The bond between humans and their pets is incredibly strong, and when it comes to their health, trust in your veterinarian is paramount. San Marino Veterinary Clinic strives to be that trusted partner. While every clinic has its unique policies and procedures, the overarching goal at San Marino Veterinary Clinic, as seen through the lens of its long-term clientele, appears to be the well-being and longevity of the animals they serve. This commitment to continuity of care and a deep, intuitive understanding of animal needs has made Dr. Watanabe a "gifted healer" in the eyes of many pet parents in the San Gabriel Valley, providing a crucial local resource for maintaining the health and vitality of furry family members.
San Marino Veterinary Clinic is centrally located at 2374 Huntington Dr, San Marino, CA 91108, USA. The convenience of its location on a well-trafficked street ensures that clients can find and access the clinic without difficulty, whether they are visiting for a routine check-up or for more urgent care.
Huntington Drive connects to various other major roads in the San Gabriel Valley, facilitating a straightforward journey for pet owners coming from different parts of the California region. This accessibility is a significant benefit, especially for pets who may already be anxious or unwell, ensuring that quality veterinary care is within easy reach for the local community.
While specific details about every service offered by San Marino Veterinary Clinic are not explicitly detailed in the provided information, typical veterinary clinics with a long-standing presence like this one generally provide a comprehensive range of services for small animals (dogs and cats). Based on general veterinary practices and the nature of the reviews, the clinic likely offers:
General Wellness and Preventative Care: This would include routine physical examinations, vaccinations tailored to the pet's needs and lifestyle, parasite control (fleas, ticks, heartworm), and basic nutritional counseling to maintain overall health.
Diagnostic Services: Essential for identifying health issues, these likely include in-house laboratory testing (blood work, urinalysis, fecal analysis), digital radiography (X-rays), and potentially other imaging techniques.
Dental Care: Routine dental cleanings, extractions, and oral health assessments are crucial for preventing periodontal disease and its systemic effects.
Minor Surgical Procedures: Typically, general practices perform routine surgeries such as spays and neuters, lump removals, and other common soft tissue procedures, with appropriate anesthesia and pain management.
Internal Medicine: Diagnosis and management of common internal diseases affecting various organ systems in pets.
Senior Pet Care: Tailored health plans for older pets, focusing on managing age-related conditions, pain, and maintaining quality of life, aligning with the mention of "elderly dog" care in a review.
Emergency and Urgent Care: While not a 24-hour emergency hospital, they likely provide urgent care during business hours for non-life-threatening emergencies.
End-of-Life Care and Support: As indicated by a review, they provide compassionate support and care during a pet's final stages of life, helping families navigate difficult decisions.
Behavioral Counseling: Basic advice for common pet behavioral issues that might stem from health concerns or require general guidance.
San Marino Veterinary Clinic, and particularly Dr. Watanabe, are characterized by several significant features and highlights that have shaped their reputation in the California community.
Extensive Experience and Longevity: A client's testimony of being a client for "30 years" and bringing "6 dogs" speaks volumes about the clinic's enduring presence and the depth of experience, particularly from Dr. Watanabe. This long-term commitment indicates a stable and reliable practice.
Highly Skilled "Gifted Healer": Dr. Watanabe is explicitly referred to as a "truly gifted healer" who has "saved the life of more than one of our dogs, and increased the quality of life of all 6." This is a powerful endorsement of his diagnostic and treatment abilities, suggesting he excels in critical care and improving long-term pet well-being.
Dedicated to Quality of Life: The focus on "increased the quality of life" for pets over decades demonstrates a comprehensive approach to veterinary care that extends beyond just treating illnesses, emphasizing overall well-being and comfort, even for elderly animals.
Challenges with Record Transparency: One review highlights a significant concern regarding the clinic's policy on sharing veterinary records for adopted pets. The client states, "their refusal to share my adopted dog’s veterinary records" and argues that "veterinary records are not proprietary—they belong to the well-being of the dog. By withholding them, this clinic is actively making it harder for me to provide my pet with the proper medical attention they deserve." This indicates a potential area where the clinic's policies may conflict with some clients' expectations of transparency and ease of record transfer, particularly for rescue animals where continuity of care is crucial. (It is important to note that California law generally requires veterinarians to provide a summary of records upon client request. Full records are property of the clinic, but a summary containing pertinent medical and drug information must be made available.)
