We were sent over to Reade Street Animal Hospital after our former vet shut down.We had to bring our cat in because she was feeling spooked, anxiety, and having bathroom problems. They pumped her mouth full of some anti-anxiety medication which she despised and spit out. And right then, HAMMERING started in the room right next to us!Our cat was there for ANXIETY - in a strange environment, getting prodded and poked - she was scared enough. But do you have any idea how scared cats are of HAMMERING?Apparently not. How can a vet office justify HAMMERING in the middle of the day??I had to run out of there and sit outside with our cat carrier while my wife promptly settled up our bill, in full, of course. We had one follow up call with a very pleasant doctor who told us our cat may have lingering issues, but let's keep an eye and call back. Our cat is still having lingering issues as I type this, and I called back yesterday, and still no one has returned our call. It's impossible at this point to leave anything but an unhappy review of this place, and it seems we will need to quickly find somewhere new before our cat becomes really sick. - Pete M.

Reade Street itself is a well-known street, blending historic architecture with modern amenities, contributing to the clinic's approachable urban setting.

Reade Street Animal Hospital, as a Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner, aims to provide comprehensive veterinary services, designed to meet a wide range of needs for dogs and cats. While a detailed list of every single service is not publicly available in the provided information, the nature of a modern animal hospital and typical Thrive Pet Healthcare offerings suggest a broad spectrum of care.

  • General Wellness and Preventive Care: This would include routine physical examinations, tailored vaccination protocols based on a pet's lifestyle and risk factors, parasite prevention and control, and nutritional counseling for pets of all ages.
  • Diagnostic Services: A full-service animal hospital typically offers extensive in-house diagnostic capabilities. This would include comprehensive laboratory services for blood work (CBC, chemistry panels), urinalysis, fecal exams, and cytology. Advanced imaging such as digital radiography (X-rays) and ultrasound would also be available for internal evaluations.
  • Medical Consultations: For pets experiencing illness, anxiety, or other specific health concerns, detailed medical consultations are provided to diagnose conditions, develop treatment plans, and manage chronic diseases. The provided review indicates they attempt to manage issues like pet anxiety.
  • Surgical Procedures: A comprehensive animal hospital would perform a range of surgical services, from routine spays and neuters to more complex soft tissue surgeries. State-of-the-art anesthetic monitoring and pain management would be standard.
  • Dental Care: Professional dental cleanings, oral examinations, dental radiography, and extractions are standard services to address and prevent periodontal disease, which significantly impacts overall pet health.
  • Urgent Care: While not a 24/7 emergency clinic, as a full-service hospital, they would typically accommodate urgent cases during business hours, recognizing the need for timely intervention for non-life-threatening but pressing issues.
  • Pharmacy Services: An in-house pharmacy would provide convenient access to prescribed medications, specialized diets, and various preventatives immediately after a visit.
  • Client Education and Support: Based on the review mentioning a "pleasant doctor who told us our cat may have lingering issues," there is an indication of providing information and advice to pet owners for managing their pets' conditions.

As part of the Thrive Pet Healthcare network, they likely also benefit from broader resources, potentially including access to specialists or a unified system for patient records across partner locations.

Reade Street Animal Hospital, as a Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner, showcases both strong positive features and areas that have led to significant client frustration.

  • Superb Care and Follow-up (Positive Experience): One highly positive review highlights "superb care and follow-up both in and out of the office (email, phone, text)." This indicates a commitment to comprehensive patient management that extends beyond the clinic visit, ensuring ongoing support and communication with pet owners. This responsiveness to "our cat's and our own needs" is a significant advantage for many.
  • Dedicated and Responsive Staff (Positive Experience): The positive reviewer praises "the doctor(s) to the tech and reception staff" for being "extremely responsive." This suggests that, for some clients, the entire team works cohesively to provide attentive and supportive service, which is crucial for building trust and ensuring a positive experience.

