Pet Smiles General Veterinary Dentistry specializes exclusively in providing comprehensive dental care and oral surgery for dogs and cats. Their focused expertise allows them to offer a wide range of advanced procedures crucial for maintaining optimal oral health.
- Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment (COHAT): This is the cornerstone of their services, involving a thorough examination, including general anesthesia, full-mouth dental radiographs (X-rays) to visualize below the gum line, professional teeth cleaning and polishing, and identification/treatment of any existing dental disease. They do NOT recommend anesthesia-free dental cleanings.
- Tooth Extractions: Ranging from routine to complex surgical extractions for diseased, damaged, or persistent deciduous (puppy) teeth, as described by a client whose pet needed three extractions. This includes addressing severe disease or damage requiring gingival incisions and bone removal to ensure complete tooth extraction.
- Periodontal Therapy and Surgery: Advanced treatments for gum disease, including gingival flap surgery and bone grafting, aimed at saving diseased teeth and regenerating periodontal tissues.
- Oral Surgery: Beyond extractions, they perform advanced oral maxillofacial surgeries (OMFS) such as tumor removals, fracture repairs, salivary gland surgery, and trauma reconstruction. They utilize diagnostic methods similar to human surgeons, including CT and cone beam CT.
- Anesthesia Management: They utilize only the safest anesthetic protocols, individualized for each pet's specific needs, including IV fluids and continuous monitoring throughout the entire dental process. This is a critical aspect, especially for pets with previous anesthesia complications.
- Pre-Surgical Consultation and Diagnostics: A thorough physical exam and bloodwork are performed during a pre-surgical consultation to assess the pet's overall health and candidacy for anesthesia, allowing for a complete picture of their health.
- Pain Management: Use of local blocks for pain control during procedures and post-operative pain management plans to ensure pet comfort during recovery.
- Post-Procedure Communication and Home Care: Providing clear instructions on administering medications, feeding guidelines, and what to look for in the post-operative period. They also emphasize ongoing home care between professional COHATs.
- Dental Examinations & Consultations: Initial appointments to evaluate your pet's oral condition, discuss findings, and formulate a treatment plan.
- Biopsy of Oral Masses: For diagnosis and treatment planning of any abnormal growths in the mouth.
- Tooth Fractures and Enamel/Dentin Defect Restoration: Addressing broken or damaged teeth.
- Bite/Malocclusion Evaluation: Assessing and treating improper alignment of teeth or jaws.
Pet Smiles General Veterinary Dentistry stands out for several key features that make them an exceptional choice for pet dental care in Arizona, particularly for owners concerned about safety and thoroughness.
- Exclusive Focus on Dental Care: Their sole dedication to general veterinary dental care means they are specialists in this field, possessing unparalleled expertise and equipment specifically for oral health issues in dogs and cats. This focused approach allows for a deeper level of proficiency.

Dr. Hansen and her team are highly experienced in pet anesthesia, using individualized, safest protocols, including IV fluids and monitoring equipment. They kept a client updated with texts during a procedure, providing reassurance about their pet's well-being.
- Highly Skilled and Compassionate Veterinarian (Dr. Hansen): Clients consistently praise Dr. Hansen as "amazing" and "truly heaven sent." She is noted for her ability to "explain everything to me and what happened to her the first time" in a way that is easy to understand, making pet parents feel "reassured" even in stressful situations. Her proficiency in "any and all extractions" is also highlighted.
- Personalized and Empathetic Care: The entire staff, including "all the girls" (vet techs, assistants, and front desk), are described as "so friendly" and giving "detailed updates the entire day of the surgery." This level of personal attention, especially when a pet parent is "very nervous," fosters a sense of trust and comfort.
- Affordable Specialized Care: Despite offering specialized, high-quality care, clients note that the "price was much better than the other quotes I had received," and the prices were "absolutely exceptional." This combination of expertise and affordability is a significant advantage.
- Effective Communication Channels: Providing updates through "texts" throughout the day of surgery, as well as clear explanations, demonstrates their commitment to keeping pet owners informed every step of the way.
- Ability to Handle Challenging Cases: The clinic successfully performed extractions on a pet with a severe history of anesthesia complications, a procedure other vets were unwilling to attempt, showcasing their specialized skill and confidence. Pet Smiles General Veterinary Dentistry Reviews
I absolutely love Pet Smiles!! Dr. Hansen is amazing. Francesca had an issue with anesthesia when she was spayed and stopped breathing. The vet resuscitated her but I was so scared to put her under again. She needed three extractions because two of her puppy teeth would not fall out and another one partially broke. I went to three vets that were referred and they would not do it because of her previous incident with anesthesia. I was finally referred here and I’m so grateful that it was Dr. Hansen that did the procedure. It all worked out. She explained everything to me and what happened to her the first time. There were no complications when Francesca had her dental today and the kept me up to date with texts so I knew how she was doing. I will not go anywhere else for dental work. The price was much better than the other quotes I had received.
May 29, 2025 · Kellie AnnMy sassy Dixie girl is a 12 year old Pomeranian who had some abscessed teeth that became severe while traveling. I needed to get in somewhere quickly so I called Pet Dental in Scottsdale where I had taken her before for cleanings but they were scheduled weeks out. This led me to find Pet Smiles where of course I was very nervous to try a new place in an emergency situation. They got me in literally the next day so I drove from Colorado to Arizona to make the appt. From beginning to end this place was amazing to say the least. All the girls are so friendly and Dr. Hansen is truly heaven sent. She over explains the entire process in ways that I understood. I made it known how scared I was to put Dixie under because she is older and so small. Dr. Hansen made me feel reassured and the rest of the team gave me detailed updates the entire day of the surgery. Everything went smoothly and now Dixie is better than ever. Things can get pricey but in my opinion nothing is more important than making sure my baby is healthy and in the best care. Thank you guys so much for everything 🩷🐾
Jan 30, 2025 · Harmony MoyerFinding Pet Smiles was an answer to prayer for us and our dog. The staff is highly professional, knowledgeable and helpful and will be able to help my pup through alot of needed dental work at a fraction of what it would cost elsewhere. Thank you Dr Hansen for following your heart and seeing the need for qualified pet dentists.
Jun 10, 2025 · Doug OdetteThe staff are very kind and knowledgeable. The doctor thoroughly explained the procedure and clearly stated what to expect. The price estimate was accurate. Good communication throughout the whole process. They took good care of my dog and made sure she was comfortable while staying with them for her surgery. They gave us a customized paper bag with my dog’s post-op medication and a list of things to consider while she was recovering. The surgery follow up consultation is free and the doctor set ups a plan to care for your dog's oral health at home.I am glad I brought my dog to get treated at Pet Smiles.
Dec 30, 2024 · Mariana StaffordWe had an outstanding experience with Pet Smiles, and we can’t recommend them enough! From the moment we walked in, the entire staff was incredibly friendly, compassionate, and caring. Dr. Hansen, in particular, was amazing—she took the time to thoroughly explain everything, answered all of our questions, and made sure we felt completely comfortable with the treatment plan for our dog. When our dog cracked his molar, they got us in quickly for an appointment and surgery, which we really appreciated. Throughout the entire process, they kept us in the loop and made sure we were informed before, during, and after the surgery. It was clear that they genuinely care about their patients. The next morning, we received a call to check on our dog, which really meant a lot to us.Dr. Hansen and the entire team at Pet Smiles went above and beyond, and we are so grateful for their expertise and kindness. We are happy to give them a 5-star review and rating! Thank you for everything!
