Paumanok Veterinary Hospital distinguishes itself in the New York veterinary landscape through several key features and highlights, as evidenced by the array of customer experiences. While experiences can vary, certain consistent themes emerge:
- Long-Standing Community Trust: With a history dating back to 1997 (and even earlier, with mentions of 1992 and 27 years in business), Paumanok Veterinary Hospital has built a deep-rooted trust within the Patchogue and Long Island communities. Long-term clients, some dating back decades, attest to this enduring relationship and consistent care.
- Highly Dedicated and Compassionate Veterinarians: Dr. Dave (Dr. David Hensen) is frequently highlighted for his "above and beyond" approach, his willingness to "regularly checks up" on pets, and even assisting clients in finding specialty veterinarians out-of-state and collaborating with them. This level of dedication, care, and proactive involvement deeply resonates with pet owners. Dr. James Kuehn and Dr. Erin Maud are also noted as caring experts with specific professional interests like dentistry, nutrition, feline medicine, ophthalmology, and neurology.
- Supportive and Accommodating Staff: The entire staff, including individuals like Jackie and Taylor, consistently receive praise for being "accommodating" and going "above and beyond" to ensure pets are well cared for. This collaborative team effort contributes significantly to a positive overall experience for both pets and their owners.
- Personalized and Thorough Care: Reviewers often mention the personalized attention received, with vets taking their time to explain conditions and treatments. The commitment to treating "every pet like family" and providing "personalized care" is a strong theme.
- Comprehensive Services Under One Roof: The hospital's full-service nature, offering everything from wellness and vaccinations to surgery and dentistry, provides immense convenience for pet owners. This eliminates the need to visit multiple facilities for different aspects of pet health.
However, it is important to acknowledge that not all experiences are uniformly positive. One review detailed a "terrible" experience with a misdiagnosis of a 14-year-old cat. The client reported that Dr. Dave found "nothing wrong" after multiple visits and expensive treatments, leading to a delay in diagnosis of oral cancer which was subsequently identified immediately by another hospital. This highlights that while many experiences are highly positive, individual medical cases can have different outcomes, and differing professional opinions can occur. It underscores the importance of clear communication, thorough diagnostics, and potentially seeking second opinions in complex or unresolved cases.

Paumanok Veterinary Hospital Reviews
I have been using Paumonok since 1997 and even while I lived in CA, I would bring my dogs there when I came home to visit.Currently, I have a VERY needy Olde English Bulldogge, who is allergic to EVERYTHING and requires a very specific diet as well as treatment.Dr. Dave has been there every step of the way. He has gone above and beyond and even helped me find a specialty veterinarian in Ohio and works with that Dr. to make sure Brody is ok. Dr. Dave regularly checks up on Brody (and his sister Belle) to make sure they are good.I am very grateful for everything Dr. Dave has done for me and my buddy, Brody and his sister. Also, the entire staff Jackie, Taylor and the rest of the staff have always been accomodating and go above and beyond to make sure Brody and Belle are well.I can go on about all the things they have done for me and all of my dogs throughout the years as well as currently for Brody but truthfully I think giving them a call and bringing your pet in for a check up is worth it.
May 06, 2025 · lisa o'shaughnessyI brought my 14 year old cat in because he was drooling and gagging and it seemed there was something in his mouth or throat that was bothering him. Dr Dave examined his mouth and found nothing wrong. Teeth, gums, tongue .He saw no evidence of oral cancer or tooth issues. Sent us home with a very expensive antibiotic. There was no improvement so we brought him back a few weeks later. Again he checked his mouth and still reported nothing. Gave me an estimate (over 1000.00 ) To do x-rays etc to see if it was tooth related and we were sent home. I decided to get another opinion at Sachem animalhospital. Within less then a minute of examining my kitty’s mouth he could see a large lesion on the back of his tongue! It was oral cancer!!!! Sadly far too advanced to do any treatment. They did palliative care and within a month I had to put my sweet baby down. Dr Dave failed us terribly! Had this been caught earlier perhaps there would be a better outcome? I don’t know.. But my cat suffered unnecessarily. I felt we were strung along to milk as much money in treatments and visits as possible. We will NEVER return! VERY disappointed in the “care” we received.
Jun 30, 2025 · Sue ForkelAbsolutely Disgusted by the Lack of Compassion and ProfessionalismI’m furious and heartbroken after what just happened. My dog chewed on a One Shot ant poison catcher, and I was in a full-blown panic, desperate to get help. Poison Control wanted $100 just to speak to me—money I simply couldn't afford in that moment. So I did what anyone would do: I turned to my trusted vet, the one I've been going to for years, thinking surely they'd help guide me through this terrifying situation.Instead, I was treated like I was nothing. The receptionist answered and immediately placed me on hold—didn’t even ask what the emergency was or show the slightest bit of concern. I was half in tears, trying to do the right thing for my dog, and they couldn't even give me a moment of genuine care or concern. All I wanted was some type of guidance—even just a simple, “Give her water and monitor her.” But nope. Nothing unless I paid or came in. Not even a basic answer. I’ve spent so much money at this clinic over the years, and to be treated like this was a slap in the face. You claim to care about animals, but when someone needs you the most, the only thing you seem to care about is money. I actually got more kindness and useful advice from Reddit strangers than from the clinic I trusted with my pet’s life.Shame on this place. If you're going to act like a business first and a care provider second, then stop pretending you're here for the animals.
May 31, 2025 · Mega MatosMy bunnies and I have been going to Dr. Maggie for over 2 years now! Dr. Maggie is so sweet, soft spoken, professional and patient. She has helped guide me into being a great knowledgable rabbit owner and is not judgmental when it comes to asking questions that sometimes feel silly to ask. Her soft approach has made all my rabbits feel extremely comfortable considering that rabbits can be a very timid and easily frightened. We appreciate her very much and would totally recommend her!We love you Dr. Maggie!-Sonnie, Oat and newly added Hermes
Aug 16, 2023 · rachel coolWhen I take my pet to the vet, I always request Dr. Dave. He has been taking care of our pets since he started his practice at Paumanok. One reason why I respect Dr. Dave is the way he handled an experience we had with another pet years ago. This pet got himself into a troubled situation. We took this pet to Paumanok to have him put down. We explained the situation to Dr. Dave. Dr Dave listened. He then had us explain what happened from the beginning. When we explained it again, Dr. Dave took the time to ask us a series of questions related to this us, our pet, and what happened. When we were finished, Dr. Dave again took the time to explain what happened and why. It all made sense. We were able to dry our tears and take our pet home again. We had him for many more years thanks to Dr. Dave. We're now taking our senior cat to Paumanok. Again, I always request Dr. Dave. He has been taking care of our cat since we adopted him 9 years ago as an older cat. He has never been in the best of health. We and Dr. Dave are there for him every step of the way. Thanks to all his care, our cat is living a wonderful life. The office staff is wonderful. They are all kind, friendly and knowledgeable.I would recommend to anyone looking for a good safe place to take their pets, give Paumanok Veterinary Hospital a try.
