Animal Eye Care Center specializes exclusively in veterinary ophthalmology, offering a comprehensive suite of diagnostic and treatment services focused solely on the eyes and associated structures of animals. Their highly specialized offerings include:
- Comprehensive Ophthalmic Examinations: Detailed examination of all parts of the eye, including the front (using a slit lamp biomicroscope) and back (using indirect ophthalmoscopy), to thoroughly assess eye health and identify specific issues. This often includes initial diagnostic tests like Schirmer tear test, tonometry (eye pressure measurement), and fluorescein staining.
- Diagnosis and Treatment of Corneal Ulcers: Expert care for corneal abrasions and ulcers, ranging from medication to surgical intervention like tissue grafting for deep or melting ulcers, as highlighted in a customer review where a severe ulcer was successfully treated.
- Cataract Evaluation and Surgery: Thorough assessment for cataracts, including specialized examinations to determine suitability for surgery and advanced surgical removal with potential lens replacement.
- Glaucoma Management: Diagnosis and medical/surgical management of glaucoma to control intraocular pressure and preserve vision.
- Dry Eye (Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca - KCS) Treatment: Specialized care for conditions like severe dry eyes, as demonstrated by the case of Pluto, where proper medication restored vision.
- Eyelid and Eyelash Abnormalities: Diagnosis and surgical correction of conditions like entropion, ectropion, distichiasis, or ectopic cilia (abnormal eyelashes irritating the eye), which can cause significant discomfort and vision problems.
- Ocular Tumors and Growths: Diagnosis and treatment (medical or surgical) of various tumors affecting the eye or surrounding structures.
- Ocular Ultrasonography and Electroretinography (ERG): Advanced diagnostic tools used to evaluate the internal structures of the eye when visualization is difficult, or to assess retinal function, crucial for conditions like sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome (SARDS) or inherited retinal diseases.
- Refraction (Streak Retinoscopy): To determine the refractive error of the eye.
- Collaboration with Referring Veterinarians: A core component of their service, involving detailed referral letters with exam findings, diagnoses, treatment plans, and diagnostic test results faxed or emailed to the referring veterinarian before the client leaves the office, ensuring seamless continuity of care.
Animal Eye Care Center consistently receives accolades from clients, underscoring several key aspects of their practice:
- Board-Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist: The presence of a highly qualified, board-certified specialist like Dr. Eric Smith is a major highlight. Dr. Smith established the center in 1995 and is frequently recognized as one of the region's "Best Veterinary Ophthalmologists," indicating a profound level of expertise and experience in the field. This specialization is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of complex eye conditions.
- Precise and Accurate Diagnosis: Clients laud the ability of Dr. Smith and his team to correctly diagnose conditions, even when primary vets have struggled. The case of Benjamin Button (scratched eye becoming an ulcer) and Pluto (diagnosed with severe dry eye instead of blindness) exemplify their diagnostic precision.
- Effective Treatment and Positive Outcomes: The rapid and significant improvement in pets' conditions after treatment is a recurring theme. Benjamin Button's recovery from an ulcer and Pluto regaining sight within days highlight the efficacy of their prescribed medications and procedures.
- Compassionate and Kind Approach: The staff, including Dr. Smith, are consistently described as "kind, calm, and knowledgeable." Clients appreciate the gentle manner in which their pets are handled, which helps reduce stress during examinations and procedures.
- Thorough Explanations and Communication: Reviewers note that the vet "explained everything thoroughly," ensuring pet owners understand the diagnosis, treatment plan, and follow-up care. This transparency builds trust and empowers pet parents.
- Reasonable Pricing: One client specifically mentioned that the prices were "extremely reasonable," especially considering the specialized nature of the care, which can be a significant relief for pet owners facing unexpected medical costs.
- Efficient and Organized Practice: While appointments might require a few weeks' wait due to high demand, the clinic is described as well-organized, ensuring a smooth process once you are in. They are sensitive to client time and strive to minimize waiting periods.
- Dedicated Referral-Only Focus: As a referral-only practice, they are uniquely positioned to handle serious or difficult eye issues that general practitioners might not have the specialized tools or expertise for, making them a crucial extension of your pet's overall healthcare team.

Jun 17, 2025 · Ray TaylorI can't speak highly enough about Dr. Eric Smith and his staff. I was told my 13 year old Clumber Spaniel was totally blind. My boy was really struggling.I got an appointment with Dr. Smith for Pluto.Thinking nothing could be done.Well my dog wasnt blind at all. He was producing tears and a severe case of dry eyes with his eyelashes irritating his eyes. Dr. Smith was kind, calm, and knowledable. He knew exactly what the problem was and 4 days later, with the appropriate medications my dog can see and is almost back to normal. We are astounded. His prices are extremly reasonable.I highly recommend this practice. They really know what they are doing and care about the pets outcome. You may wait a few weeks to get in for an appointment.

Aug 08, 2024 · Karin GwinDr. Smith is the absolute best. He was so knowledgeable, empathetic, and a true advocate for my cat Molly. When my local vets ran the wrong test, Dr. Smith and his office were on it and had my local vet redo it. I thought my cat had a fatal disease (FIP) due to my local vets giving me incorrect information from a different test, but by reviewing the test results from my local vets and double checking their work, he was able to confirm his suspicion that she is healthy. This was so important to me after going a week or two thinking my cat was not going to make it (and it only took that long because at the time Dr. Smith was out of office for a week or two, maybe for a vacation), but the day he came back from vacation he called me immediately to let me know that the wrong test had been done by the other vet and that he truly didn’t think she had FIP but he’d have them run the right test just to be sure, and he was right - she’s fine. He also went over the pros and cons of taking her eye out and the consequences for each so I could make an informed decision. He even gave me a call afterwards to make sure she was doing well after the testing issue was rectified. All around fantastic vet. Definitely the best of the best and 100% worth it. So glad I was able to work with Dr. Smith and his staff!
