If you are in the Nashville area I highly recommend Canine Rehabilitation of Nashville for your pet, they see dogs and cats! They have been fantastic to my mom and her dog Tonka during his IVDD healing journey. They treat all kinds of other conditions too, such as arthritis, fractures, wobblers, hip dysplasia etc. I’m highly considering taking our oldest girl Tutu there for her luxating patellas and just an arthritis preventative since she’s getting up there in age. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable, they have no problem answering our hundreds of questions! They also have cold drinks in the lobby 😆🙌🏻 I seriously can’t say enough good things about this place! 10/10 - Jen Taylor

Canine Rehabilitation of Nashville Introduce

For pet owners in Tennessee, seeing our beloved dogs and cats experience pain, reduced mobility, or a slow recovery after an injury or surgery can be incredibly distressing. While traditional veterinary care focuses on diagnosis and initial treatment, the journey to full recovery often requires a specialized approach that addresses physical limitations and helps pets regain their strength and quality of life. This is precisely where Canine Rehabilitation of Nashville steps in, offering a dedicated and highly effective solution for pets needing physical rehabilitation.

Canine Rehabilitation of Nashville is a specialized facility focused exclusively on helping companion animals recover from injuries, manage chronic conditions, and improve their overall mobility and function. Unlike general veterinary clinics, their entire team and range of services are geared towards physical therapy, pain management, and conditioning tailored specifically for dogs and cats. They understand that active recovery, guided by expert hands, leads to faster healing and better long-term outcomes for pets, allowing them to return to their normal activities sooner.

Since its inception in 2006, founded by Rod Newman, MS, CCRP, Canine Rehabilitation of Nashville has been a pioneer in bringing human physical therapy principles to the animal world in Middle Tennessee. They leverage proven techniques and state-of-the-art equipment to address a wide array of orthopedic and neurological conditions, helping pets like Tonka with IVDD, or those suffering from arthritis, fractures, and Wobblers syndrome, find their way back to a comfortable and active life.

For Tennessee locals, Canine Rehabilitation of Nashville represents a beacon of hope and a vital resource for ensuring their furry family members can live their best, most comfortable lives, even after facing significant health challenges.

Location and Accessibility: Convenient Rehabilitation Across Nashville

Canine Rehabilitation of Nashville has two convenient locations to serve pet owners throughout the greater Nashville, TN area. Their primary location is at 147 Thompson Ln, Nashville, TN 37211, USA. This central Nashville address makes it easily accessible for residents within the city limits and from surrounding communities. Additionally, they have a second location in Goodlettsville, inside the North Nashville Animal Hospital building at 121 Two Mile Pike, further enhancing their reach and accessibility for pet owners in northern Nashville and beyond.

The Thompson Lane location is situated to provide straightforward access for those traveling from various parts of the metro area. Ample parking is typically available at both facilities, easing the stress of bringing a pet, especially one with mobility issues. As a specialized rehabilitation center, Canine Rehabilitation of Nashville operates by appointment only, ensuring that each pet receives focused, one-on-one care without the typical wait times of a general vet office. This structure, combined with their multiple locations, makes quality pet rehabilitation services remarkably accessible and convenient for Tennessee pet parents, allowing them to integrate therapy seamlessly into their pet's recovery journey.

Services Offered: Specialized Therapies for Enhanced Mobility and Comfort

Canine Rehabilitation of Nashville offers a comprehensive suite of physical rehabilitation services for dogs and cats, all designed to improve mobility, reduce pain, and enhance overall quality of life. Their specialized therapies include:

  • Manual Therapy: This involves hands-on techniques such as therapeutic massage, stretching, modified stretches, and joint mobilizations. Manual therapy helps decrease muscle pain, reduce stiffness in joints, address scar formation, improve range of motion, and can assist with patterning and gait retraining in neurologic conditions.
  • Underwater Treadmill (Hydrotherapy): A cornerstone of their rehabilitation program, the underwater treadmill utilizes the buoyancy of water to decrease impact on joints while providing resistance for muscle strengthening. It's used to increase muscular strength, coordination, conditioning, improve circulation, and enhance tissue healing.
  • Laser Therapy (Class IV Therapeutic Laser): Cold laser therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to promote blood flow, decrease pain and inflammation, and accelerate tissue healing. It is frequently used for arthritis, post-operative recovery, and various injuries.
  • Strength Training and Therapeutic Exercises: Customized land exercises are developed individually for each patient and adjusted as they progress. These exercises utilize various equipment like therabands, cavaletti poles, exercise balls, discs, and peanuts to improve balance, coordination, muscle mass, and endurance.
  • Acupuncture Therapy: Offered as a complementary treatment to help with pain relief, inflammation, and improve overall wellness. They can utilize traditional acupuncture as well as aquapuncture or electro-acupuncture for enhanced response.
  • Electrical Stimulation (TENS & NMES):
    • Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS): Used to treat pain by producing a mild tingling sensation, commonly applied after surgery and for muscle pain.
    • Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES): Helps stimulate nerves and muscles, particularly after neurological trauma, surgeries, or for patients with paralysis, targeting specific muscle groups for strengthening.
  • Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Therapy: Utilizes electromagnetic frequencies to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and accelerate healing. PEMF beds can also help decrease stress, especially for feline patients.
  • Wearable Device Fittings: Assistance with fitting and recommending various supportive devices such as harnesses, slings, booties, toe grips, paw pad traction devices, orthotic braces, wraps, and wheelchairs for both short-term recovery and long-term daily living.
  • Post-Operative Rehabilitation: Essential for pets recovering from orthopedic surgeries (like CCL rupture, hip/elbow surgery, fractures, patellar luxations) and neurological surgeries (like IVDD), aiming to expedite return to normal function, provide pain relief, limit muscle atrophy, and increase range of motion.
  • Management of Chronic Conditions: Specialized programs for conditions such as osteoarthritis, hip and elbow dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, Wobblers syndrome, and chronic arthritis.
  • Geriatric Care: Tailored rehabilitation programs to improve the overall quality of life for senior pets, focusing on pain reduction, improved joint mobility, and increased daily function.

Their focus on getting pets "back to their baseline" or "back on their paws" is a recurring theme of success.
  • Personalized Treatment Plans: They "came up with a great plan" for individual pets, indicating a tailored approach rather than a one-size-fits-all solution. Exercises are developed on an individual basis and change as the patient responds to therapy.
  • Focus on Active Recovery: Their approach is rooted in the principle of active recovery, where controlled activity leads to faster and more effective healing than complete rest. This evidence-based methodology sets them apart.
  • Client Education: They are committed to educating pet owners, providing products and tips for at-home care, and explaining treatment options thoroughly, ensuring owners are active participants in their pet's recovery journey.
  • Comfort and Convenience for Clients: Small touches like "cold drinks in the lobby" contribute to a positive client experience, demonstrating their attention to detail and care for pet parents during potentially stressful visits.
