VCA Regional Institute for Veterinary Emergencies and Referrals Introduce
For pet owners in Tennessee, especially in the Chattanooga area, the health and safety of our animal companions are a top concern. While our regular family veterinarian is essential for routine care, there are times when a pet's needs exceed a general practice, particularly during emergencies or when a complex health issue arises. In those critical moments, knowing where to turn for advanced, round-the-clock care is paramount. The VCA Regional Institute for Veterinary Emergencies and Referrals, affectionately known as VCA RIVER, is a leading emergency and specialty animal hospital that serves as a vital resource for the entire region. This facility is more than just a place for urgent care; it is a center of excellence staffed by veterinary professionals dedicated to providing the highest level of compassionate and expert care. As one pet owner shared after a harrowing experience, the team at VCA RIVER was "amazing," treating their cat "as family" and providing "10/10, 5 stars, highly recommend" service.
VCA RIVER stands out as a state-of-the-art facility designed to handle a wide range of veterinary needs, from unexpected accidents to long-term specialty care. The hospital is accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), a distinction held by only a select few veterinary referral practices, signifying their adherence to the highest standards of patient care and facility quality. Their services are often provided on a referral basis from a primary veterinarian, ensuring a collaborative approach to complex cases. However, as an emergency hospital, they are also prepared to receive pets for urgent medical treatment at any time, day or night. This dual function as both a referral center and an emergency hospital makes them an invaluable asset to the Tennessee community.
Located at 2132 Amnicola Hwy, Chattanooga, TN 37406, USA, VCA RIVER is easily accessible for pet owners throughout the Chattanooga area and beyond. The hospital’s location is convenient for those traveling from different parts of the city and surrounding counties. Accessibility has been a key consideration in the design and operation of the facility. The hospital features a wheelchair-accessible parking lot and a wheelchair-accessible restroom. These thoughtful accommodations ensure that all visitors, including those with mobility challenges, can navigate the facility with comfort and ease during what can often be a stressful time.
Given the nature of emergency and specialty care, VCA RIVER operates 24/7, 365 days a year. While they are always open for emergencies, appointments are recommended for specialty care and referrals. This allows the hospital's specialized departments to prepare for each case and provide a thorough consultation. For emergency situations, pet owners are encouraged to call ahead to notify the staff of their arrival, which can help expedite the triage process.
VCA RIVER offers an extensive list of services, covering everything from immediate critical care to long-term treatment and rehabilitation. Their expertise is categorized into several departments, ensuring a focused and high-level approach to each medical specialty.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Our cat, Rio, was attacked by a dog, and while there was no physical injury, bleeding, puncture wounds that we could see, he was not himself. He’s a big boy (fat cat) but he wouldn’t walk, eat or drink, so we took him first thing this morning to this emergency vet and they were amazing. From the receptionist, to the tech that triaged him, and the veterinarian who came in to let us know what was going on, I knew we were in good hands. Our pets are our family and the treated him as such. I was also pleasantly surprised by the price of the services rendered, I was expecting it to cost a lot more. Rio is now back home with us and doing well, the pain medication made him a little nutty but we were all happy to see him moving around and eating again. 10/10, 5 stars, highly recommend this facility and staff, if we have any concerns with our pets, this will be where we take them
June 14 · Holly JohnsonWe had to take our 13yr old basset hound here yesterday to be put to sleep. As hard as it was the staff there is amazingly kind. They made us feel so loved and comfortable while saying goodbye to our beloved dog. I highly recommend this facility. Thank you for taking such good care of us and our dog Colonel!
March 26 · A BThis place was such a godsend to my family. On July 12, we took our German Shepherd to Animal Emergency and Specialty on Lee Highway, where they misdiagnosed his lethargy as dehydration. After spending $900 on an X-ray, fluids, and meds, they sent us on our way, claiming he was fine. For three weeks, my dog suffered! On Thursday, I called VCA River and described his symptoms and what the other vet had said. They told me to bring him in immediately. They found that he had a huge mass in his abdomen that had erupted and was leaking into his belly, something the other vet had missed. We were preparing for a $13,000 surgery, but the vet explained that, due to his age and weakened state, his quality of life would be significantly reduced and he might only live another year. We made the difficult decision to let him go peacefully and end his suffering. While my dog is no longer in pain, I want to publicly thank VCA River for their help and compassion.Conversely, the experience with Animal Emergency and Specialty on Lee Highway was appalling. When I called them to get the X-rays, I could see the mass myself with no veterinary training! Despite telling them we had to put our dog down, they showed no empathy. I can’t bring my baby back but I will honor his life by advocating for who helped and who didn’t! Please please please take your baby to this place VCA RIVER has to be the only option if you love your baby like we do! With everything they did including his cremation and processing his remains back to us it was $400 that included the same X-ray the other place did improperly and the processing of our babies body with dignity. Animal Emergency and Specialty charge us $905 and my baby suffered for two week. Please please please TAKE YOUR LOVE ONE TO VCA RIVER
July 27 · Zennia NesmithThe staff and personnel are kind and considerate. I was traveling from Florida to Wisconsin and stayed overnight in Chattanooga at which time my 16 year old beautiful cat was very ill. By God’s grace, the hotel personnel gave me the recommendation to take her to VCA Regional Institute. The staff were helpful and during this difficult time I knew she was in good hands. Thank you to the great personnel who accommodated my needs.
August 12 · Mary Jo MarcouillerThis will be long-winded, but I am writing a positive review to combat all the negative ones, but this review is based on my personal experiences here over 10 years.I have been coming here over the course of several years for emergency reasons and my most recent visit wasn't even a month ago. I have NEVER been met with unfriendliness or unkindness or any attitude. I have walked in there distraught a multitude of times while fighting tears (and losing the battle), but I was still greeted kindly and professionally.Of the multiple visits, the doctors and the techs have been extremely helpful in explaining the medical jargon when I did not understand the terminology or the meaning. They gave me hope where there was hope warranted, and told me the facts as they were when there were hard decisions to be made. I could not have appreciated that more. And the kindness I was met with when I had to make those hard decisions... It was bountiful. I could not ask for a better emergency vet.And yes, it's expensive, but like any regular human hospital, they charge you out the wazoo for everything as to be expected. The only difference is the fact that human insurance doesn't cover your pet emergencies. You're coming to an emergency vet and not your regular vet, so you cannot expect the same pricing. It's like going to your regular GP doctor vs the ER... who's going to make you pay more? Exactly... Despite the expense, I have had everything explained to me on my bill before I even ran my card to pay for it. This is just one of the aspects of pet ownership.I can only give VCA RIVER glowing reviews because I believe they deserve it. It's not an easy field to be in and I commend them for taking the lives of our beloved pets into their hands and doing the best that they can with the tools and the information that they have.
