Jun 11, 2025 · Joe DasI'm a foster mom for multiple rescues and shelters so I've been around the block with veterinarians. I've been fostering for 9 years and had yet to find someone I truly liked. I heard about Dr. Castimore so I gave him a shot when my great Dane suddenly wouldn't use his leg. Him and his staff were absolutely amazing. I wish I had found them sooner. He doesn't make you feel like you're another number, he actually takes his time and goes over everything. Extremely happy I found them.

I got recommended this practice from a few of my friends that have gone to Sam for years. I got my 11 month old puppy neutered a little over 2 weeks ago and everything seemed fine when I got her back. Fast forward 3 days and I noticed some uneven hair, she was also licking, and scratching at her back. I took a look at the area and it was a little red and irritated. She had the surgery suit on so I chalked it up to maybe that was bothering her. I bought some hydrocortisone spray and started putting some of that on her. Her spirits were up and she was eating and drinking water normally. I also couldn’t see it too well because she has darker skin and white hair. So I did the best I could do in that situation and kept applying hydrocortisone spray. Fast forward a couple of days and I pet her and I feel a really tough scab. I immediately start to freak out because I had no clue what it was and It was Memorial Day weekend so I had to wait until Tuesday to get her in to see Sam. (It was an agonizing 2 days). Tuesday hits and I’m at Animal General at 9am waiting for the doctors to show up at 10am. 10am hits and I wait 20 minutes and then they call us in and they start to examine my dog. They’re touching and feeling around the area and they didn’t know what it was. They shaved a large portion of her back and they take a closer look. You cannot fathom what I saw the moment they took all of the hair off. It was a large patch of red/brown/black skin that was hard like a scab. At first they could not tell me what it was but then they kept looking and they told me it was “superficial pyoderma” which is a bacterial infection caused by a number of things. They could not tell me what specific thing or event had caused this because there was absolutely no change in her activities/food except for the neuter that they had done. They send my dog and I home with 2 antibiotics, 1 antihistamine w/prednisone and 1 antibiotic ointment. Sam also had said that the would would start to life and we would have to start picking at it to remove the scab she had over it. As soon as I got home I started her treatment and I also started researching the diagnosis. When I came across articles, pictures and videos of superficial pyoderma I couldn’t find anything that looked like what she had but I had trusted my vet and I also told myself that the diagnosis could look different on my dog. Fast forward a couple of days and the wound was not getting better or even lifting like Sam said it would. I executed the treatment meticulously but It looked completely the same just with the disgusting yellow ointment on every single part of her and it continued to bother her even when I touched her on other parks of her body. Yesterday I looked at the wound again when I had gotten home from running errands and she had a red bum protruding from the wound and behind that bump was another one not yet pronounced like the first bump. That was my last straw so I picked up my phone and looked up emergency vets. I found a vet in denville that was open until 9pm. I called over to the vet and I asked them if they were able to see her and they said yes so I packed all of her medications and the paperwork I had and I drove over 30 minutes to the vet. All animals great and small were fantastic and soul highly recommend. Once we got there we got her checked in and waited to be seen. They called us into the room and I took her surgery suit off and the first thing the Vet had said to me after looking at the wound for 2 seconds was “what did they say this was” and I told him and he said “No this is not superficial pyoderma, this is a burn wound. You see this black skin/scab it’s necrotic tissue. This skin is dead that’s why it’s black”.

What this dog needs is wound care” he then asked me what the prior events were and he said to me “what I’m speculating is that during her neuter they used a heating pad to keep her warm and they had it up too high and it burned her. This looks like a heating pad burn. You see the shape of the wound it looks like what a heating pad burn looks like” so then kept looking a feeling the wound and he told me what we needed to do. He told me that we needed to apply masuka honey wound care and debride it. He told me that depending on how it heels it might need to be surgically done and there’s a possibility that the hair won’t grow back in certain parts but he could not be sure due to all wounds healing different. I was in utter horror and shock during this appointment, and I could not fathom how my vet that I had gotten so many recommendations for could do this and then misdiagnose it. It is unfathomable to me how this could happen to my 11 month old puppy. She could have gone into shock after her neuter from so many injuries or this could have been life threatening and I had no idea. Also to top this horror off I have been miss treating her for the past week when she could have been getting the right treatment to start feeling better. Since starting her new treatment last night the wound looks a lot better and the necrotic tissue has started to come off AND IT HAS BEEN LESSS THAN 24 HOURS. Animal general should be ashamed of themselves for this whole situation. I paid 200 dollars for the wrong treatment for an injury THEY CAUSED. I pray this doesn’t happen to any more animals who they care for. They are a danger to animals and should stop treating patients.