Commitment to Animal Well-being (from one perspective): Despite the record transparency issue, the long-term client's experience suggests a strong underlying commitment to animal health and recovery, with Dr. Watanabe lauded for his success in challenging cases.

For pet owners in San Marino and the surrounding California communities, San Marino Veterinary Clinic offers a deeply experienced and often highly effective option for veterinary care, particularly under the guidance of Dr. Watanabe. His decades of service and a track record of "saving lives" and "increasing the quality of life" for numerous pets over many years speak powerfully to his medical capabilities and dedication as a "gifted healer." This long-standing relationship with clients underscores a significant level of trust and satisfaction in his clinical judgment and care. However, prospective clients, especially those with adopted or rescue pets, should be aware of the expressed concerns regarding the clinic's policy on veterinary record release, which some clients find restrictive and not fully aligned with ensuring seamless ongoing care for their animals. California law requires veterinarians to provide a summary of records, and clients should clarify policies in advance if record transfer is a priority. Despite this specific concern, for those seeking a veterinarian with profound experience and a compassionate approach to healing, particularly for long-term health management, San Marino Veterinary Clinic remains a strong contender, representing a piece of local veterinary history dedicated to the well-being of San Marino's beloved pets.

San Marino Veterinary Clinic Reviews
Dr Watanabe has saved the life of more than one of our dogs, and increased the quality of life of all 6 of the dogs we've brought to him over the 30 years we've been his clients. A truly gifted healer.
Apr 24, 2025 · Lori LeviA Vet Who Puts Policy Over a Dog’s Well-BeingI am beyond disappointed with Dr. Wantanabe and their refusal to share my adopted dog’s veterinary records. As someone who rescued this dog and is committed to giving them the best possible care, I find it appalling that this clinic is more concerned with bureaucracy than the actual health of an animal.Veterinary records are not proprietary—they belong to the well-being of the dog. By withholding them, this clinic is actively making it harder for me to provide my pet with the proper medical attention they deserve. It’s heartbreaking to think that a place dedicated to animal care would choose to put up unnecessary roadblocks instead of helping ensure a rescue dog gets the continued care they need.Rescue pets already go through enough, and their new owners should be supported—not stonewalled—by the professionals who were once responsible for their health. If this clinic truly cared about animals, they would prioritize their well-being over rigid policies. Their refusal to do so is not only frustrating but downright irresponsible. If you value transparency, compassion, and the actual health of your pet, I’d strongly advise you to take your business elsewhere. A vet who refuses to support a dog’s ongoing care is a vet that does not deserve your trust.
Feb 22, 2025 · Hotel GranadaThe doctor's here are AMAZING!!! Dr. Watanabe is like a real life Dr. Doolittle...he's incredible at reading his animal clients. Dr. Jeff his associate is also excellent!!My little adorable furry baby girl Butters, got sick on Friday morning before the Labor Day holiday. I was soooooo worried, that I wouldn't be able to get her help before the weekend. I called the office and they immediately took action to get us in!! After a quick check, we were given some medicine and we were on our way. They followed up with the test results on Tuesday, and gratefully, Butters is doing great once again!!You need to get on a wait list for the first visit, to establish your pet as a patient. Once you do that, you're pet will be treated like a VIP!!Be prepared because, they don't take credit cards, only checks or cash. Other than that, they're are great!!
Sep 07, 2023 · Ceci AngelinniThe veterinary technicians are amazing and showed so much love and compassion for my best friend Fred the Cat who passed the rainbow 🌈 bridge on Thursday 02/20/2025. Since the beginning when Fred got sick they showed me how to give him fluids and his other medication. Thank you so much🐱 😀
Feb 22, 2025 · Mike DeCookThe doctors are great here. We have been going to them 15 years and I feel like they have added years to the lives of my dogs. I had two labs live to be 18 and 17 when both diagnosed with bad forms of cancer. I think the kindest thing they ever did was to do surgery on a little poodle we found that was a mess. Tumor covering her lower body they examined her and said it is not pretty but we can remove it! No promises made but were straight with us that if they did not think they could save they would tell us. They did the surgery and we had a new dog that gave us joy for five more years. The last thing is they are also very compassionate when it is time to say goodbye even when you don't want to. All this makes them the best vet combo ever.
