Small Door Veterinary - Upper East Side Introduce
In a city as dynamic as New York, finding a veterinary practice that is not only medically excellent but also convenient and transparent can be a challenge. For pet owners on the Upper East Side, Small Door Veterinary offers a fresh and modern approach to animal healthcare. This facility operates on a unique membership model, designed to provide a more personalized, stress-free, and comprehensive experience for both pets and their humans. By focusing on a high standard of care and leveraging modern technology, Small Door aims to redefine what it means to be a local vet in the heart of NYC.
Small Door Veterinary is more than just an animal hospital; it's a veterinary practice built around the principle of integrated care. Their membership model is a key differentiator, bundling essential services and providing continuous access to care that goes beyond the traditional in-person visit. The goal is to build long-term relationships with pets and their owners, ensuring every pet receives consistent, high-quality care throughout their life. This approach is particularly beneficial for managing chronic conditions, as the continuity of care helps veterinarians stay closely attuned to a pet's health history and evolving needs.
A central tenet of the Small Door philosophy is to create a better experience for everyone involved—pets, pet parents, and veterinary staff. This is reflected in their state-of-the-art facilities, which are designed to reduce pet anxiety, as well as their commitment to transparent pricing and client communication. They strive to offer an experience that is both medically sound and emotionally supportive, addressing the common frustrations of long waits, rushed appointments, and surprise bills. For New Yorkers who value efficiency and transparency, this modern model offers a welcome change in the world of pet healthcare.

Personalized and Compassionate Care: Reviews consistently highlight how the staff and doctors are loving, gentle, and careful when handling pets. They make an effort to get to know each pet's personality and specific needs, remembering details like a favorite toy or a chicken allergy, which fosters a strong, trusting relationship.

For New York pet owners, the choice of a veterinary practice is about finding a place that aligns with their lifestyle and values. Small Door Veterinary’s membership model is a compelling option because it directly addresses many of the common pain points of traditional vet care. The most significant benefit is the peace of mind that comes with 24/7 access to veterinary advice. This service is invaluable for new pet owners or those with anxious personalities who need immediate guidance without having to rush to an emergency room for every small concern.
The focus on personalized, compassionate care is also a major reason to choose Small Door. As highlighted in customer reviews, the staff's dedication to building a relationship with each pet and their owner is a powerful differentiator. The clinic’s commitment to transparency in pricing and communication is another key advantage, eliminating the stress of unexpected bills and ensuring you are always an active participant in your pet's healthcare decisions. This approach contrasts sharply with the experiences some have had at other vets, where a lack of communication and hidden costs can be a source of frustration.
Ultimately, Small Door Veterinary is a modern, forward-thinking practice that uses technology and a unique business model to provide a superior client experience. By offering a full range of services—from preventive medicine and urgent care to surgery and dental work—all within a calm and supportive environment, they have created a truly comprehensive and trustworthy resource for the New York pet community. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I signed up for a Small Door membership when I finally got to bring home my medical service dog (trained by the amazing organization ECAD in CT). The biggest plus of SD membership is that I can reach out via chat support or phone call as soon as I have a concern, and if needed, I can consistently get a same day appointment. I don't have to worry about waiting hours or days for a reply when I'm afraid my dog might be sick or injured and I need guidance quickly. Also, my pup Gusto is a working dog, so twice yearly check-ups are standard to make sure he's still fit to perform his job. Membership makes that more affordable. Small Door always does a great job filing pet insurance claims, and their costs for services are made very transparent at each visit, so I've never been caught off guard by the amount I'm charged.I appreciate greatly that Gusto is never taken out of sight for tests or treatments unless I'm asked and I give permission. I'm there to help hold him and make sure he feels secure whether it's a routine blood test, a vaccine, or an ear check-up. I've seen for myself how loving and gentle and careful all the staff are when handling Gusto, which brings me peace of mind.Lastly, I love how much everyone at Small Door loves my dog. Once his working vest is off and they have the all clear, they make his visits fun with lots of scritchies and playfulness, and Gusto is thrilled to see everybody every time we go. They remember details about him, like his favorite toy and his chicken allergy. I am comforted knowing that my very precious canine companion is in good hands!
April 23 · Emma KoosisMy labrador retriever named Bali has been a member for more than a year and we love it. Well, she doesn’t always love coming in because she has had some treatments there but I love it because I feel like the staff are super caring about her and they have all her records, and it is a far better experience than just going to a vet. Going to a regular vet doesn’t feel as personal as Small Door where she is a member and they have all her comprehensive medical records and contact us for any vaccines she needs. Our vets in the past never did any of that. My second dog, Bhutan is also a member And I keep renewing year after year
May 12 · Catherine HEALDWe’ve had excellent care for our dog. After every appointment they follow up and message us promptly in the app (and via email). The ability to message at any time provides a real comfort. Highly recommend!
August 25 · Michael AppelI’ll be honest—I was a little hesitant at first about going to a “corporate” vet practice. I wasn’t sure if it would feel impersonal or rushed, like I was just another appointment on the schedule. But Small Door Vet completely proved me wrong. From the moment we walked in, I felt an immediate sense of care and calm. I asked a ton of questions (probably more than most!), and she never once made me feel rushed or like I was asking too much. She took the time to walk me through everything, explain each step clearly, and made sure I left feeling completely informed and at ease. What really stood out was the follow-up. They called me the very next day to check in and see how my pet was doing. That simple gesture showed me this place goes far beyond just being a vet clinic—it’s a team that genuinely cares.Even though I had my reservations about a larger practice, Small Door offered the kind of thoughtful, personalized care you hope to find but so rarely do. I’m incredibly grateful and can’t recommend them enough.
June 27 · DOne of the worst vet experiences I’ve had, not just once, but twice over the past two years. The first time, my dog had a cough and the vet immediately pushed for an X-ray, which cost around $350. Then, I was told I needed to pay an additional $200 just to have the X-rays reviewed within 30 minutes, otherwise, it would take a couple of days. I declined the rush fee, and the vet casually mentioned, “I took a look myself and it seems like your dog may have an enlarged heart.” Understandably, I was panicked. The next day, the actual technician reviewed the images and confirmed there was no enlarged heart. It felt like a scare tactic to get me to pay more, completely unethical.Fast forward to today, we had a 10:30 AM appointment, arrived at 10:42 AM (they have a 10-minute policy), and despite being just two minutes over, the front desk staff was shockingly rude. I was clearly a stressed-out dog mom dealing with a limping pup, and instead of offering any compassion, the receptionist was dismissive and cold. There are other Small Door locations with far more professional and humane teams. I’d strongly recommend going elsewhere, this particular practice consistently lacks empathy, professionalism, and transparency.
