Thankfully, in Sterling, locals have a truly invaluable resource in the Sterling Shelter Clinic. This facility is renowned for its commitment to providing accessible, affordable, and deeply compassionate veterinary services, particularly focusing on crucial preventative measures like spaying and neutering. More than just a clinic, it's a testament to community welfare, ensuring that essential care is within reach for more pet owners in our state.
The Sterling Shelter Clinic operates as an integral part of the Animal Shelter Inc. of Sterling, embodying a mission to reduce pet overpopulation and homelessness while providing high-quality medical care. Their approach is rooted in the belief that all animals deserve humane sheltering and excellent medical attention, regardless of their background or their owner's income. This ethos translates into a practical, hands-on facility that not only cares for animals within the shelter but also extends its specialized services to the public at significantly reduced costs. By prioritizing affordability, they empower more Massachusetts residents to take proactive steps in their pets' health journeys.
The level of trust and satisfaction among their clients speaks volumes. One grateful pet owner shared a particularly impactful experience: "Everyone is very helpful and nice. Thank you Dr April, my dogs Sofia and Daisy were perfectly fine after surgery and they scared beautifully it doesn’t even look like it’s there. You can trust this team with your pet as long as you take the right precautions at home and follow their instructions. Very affordable care for my babies. They even sent me home with medication for my Sofia’s dermatitis I didn’t know about with no extra cost. I was very scared specially since my pups are bulldogs and have breathing difficulties, I am relieved to say everything went well and after 2 days my puppies were back to their normal selves." Another client praised their consistency: "Great experience every time. Have had several cats neutered and spayed with no issues. I recommend them to everyone because they are very affordable." These testimonials collectively highlight their compassionate staff, surgical expertise even with high-risk breeds like bulldogs, transparent and affordable pricing, and thorough post-operative support, all of which contribute to their excellent reputation.
Sterling Shelter Clinic is conveniently located at 17 Laurelwood Rd, Sterling, MA 01564, USA. The straightforward access ensures that clients can reach the clinic with minimal hassle, which is particularly important when bringing pets in for appointments, especially for surgical procedures.
Sterling Shelter Clinic offers a focused range of veterinary services, primarily centered around preventative care and common surgical procedures. Their mission emphasizes low-cost solutions, which makes essential care available to a broader segment of the community. Their key services typically include:
- Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Services: A cornerstone of their mission, providing affordable sterilization for dogs, cats, and some small animals to combat pet overpopulation. They specialize in pediatric spay/neuter for puppies and kittens as young as 8 weeks (or 2+ pounds), promoting early age sterilization.
- Vaccinations: Offering essential vaccinations such as Rabies, Distemper, Bordetella (Kennel Cough), and Feline Leukemia (FeLV) to protect pets from common diseases. Often available as part of or alongside spay/neuter appointments.
- Microchipping: A vital service for permanent pet identification, significantly increasing the chances of reuniting lost pets with their families. Microchips are often available at the time of surgery.
- Basic Diagnostic Testing: Including tests like Feline Leukemia and FIV testing, and canine Heartworm/Lyme/Ehrlichia/Anaplasma testing (4dx test). These are usually available at the time of spay/neuter surgery.
- Select Minor Surgical Procedures: Beyond spay/neuter, they may offer certain other minor surgical procedures such as cherry eye repair, eye entropion surgery, and eye removal. It is recommended to contact them directly to inquire about specific procedures.
- Dermatitis Medication (with surgery): As noted by a customer, they sometimes provide medication for existing conditions like dermatitis at no extra cost when a pet undergoes surgery, demonstrating a holistic concern for the pet's immediate well-being.
- Assistance for Other Shelters/Rescues: The clinic provides low-cost spay/neuter and medical care for dozens of New England animal organizations, helping them maintain high spay/neuter compliance rates before adoption.
- Public Pet Owner Programs: They offer limited low-cost surgery appointments to the general public, regardless of income, ensuring that essential services are accessible.
It is important to note that their low-cost spay/neuter program and services are specifically designed to address pet overpopulation and are NOT intended to replace annual, general, wellness, or sick veterinary care provided by a full-service private veterinarian. Their primary focus remains on surgical sterilization and immediate preventative measures.
Several features and highlights underscore why Sterling Shelter Clinic is such a valuable and recommended resource for pet owners in Massachusetts:
- Unmatched Affordability: They are consistently praised for their "very affordable care" and "reasonable prices," making essential preventative surgeries and basic vaccinations accessible to a broader range of pet owners who might otherwise struggle to afford these vital services.
- Specialized Surgical Expertise: Their high volume of spay/neuter surgeries, including pediatric procedures and successful outcomes for breeds like bulldogs with specific breathing considerations, highlights their significant surgical proficiency and confidence.
- Compassionate & Supportive Staff: Clients consistently describe the staff as "very helpful and nice" and emphasize their genuine love for animals, creating a reassuring environment for both pets and their owners.
- Thorough Post-Operative Care & Instruction: As evidenced by the bulldog owner's review, they provide clear instructions and even send pets home with necessary medications, demonstrating a commitment to recovery beyond the clinic.
- Dedication to Animal Welfare: Their overarching mission to reduce pet overpopulation, assist other rescue organizations, and engage in community outreach programs reflects a deep commitment to animal welfare beyond individual patient care.
- Clean and Well-Maintained Facility: Despite being a high-volume clinic, clients note that the "office is immaculate and also the areas for the animals," contributing to a professional and safe environment.

Apr 22, 2025 · Lizybeth MendozaI went here all the way from eastern CT to have my 5-month-old kitten spayed. (Local vets had such long wait times that I would've had to make the appointment before my cat was even born.) I was impressed with how quickly they were able to see her, and how affordable it all was! My cat was lovingly handled and I could tell the workers cared about her! She healed up quickly with no issues and is a happy adult cat now.I would recommend this clinic, and when my family adopts again we will bring our cat here if s/he needs to be spayed or neutered.
Nov 21, 2024 · Charlotte SometimesMy baby Thor was neutered at this clinic recently. I cant tell enough good things about how they took very good care of my kitty.. the whole process of scheduling an appointment with them was pretty simple and they reached out within a couple of days with availability. Once Scheduled, they gave us clear instructions on how to prepare the kitty for the surgery. Everything went smooth. the lady who received Thor at the clinic was fantastic and very patiently listened to my concerns and even offered Thor a litter box to do his business as it was pretty early. Everything went smooth with the surgery it appeared.. my baby was well taken care of. very affordable unlike my vet who charged 5 times the cost. WOuld highly recommend Sterling clinic to all those who wanna spay or neuter their kitty cats.. Here is a pic of my Thor with the cone post surgery