However, a more detailed and negative review brings to light several critical issues:

  • Lack of Sensitivity to Pet Anxiety and Environment: A significant concern arose when the clinic performed "HAMMERING" construction noise right next to an exam room while a cat was being treated specifically for "ANXIETY." This demonstrates a severe lack of awareness or disregard for the impact of environmental stressors on an already scared and anxious animal, directly undermining the purpose of the visit. This implies a systemic issue with operational planning or staff training regarding patient comfort.
  • Inconsistent Follow-up and Communication (Negative Experience): Despite one positive mention of follow-up, a negative review explicitly states, "I called back yesterday, and still no one has returned our call," indicating a critical failure in consistent follow-up, especially for a pet with "lingering issues" after initial treatment. This lack of responsiveness can be highly distressing for pet owners with sick pets.
  • Perceived Lack of Empathy during Distressing Situations: The experience of having to "run out of there and sit outside with our cat carrier while my wife promptly settled up our bill" due to construction noise suggests a lack of understanding or empathy from the clinic staff in a highly stressful situation for both the pet and the owners.
  • Potential for Lingering Issues After Treatment: The doctor acknowledging "lingering issues" and the pet still experiencing them without a return call, highlights a potential gap in resolving ongoing health problems or adequately managing chronic conditions.
  • Unsuitable Environment for Sensitive Animals: The specific incident with the cat's anxiety being exacerbated by noise indicates that the clinic environment, at least during the time of the review, was not suitable for animals with high anxiety or sensitivity, and procedures were not adequately managed to minimize stress.

These contrasting reviews suggest a significant inconsistency in the client experience at Reade Street Animal Hospital. While some clients receive excellent care and follow-up, others encounter serious operational shortcomings and a perceived lack of empathy during critical moments, which can severely undermine trust and the effectiveness of care.

For residents of New York seeking veterinary care in Lower Manhattan, Reade Street Animal Hospital, a Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner, can be contacted using the following information:

Address: 146 Reade St, New York, NY 10013, USA

Phone: (212) 274-1700

Mobile Phone: +1 212-274-1700

It is highly recommended to contact Reade Street Animal Hospital directly via phone during their business hours to schedule appointments, inquire about specific services, or discuss any concerns regarding your pet's health. Given the mixed reviews, especially concerning environmental factors for anxious pets and follow-up, clear communication about your pet's specific needs and the clinic's current operational status (e.g., any ongoing renovations or noise) would be particularly beneficial before a visit.

For pet owners throughout New York City, particularly those in Lower Manhattan, Reade Street Animal Hospital, a Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner, offers a geographically convenient option for veterinary care. Its central location in Tribeca provides excellent accessibility via numerous subway lines, making it easily reachable for routine appointments and even urgent needs for many urban dwellers. As a part of the Thrive Pet Healthcare network, it aims to provide comprehensive services from general wellness to diagnostics and surgery, aspiring to be a full-service animal hospital for your beloved companions.

For some locals, the clinic delivers "superb care and follow-up," with responsive doctors, techs, and reception staff who attend to both pet and owner needs. This level of consistent communication and support is highly valued and can make the clinic an ideal partner for long-term pet health management.

However, it is crucial for prospective clients to acknowledge the significant and concerning feedback from other pet owners. Incidents involving loud construction during an anxiety-prone pet's visit and a lack of follow-up on persistent health issues raise serious questions about the clinic's sensitivity to animal well-being in stressful situations and the consistency of their client communication. For pets with anxiety or special handling requirements, or for owners who expect seamless and highly responsive post-visit support, these reported shortcomings are critical considerations. Therefore, while Reade Street Animal Hospital's comprehensive services and convenient location make it an option for New Yorkers, potential clients should approach with clear expectations, perhaps discussing their pet's specific needs and the clinic's operational environment beforehand, to ensure it aligns with their priorities for compassionate and consistent veterinary care.
