We brought our 6 yr old Katahoula, Heidi in for treatment- she was in serious condition and we found out later, near death. She was diagnosed with Evans disease which really messed up her immune system. Her urine was deep red in color and her skin was yellow with jaundice. They began treatment which included a tranfusion and medication and constant monitoring. The staff was fantastic, Dr. Hillock was a saviour. Heidi began responding to the treatment slowly and after after a week came home to us in time for Thanksgiving - so after 3 years she is 110% and doing great. We brought her back for checkups in the year following and we were always treated well and from what I could tell, so we're the other patents and owners in the waiting room. The cost was high but it was worth every dollar to get her back home and not have to put her down at her young age. She is so full of love and appreciation as well.Thank you VCMLI. - K Fedup

The Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island (VMCLI) provides a broad spectrum of services, emphasizing emergency and specialty care. As a multi-specialty referral practice, they offer advanced diagnostics and treatments that go beyond what a primary care veterinarian might provide.

  • 24/7 Emergency and Critical Care: VMCLI operates around the clock, 365 days a year, to handle all types of veterinary emergencies. Their emergency room is staffed with dedicated emergency veterinarians and technicians equipped to diagnose and treat critical conditions promptly.
  • Internal Medicine: Specialists in internal medicine diagnose and treat complex diseases affecting a pet's internal organs, such as gastrointestinal disorders, respiratory conditions, endocrine diseases (like diabetes and Evans Syndrome, as noted in a review), infectious diseases, and more. Dr. Sean Hillock, mentioned in a review, is an Internal Medicine specialist.
  • Advanced Diagnostic Imaging: Utilizing state-of-the-art equipment, they offer advanced imaging services, which may include ultrasound, CT scans, and MRI, to provide detailed views of internal structures for accurate diagnosis.
  • Specialized Surgery: Board-certified veterinary surgeons perform a wide range of complex soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries, addressing conditions that require specialized surgical expertise.
  • Oncology: For pets diagnosed with cancer, VMCLI provides comprehensive oncology services, including diagnosis, chemotherapy, and supportive care, often collaborating with pet owners and their primary veterinarians.
  • Cardiology: Diagnosis and management of heart conditions in pets, utilizing advanced cardiac imaging and treatment protocols.
  • Neurology: Specializing in disorders of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves, including conditions like seizures, disc disease, and other neurological issues.
  • Dermatology: Diagnosis and treatment of complex skin and ear conditions that may not respond to general veterinary care.
  • Ophthalmology: Specialized care for eye conditions and diseases, including surgical interventions when necessary.

It is important to note that while VMCLI offers emergency and specialty services, they often work in conjunction with your primary care veterinarian, who may refer complex cases to them.

Features / Highlights

The Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island (VMCLI) and its leading veterinarians, including Dr. Robert A. Composto, are recognized for several significant features and highlights that make them a prominent veterinary institution in New York.

  • 24/7 Emergency and Critical Care: This is arguably their most vital feature, providing continuous, immediate medical attention for pets facing life-threatening conditions. Knowing there's a fully staffed and equipped emergency hospital available at all hours is invaluable for pet owners.
  • Multi-Specialty Referral Practice: VMCLI houses a team of board-certified veterinary specialists across various disciplines (e.g., Internal Medicine, Surgery, Oncology). This means pets with complex or chronic conditions can receive expert care and advanced treatment options without needing to travel to multiple facilities.
  • State-of-the-Art Facility: As a leading specialty hospital, VMCLI is equipped with advanced diagnostic imaging technology (like MRI, CT, ultrasound) and sophisticated surgical suites, enabling cutting-edge medical and surgical interventions.
  • Highly Skilled and Compassionate Medical Team: Reviews, such as the one for Heidi, highlight the "fantastic" staff and the expertise of specialists like Dr. Hillock, describing him as a "saviour." This indicates a high level of medical proficiency combined with genuine care for their animal patients. Dr. Composto himself is a co-founder and medical director with a background in emergency and specialty medicine, underscoring the hospital's commitment to high standards.
  • Ability to Handle Complex Cases: The successful treatment of a dog with Evans disease, a serious immune-mediated condition requiring a transfusion and constant monitoring, demonstrates their capability in managing challenging and critical cases.
  • Commitment to Patient Recovery: The long-term follow-up for patients, as evidenced by Heidi's case ("brought her back for checkups in the year following and we were always treated well"), reflects a dedication to comprehensive recovery and post-treatment wellness.

While a previous review mentioned a lengthy wait time for a non-emergency limping puppy case, it's important to understand that emergency hospitals prioritize life-threatening conditions. The VMCLI's primary highlight remains its capacity to handle severe, time-sensitive, and complex medical situations that general practitioners may not be equipped for.
