Their dedicated facility is designed to handle a high volume of surgeries efficiently while maintaining a calm and clean environment for the animals.
Vermont Companion Animal Neutering (VT-CAN!) operates as a specialized, high-volume, reduced-cost spay/neuter clinic. Their core focus is on providing these essential surgical services, along with key preventative care measures, to make them as accessible as possible to Vermont residents and animal welfare organizations.
- Reduced-Cost Spay/Neuter Surgeries: This is their primary service. They offer significantly lower prices for spaying female cats and dogs, and neutering male cats and dogs, compared to full-service veterinary clinics. This affordability is crucial for individuals and families facing financial constraints, as well as for shelters and rescue groups.
- High-Quality Surgical Care: Despite the reduced cost, VT-CAN! maintains a strong commitment to high-quality surgical standards. This includes experienced veterinary staff, proper anesthesia protocols, and pain management to ensure the safety and comfort of every animal.
- Rabies Vaccination: A rabies vaccination is often included with the spay/neuter surgery fee, ensuring compliance with state regulations and providing essential protection against this deadly disease.
- Distemper Vaccination (FVRCP for cats, DAPP for dogs): A core distemper vaccination is typically included at the time of surgery, further enhancing the preventative health measures for the animals.
- Parasite Control: They often include initial doses of de-wormer (such as Pyrantel for dogs and Praziquantel for cats) and flea/ear mite treatment (like Revolution for cats or dogs over 25 pounds) at the time of surgery. This proactive approach helps protect pets from common parasites.
- Microchipping Services: For an additional, affordable fee, pet owners can have their animals microchipped at the time of surgery. This vital service provides permanent identification, significantly increasing the chances of reunification if a pet ever becomes lost.
- Transportation from Remote Areas: VT-CAN! partners with various humane organizations and rescue groups to facilitate transportation of animals from more remote parts of Vermont to the clinic for spay/neuter services, increasing accessibility for those who might otherwise face logistical challenges.
- Financial Assistance Programs: In addition to their already reduced prices, VT-CAN! works to offer further financial assistance when possible, ensuring that income is not a barrier to essential spay/neuter procedures. They also work with programs like VSNIP (Vermont Spay and Neuter Incentive Program) to help eligible Vermonters.
- TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) Services: VT-CAN! supports Trap-Neuter-Return initiatives for feral and community cats, offering specialized reduced rates for these programs to humanely manage wild cat populations.
Vermont Companion Animal Neutering (VT-CAN!) distinguishes itself within the Vermont veterinary landscape through several key features that highlight its mission-driven approach and dedication to animal welfare.
- Non-Profit, Mission-Driven Organization: As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, VT-CAN!'s primary goal is to address pet overpopulation through affordable spay/neuter services, not to generate profit. This mission-first approach ensures that every decision is made with the well-being of animals and the community in mind, contributing to a more humane Vermont.
- Exceptional Affordability: Their commitment to reduced-cost services makes essential veterinary care accessible to a broader segment of the Vermont population, including low-income households and those with multiple pets. This is a critical factor in encouraging responsible pet ownership across the state. They have varying pricing tiers, including a standard and a reduced price, for those who meet income qualifications, making their services widely available.
- High Volume, High Quality: VT-CAN! specializes in high-volume spay/neuter procedures, meaning their veterinary team is highly experienced and efficient in these specific surgeries. This specialization leads to streamlined processes and often quicker recovery times for pets, all while maintaining stringent quality and safety standards. They have successfully performed over 48,000 spay/neuter surgeries since opening in 2008.
- Compassionate and Caring Staff: Numerous client testimonials highlight the "compassion" and "caring" nature of the staff. Even with a high volume, the team ensures that each animal receives individualized attention and comfort, making the experience less stressful for pets and reassuring for owners.
- Proactive Community Engagement: VT-CAN! actively partners with humane societies, rescue groups, and community programs (like those offering transportation) to extend its reach and impact. This collaborative spirit demonstrates their dedication to solving pet overpopulation on a statewide level, working hand-in-hand with other animal welfare advocates.
- Focus on Prevention and Education: Beyond surgeries, VT-CAN! contributes to preventative health by including core vaccinations and parasite control in their surgical packages, where appropriate. They also provide information and resources to pet owners, emphasizing the importance of spay/neuter in overall pet health and community welfare.
- Responsive and Efficient Service: Clients praise VT-CAN! for being "very quick to respond and get animals right in," which is crucial when scheduling procedures. This efficiency ensures that pets can receive timely care, preventing further litters and potential health complications.

Vermont Companion Animal Ntrng Reviews
My family has had 8 kittens spayed/neutered here in the past year. The compassion, service, and price is unmatched. VTCAN was wonderful about checking on my girl kitty, Evelyn, last winter, when she wasn't feeling so good after her surgery. They saw me ASAP and gave her antibiotics and fluids for free. I can't stress enough what a great and affordable place this is!❤️😻❤️
Aug 30, 2022 · Funky Art MuffinsThe staff is very caring and informative! They always ask important questions and make sure animals are well taken care of. They have been very quick to respond and get animals right in. They have done many animals for us over the years!
Jul 05, 2024 · Christina HaywardThis experience was such a delight! They were fast and very politeWe came all the way from Rutland and didn’t want to spend the whole day there, they nicest lady at the door saw where we were from and said she would put them first , saved us a couple of hours so we went and had breakfast at the wayside diner (which she suggested) and it was amazing! And puttered around some shops and then had lunch and they were ready before they saidAnd the cats are doing great and look great already back to their selves! I just want to thank everyone there! You guys are great!
Nov 18, 2024 · Angela BizonVT-CAN was amazing!!! I was worried that my 5 month old kitten was pregnant from her previous living situation and they got me in super fast. The drop off process was easy and they took great care of my baby. She was up and eating the second I brought her home. Thank you VT-can for being an affordable option for people who need it!!!
Aug 24, 2022 · Alex TurnquistI can not accurately state how thankful I am to have such amazing programs like VT-CAN available in this area. The woman at check in was so friendly and welcoming at drop off and helped ease my worries. I recently got my fur baby and she had been dealing with some skin issues related to a flea infestation when I first got her and they reached out asking if I would be alright with them helping to start the treatment process, as I was short on funds to spend at a full service veterinarian this was not only a tremendous help to me, but also to my kitty. The price they charge is outstanding, she got rabies and distemper shots, an antibiotic shot for her skin, revolution, pain meds and her spay for only 75$. It is so refreshing to know that we have such wonderful people to take our animals to that are not only more worried about making sure your animals are okay than making money, but people that also know how to comfort a stressing pet parent so effortlessly. I can not recommend VT Companion more. Absolutely amazing.
