urgency, and you didn’t. You pushed me off, you showed no empathy, and you left me to figure it all out on my own.You failed her. And you failed me.I will never return, and I would never recommend your practice to anyone.
Jun 10, 2025 · DeeI recently took my 10-year-old senior cat for a teeth cleaning. Sherrill at the front desk checked us in and was extremely friendly. I was updated throughout the entire procedure. They followed up the next day to make sure my kitty was OK. Major shout out to Katie!! She’s always there and extremely compassionate and reassuring! I was very satisfied with my cat’s care. I have taken her for dental cleanings at other places, I felt much more comfortable, taking her here based on proximity and quality of care.
Jan 13, 2025 · Kristine GaalWe are deeply dissatisfied with the care and expertise shown by this hospital. We have been bringing our 8.5-year-old golden retriever here ever since we got him. Recently, our puppy started limping, and we took him in for a check-up. The staff immediately diagnosed arthritis and pushed arthritis medication on us. Even though we expressed our concerns about more serious conditions, we were ignored and convinced to pay for arthritis medication, which forced us to delay one of the medications for his actual disease. They only took imaging and blood work after we insisted, by which time his condition was worsening. They claimed they found nothing. As his condition continued to decline, we took him to another hospital. Within hours, they diagnosed him with cancer after doing blood work and imaging. This experience taught us the importance of seeking a second opinion. The lack of care and expertise shown by this hospital is unacceptable. Please, do not rely solely on their word; always seek a second opinion for your pet's health.
Jun 26, 2024 · Carolina MartinsWhat an experience! I've had cats my whole life and I've been to many vets through the years. This was a whole new experience. My senior kitty wasn't feeling well and went in for a check up. Dr. Calle and staff went above and beyond. They answered all my questions in detail, even a few times if I didn't understand. They were so patient and very gentle with my sick kitty. She had to have blood taken and a few other very uncomfortable procedures. They wrapped her up in a blanket and gave me Churus to feed her while they did their work. This method worked like a miracle. For the first time ever my cat wasn't traumatized from a vet visit. She didn't seem to mind what they were doing to her as long as she got some tasty Churu. Also would like to add they have very flexible hours. They have a treatment plan so I was able to choose what needs to be done immediately and what can wait, depending on my budget, another huge help. Also seeing all the treatments before paying so I can ask questions and fully understand what's being done was so helpful. Thanks Dr. Calle and all the staff, thank you!! Here is a pic of my kitty feeling like her self again.
