For pet owners in Florida, the prospect of their beloved companion needing surgery can be a source of significant anxiety. In these moments, finding a veterinary practice with a high level of surgical expertise and a compassionate approach is paramount. In Clearwater, Sunset Veterinary Surgery stands out as a specialized facility dedicated to providing advanced surgical care for dogs and cats. Led by a board-certified veterinary surgeon, Dr. George A. Malnati, the practice works in close cooperation with primary care veterinarians to offer specialized services that are often beyond the scope of a general practice. This article delves into the unique offerings of Sunset Veterinary Surgery, highlighting its expert team, personalized care, and commitment to successful surgical outcomes and recovery.
Sunset Veterinary Surgery is conveniently located at 1969 Sunset Point Rd, Clearwater, FL 33765, USA. The clinic's location on a main road makes it easily accessible for clients from Clearwater and surrounding communities who are often referred for specialized treatment. The facility is designed to be fully accessible, with a wheelchair accessible entrance, a wheelchair accessible parking lot, and a wheelchair accessible restroom. These amenities ensure that all pet owners can comfortably and safely bring their animals in for their appointments. The clinic operates on an appointment-required or recommended basis, which ensures that each pet receives a focused and un-rushed consultation. This system allows the team to be fully prepared for each case, providing a high level of individualized attention that is crucial for surgical patients.
As a specialized veterinary surgery practice, Sunset Veterinary Surgery focuses on providing a limited but highly expert range of services. Their primary focus is on complex surgical procedures and the comprehensive care that surrounds them. Here is a detailed list of their specialized offerings:
- Veterinary Surgery: The core of the practice is its expertise in veterinary surgery. They perform a wide variety of surgical procedures, including both orthopedic procedures and soft tissue surgery.
- Orthopedic Specialization: The clinic excels in orthopedic surgeries for conditions such as patellar luxation (often called "trick knee") and cranial cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, a very common injury in dogs. Dr. Malnati has performed over 2,000 Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA) surgeries for CCL tears and also performs Femoral Head Ostectomies (FHO) for hip issues.
- Comprehensive Care: Beyond the surgery itself, the clinic provides full surgical support. This includes comprehensive examinations to prepare for the procedure, detailed post operative care, and follow-up appointments to ensure a complete and successful recovery.
- Diagnostic and Support Services: They have an in-house laboratory for quick laboratory tests and work closely with primary care veterinarians by reviewing patient history and x-rays before the initial consultation.
- General Practice Support: They operate as a referral clinic, offering specialized care that supports the primary care and general practice veterinarians in the region, ensuring pets receive the most appropriate treatment for their specific condition.
What makes Sunset Veterinary Surgery a trusted name in the Florida pet community is the expertise and personal touch of its lead surgeon, Dr. Malnati, and his dedicated staff. Here are some of the key features that truly set this practice apart:
- Board-Certified Surgical Expertise: Dr. Malnati is a Board Certified Veterinary Surgeon, a designation that requires extensive post-graduate training and rigorous examinations. This level of specialization ensures that pets receive care from a surgeon who is an expert in their field. A customer review praised him for being "very knowledgeable and is definitely very good at what he does."
- Personalized and Un-rushed Consultations: A key highlight is the amount of time Dr. Malnati and his staff dedicate to each client. A reviewer noted that he "took his time with us and never rushed us like some veterinarians do." This patient-centered approach ensures that all questions are answered and that owners are fully comfortable and knowledgeable about their pet's procedure.
- Exceptional Post-Operative Communication: The clinic's commitment extends far beyond the operating room. Customers have highlighted that Dr. Malnati would "always answer our questions" even after recovery. He also provides his personal cell phone number for clients to contact him directly with any post-operative questions, a rare and invaluable service that offers immense peace of mind.
- Collaboration with Primary Veterinarians: Sunset Veterinary Surgery works as a partner to your regular vet. They require patient history and records from the primary care provider and, after the procedure, send a full report back. This collaborative approach ensures seamless, continuous care for your pet.
For pet owners facing the difficult decision of veterinary surgery, choosing the right provider is critical. Sunset Veterinary Surgery is an excellent choice for a number of compelling reasons. The most significant is the unparalleled surgical expertise of Dr. Malnati. As a board-certified surgeon with over 40 years of experience and a track record of thousands of successful procedures, he offers a level of skill that is essential for complex orthopedic and soft tissue surgeries. The personal, attentive, and un-rushed nature of the consultations is a major advantage. In a high-stress situation, having a veterinarian who takes the time to explain everything in detail and answer all your questions can make a world of difference. Furthermore, the dedication to post-operative care, including providing a direct line of communication, is a powerful indicator of their commitment to their patients' full recovery. While the clinic focuses on surgical procedures and may not be a one-stop-shop for all veterinary needs, this specialization is precisely what makes it so valuable. For any Florida pet owner whose regular veterinarian has recommended a surgical specialist, Sunset Veterinary Surgery is a top-tier choice that promises both expert medical care and a deeply compassionate approach to a difficult situation. They are a professional, highly skilled team that will treat your pet with the same care and concern you would yourself.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I would highly recommend Dr. Malnati who’s poor fur baby has had the misfortune of a leg injury. Our little Gia accidentally hurt herself one day while jumping around and developed a luxating patella from landing the wrong way. Her knee would pop out of place pretty frequently and she developed a chronic limp our primary veterinarian referred us to Dr. Malnati which we are so grateful for because he was able to fix her up 100%. Even after recovery, he would always answer our questions and would always be happy to see her. He took his time with us and never rushed us like some veterinarians do. He was very knowledgeable and is definitely very good at what he does.
July 11 · Christopher FernandezDr. Malnati is an excellent surgeon. He and his staff are very friendly. He explained in great detail what to expect after our dog's repair of his ACL.
August 13 · Leticia MalagonMy 6yo GSD started limping on his back leg, so I brought him into his normal vet and they suspected a torn ACL. They recommended a few specialists to get it confirmed and have a surgery scheduled. Sunset Veterinary Surgery was at the top of the list and the reviews were all nothing but great, so decided to bring him here.He was seen by Dr. Malnati in a very brief examination. He fiddled with the knee and almost immediately concluded that it was not a torn ACL, maybe a partial tear, but that he could be given collagen to make it better. This was a relief. For the next two weeks, I kept him off of his feet except for a few brief walks on leash to use the bathroom. Despite all of this, both his knee and pain got worse. I just got a second opinion and it has been confirmed that he has an ACL tear.I have no doubt that Dr. Malnati does do fantastic work, but will say his diagnosis of my boy was not handled well at all. My two biggest issues are first, his recommendation that collagen would be enough to slow/stop the degradation of his knee and second that surgery is not suggested for partial tears. If you bring your dog to Sunset Veterinary Surgery and they do not recommend surgery, I highly suggest you get a second opinion.
May 07 · Caleb NorthcottSmall, local clinic that has a caring touch. Nice to see this in a world of corporate vet clinics. Vet was focused on my pet and shared stories that were charming and helpful. Recommend!
July 15 · Mols MamaWe had a great experience going here, recommended by a ton people on a local FB group. The doctor and the staff are super friendly and the cost is actually realistic and very reasonable. With a price that includes the meds and follow ups the stress of not having to keep paying is nice. Our Morty is almost fully healed and we cannot recommend the doctor and clinic enough.
